Book Back up Recovery Systems of Deep sea Moorings

Download or read book Back up Recovery Systems of Deep sea Moorings written by Henri Odilon Berteaux and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Failures of deep-sea moorings set without back-up systems usually result in the loss of valuable equipment and it is seldom possible to ascertain the modes and the causes of the failures. With a recognition of the need for development of auxiliary systems which would permit the recovery of that part of the failed mooring left on station, a number of designs were built and tested at sea in 1966, 1967 and 1968. These designs can be grouped into three basic types: inert ground line; active ground line; and in-line floatation. The report describes these back-up systems and reviews their in-situ performance. All systems were used at Site D (39 degrees N, 70 degrees W) in a depth of approximately 2700 m. (Author).

Book Performance Analysis of Woods Hole Taut Moorings

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has been using deep-sea moored buoys for acquiring serial observations of ocean currents, temperature and other data for over twelve years. A brief description of the deep-sea mooring program is given. The mooring statistics and performance are described. Mooring failures of 1970 and 1971 have been categorized and statistics on the modes and causes of failures are presented. The reliabilities of different types of moorings are computed and compared. The role of radio telemetry for the real-time measurement of mooring line tension and its use in checking the mooring status are discussed. Examples of potential design data like tension and currents recorded by moorings that failed are provided. Finally, recommendations for research and development needed to improve mooring reliability are given. (Author).

Book Evaluation of Long Term Deep Sea Effects on Mooring Line Components

Download or read book Evaluation of Long Term Deep Sea Effects on Mooring Line Components written by Ronald L. Morey and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interpretation of environmental deterioration that occurs in oceanographic buoy systems is discussed. These single point taut-moored systems are used for the placement of instruments for long term measurements of oceanographic and meteorological data. A number of moorings have been lost necessitating an analysis of all components in the mooring line. Systematic examination of retrieved components has indicated the presence of corrosion at all stages in the mooring from the surface buoy to the anchor. This includes the various instrument housings and attachments, the mooring line and its terminations, and the interconnecting hardware such as shackles, links and chain. Pitting type corrosion, crevice corrosion, galvanic incompatibility, have been identified and design changes made. (Author Modified Abstract).
