But Sheridan’s world-wandering ways may soon come to a very abrupt—and violent—end . . . on the long-forgotten Indonesian island of Kamling. Falling into the hands of a bloodthirsty tribe led by the notorious slave trader known as Portuguese Joe, Sheridan discovers that there’s not enough room on the island for the two of them. And Portuguese Joe has the perfect solution: dispatch Sheridan to another world . . . with the help of a firing squad. But Sheridan has other plans. The island is home to a hidden fortune in gold—and a gold miner’s beautiful daughter—and he means to get his hands on both of them. If he can avoid the exotic dangers lurking at every turn . . . By the age of eighteen Hubbard had already traveled via steamboat to the Far East and served as a helmsman on a twin-masted schooner off the coast of China. On those voyages he had the opportunity to explore and investigate life on the islands of the South Pacific. His insights into the people and culture gained on those journeys inform stories like Destiny’s Drum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean Sea is now the deadliest region in the world for migrants. Although the death toll has been rising for many years, the EU response remains fragmented and short sighted. Politicians frame these migration flows as an unprecedented crisis and emphasize migration control at the EU's external boundaries. In this context, At Europe's Edge investigates why the EU prioritizes the fortification of its external borders; why migrants nevertheless continue to cross the Mediterranean and to die at sea; and how EU member states on the southern periphery respond to their new role as migration gatekeepers. The book addresses these questions by examining the relationship between the EU and Malta, a small state with an outsized role in migration politics as EU policies place it at the crosshairs of migration flows and controls. The chapters combine ethnographic methods with macro-level analyses to weave together policymaker, practitioner, and migrant experiences, and demonstrate how the Mediterranean is an important space for the contested construction of 'Europe'. This book provides rich insight into the unexpected level of influence Malta exerts on EU migration governance, as well as the critical role migrants and their clandestine journeys play in animating EU and Maltese migration policies, driving international relations, and producing Malta's political power. By centring on the margins, the book pushes the boundaries of our knowledge of the global politics of migration, asylum, and border security.

Book Coastal and Deep Ocean Pollution

Download or read book Coastal and Deep Ocean Pollution written by Andres Hugo Arias and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the recent decades, social, political and academic endeavours have been made to improve environmental quality and reduce pollution. In particular, the ocean, sea and coastal areas show varying degrees of impact from the multiple human activities carried out in the terrestrial as well as in the aquatic environment. Ecology is a science which studies the relationship between organisms and the surrounding environment and in the modern era, the marine world is getting increasing attention. For centuries it has been the final reservoir of human garbage; later it became an oil farm with a concomitant increase of coastal population growth and unplanned growth of the fishing industry and the increasing use of sea routes for cargo transport and recreational uses (cruises). All this led to rising contamination with negative effects on biota and even human health. It is then imperative to know the current situation of the world's oceans: that is the main purpose of this book, to document at a glance the latest research in the field of ocean pollution.
