Book excerpt: An electrifying new voice in military fiction, Joe Buff has written a riveting and totally realistic tale of military adventure-a spectacular novel that is sure to establish this outstanding author as the new master of the genre. Vividly authentic and impeccably researched, it takes readers into the not-too-distant future, when the United States is embroiled in a tactical nuclear war that will mark a new era of weapons and tactics, geopolitical alignments, and human courage.... Deep Sound Channel The year is 2011, and in South Africa a reactionary coup has established a military government that has begun sinking U.S. and British merchant ships. NATO quickly responds, with only Germany holding back-until Germany starts nuking Poland and eviscerating the French. Now the South Atlantic is a battleground where nuclear-tipped missiles rule-and the only gun worth using is one that seeks and fires from deep beneath the sea. In response, Lieutenant Commander Jeffrey Fuller and the crew of the nuclear submarine USS Challenger are called in to help. Ceramic-hulled and designed for maximum stealth, the Challenger is being sent to South Africa for a mission critical to stopping the war. Together with a team of Navy SEALs and assisted by Boer freedom fighter Ilse Reebeck, Commander Fuller must infiltrate the enemy coast and attack a compound where scientists are putting together the ultimate biological weapon-a violent, deadly microbe that has the potential to wreak global devastation. For Jeffrey Fuller, the operation will take him back to his former life as a SEAL. It's his job to steer the team of operatives to shore; penetrate concentric arcs of armaments, minefields, and sensors; and destroy the death lab. If the mission works, the bioweapon will be destroyed and shock waves will cripple the South African government. If it goes wrong, fallout will kill thousands of innocent people. Deep Sound Channel provides a rare and telling look into the future of our military's weapons-and into the horrific violence of tactical nuclear war. It is a cutting-edge masterpiece that takes readers on a wild and unforgettable ride of suspense, nuclear warfare, and underwater adventure

Book Environment Variability in the Deep Sound Channel

Download or read book Environment Variability in the Deep Sound Channel written by Eric J. Softley and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep ocean moored thermistor string buoys were constructed to obtain vertical temperature profiles at depths down to 1500 meters. A requirement for data acquisition in near real time was met by means of on-board signal conditioning and prompt radio transmission to a computer equipped shore station for automatic processing and subsequent use in relating acoustic propagation to temporal variations along designated acoustic paths. Two such buoy systems were launched. One was successfully implanted in about 4800 meters of water providing some 1000 hours of real time on-station temperature, environmental and housekeeping data while the second was lost during the final stage of deployment. A complete description of the equipment along with design considerations and techniques utilized is appended. (Author).

Book The Upper and Deep Sound Channel in the Northeast Atlantic

Download or read book The Upper and Deep Sound Channel in the Northeast Atlantic written by Don F. Fenner and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of extensive historical sound velocity profile data east of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between 20 degrees N latitude and Iceland indicates that warm, saline Mediterranean Intermediate Water and the effects of annual heating and cooling are responsible for marked departures from the basic trilinear vertical sound velocity structure found in most open ocean areas. South of about 43 degrees N latitude, Mediterranean Intermediate Water between 1000 and 1300 meters causes the formation of a subsurface sound velocity maximum, thereby creating an upper sound channel and a depressed deep sound channel. North of about 50 degrees N latitude, winter cooling causes the formation of a subsurface sound velocity maximum and summer warming results in the formation of a somewhat shoaler upper sound channel. Temperature-salinity and sound velocity comparisons for 12 selected locations throughout the Northeast Atlantic Ocean are presented in the appendix. (Author).

Download or read book Sea Surface Sound written by B.R. Kerman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1988-07-31 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its relentless pursuit of further knowledge, science tends to compartmentalize. Over the years the pursuit of What might be called geophysical acoustics of the sea-surface has languished. This has occured even through there are well-developed and active research programs in underwater acoustics, ocean hydrodynamics, cloud and precipitation physics, and ice mechanics - to name a few - as well as a history of engineering expertise built on these scientific fields. It remained to create a convergence, a dialogue across disciplines, of mutual benefit. The central theme of the Lerici workshop, perhaps overly simplified, was 'What are the mechanisms causing ambient noise at the upper surface of the ocean?' What could hydrodynamicists contribute to a better understanding of breaking wave dynamics, bubble production, ocean wave dynamics, or near-surface turbulence for the benefit of the underwater acoustics community? What further insights could fluid dynamicists gain by including acoustic measurements in their repertoire of instrumentation? While every attendee will have his or her percep tions of details, it was universally agreed that a valuable step had been taken to bring together two mature disciplines and that significant co-operative studies would undoubtedly follow. The scope of the workshop was enlarged beyond its original intent to also include the question of ice-noise generation. The success of this decision can be seen in high quality of the presentations. the contribution of its disciples in the other workshop discussions and the heightened awareness and interest of we other novices.
