Book Deep Inelastic Scattering

Download or read book Deep Inelastic Scattering written by Robin Devenish and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date, self-contained account of deep inelastic scattering in high-energy physics, intended for graduate students and physicists new to the subject. It covers the classic results which led to the quark-parton model of hadrons and the establishment of quantum chromodynamics as the theory of the strong nuclear force, in addition to new vistas in the subject opened up by the electron-proton collider HERA. The extraction of parton momentum distribution functions, a key input for physics at hadron colliders such as the Tevatron at Fermi Lab and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, is described in detail. The challenges of the HERA data at 'low x' are described and possible explanations in terms of gluon dynamics and other models outlined. Other chapters cover: jet production at large momentum transfer and the determination of the strong coupling constant, electroweak interactions at very high momentum transfers, the extension of deep inelastic techniques to include hadronic probes, a summary of fully polarised inelastic scattering and the spin structure of the nucleon, and finally a brief account of methods in searching for signals 'beyond the standard model'.

Download or read book The Structure of the Proton written by R. G. Roberts and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-11-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate/research level book describes our present knowledge of protons and neutrons, the particles which make up the nucleus of the atom. Experiments using high energy electrons, muons and neutrinos reveal the proton as being made up of point-like constituents, quarks. The strong forces which bind the quarks together are described in terms of the modern theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the â€~glue' binding the quarks being mediated by new constituents called gluons. Larger and new particle accelerators probe the interactions between quarks and gluons at shorter distances. The understanding of this detailed substructure and of the fundamental forces responsible is one of the keys to unravelling the physics of the structure of matter. This book will be of interest to all theoretical and experimental particle physicists.

Book Experimental Results on Polarized Structure Functions in Deep Inelastic Lepton nucleon Scattering

Download or read book Experimental Results on Polarized Structure Functions in Deep Inelastic Lepton nucleon Scattering written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A summary is given of experimental results on spin structure functions of the proton g1{sup p}(x, Q2), deuteron g1{sup d}(x, Q2), and neutron g1(superscript n)(x, Q2) as measured in deep inelastic scattering of polarized leptons from a polarized target. All results are consistent with the Bjorken sum rule predictions at the Q2 of each experiment. The data do not support the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule prediction for the proton which implies that the hencity carried by the strange quark may be nonzero and that the net quark helicity is smaller than expected from simple quark models.

Book Deep inelastic Lepton Scattering by Nuclei The Pion exchange Model

Download or read book Deep inelastic Lepton Scattering by Nuclei The Pion exchange Model written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quark constituents of nucleons were discovered in deep-inelastic electron scattering. It is not surprising therefore that the nuclear effects in deep-inelastic lepton scattering first observed by the European Muon Collaboration (EMC) have spawned many suggestions of revolutionary changes in our views of nuclear structure. Perhaps quarks play a far more active role in nuclear dynamics than the conventional theory provides. Before following the natural appeal of radical conclusions we believe it is important to examine in quantitative detail the consequences of the conventional nuclear model, in which the nucleon-nucleon potential features a one-pion exchange tail at large distances, an intermediate range attraction dominated by two-pion exchange and a strong short-range phenomenological repulsion. For this purpose let us assume that quarks are strictly confined to single hadrons, and that the quark structure of the hadrons in a nucleus is not affected by their environment. These assumptions allow a consistent description of deep-inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering, and the quantitative consequences agree well with available data. 15 refs.

Book Quark Distributions in Nuclei

Download or read book Quark Distributions in Nuclei written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep inelastic lepton scattering from nuclei indicates that quark-parton distributions are significantly different from the distributions in isolated nucleons. The EMC and SLAC data on iron and deuterium targets show enhanced and suppresed scattering for kinematic regions where Bjorken x 1. In addition, the SLAC data on 3He show strong enhancement over results with conventional nuclear theory for x 1. These data and recent model interpretations are summarized. Detailed comparisons with the data are presented for the quark cluster model. 53 references.

Download or read book Quarks and Leptons written by Maurice Lévy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1979 Cargese Summer Institute on Quarks and Leptons was organized by the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris (M. LEVY and J.-L. BASDEVANT), CERN (M. JACOB), the Universite Catholi~ue de Louvain (D. SPEISER and J. WEYERS), and the Katholieke Universiteit te Leuven (R. GASTMANS), who, like in 1975 and 1977, had joined their efforts and worked in common. It was the 20th Summer Institute held at Cargese and the 5th one organized by the two institutes of theoretical physics at Leuven and Louvain-la Neuve. This time, the school was dominated by the impressive advances which were made in the field of perturbative ~uantum chromodyna mics and its applications to high energy phenomena involving strongly interacting particles. The unification of weak and electromagnetic interactions being well established, a new picture in particle physics emerges wherein a possible unification of weak, electromagnetic, and strong forces is put forward. Its conse~uences were also discussed in detail. Finally, to complete the picture of the present status of high energy physics, experi mentalists from the major laboratories around the world reported on the latest developments in electron-positron scattering, neutrino induced reactions, and hadron collisions. We owe many thanks to all those who have made this Summer Institute possible! Thanks are due to the Scientific Committee of NATO and its President for a generous grant and especially to the head of the Scientific Affairs Division, Dr. M. DI LULLO for his constant help and encouragements.

Book The Structure of the Nucleon

Download or read book The Structure of the Nucleon written by Anthony W. Thomas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-11-17 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the only stable baryon, the nucleon is of crucial importance in particle physics. Since the nucleon is a building block for all atomic nuclei, there is a need to analyse the its structure in order to fully understand the essential properties of all atomic nuclei. After more than forty years of research on the nucleon, both the experimental and theoretical situations have matured to a point where a synthesis of the results becomes indispensable. Here, A.W. Thomas and W. Weise present a unique report on the extensive empirical studies, theoretical foundations and the different models of the nucleon. The appendices provide an extensive summary of formulae needed in practical calculations. From the contents: electromagnetic structure of the nucleon, weak probes of nucleon structure, deep inelastic lepton scattering on the nucleon; elements of QCD, aspects of non-perturbative QCD, Chiral Symmetry and nucleon structure, models of the nucleon

Book Lepton Scattering and Quark Hadron Duality Studies at Jefferson Lab

Download or read book Lepton Scattering and Quark Hadron Duality Studies at Jefferson Lab written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At high enough energies asymptotic freedom guarantees the deep inelastic scattering cross sections to be calculated as nearly free electron-quark scattering. However, confinement guarantees that the experimentally observed final states particles are hadrons. Low-energy quark hadron duality suggests that the hadronic cross sections, when averaged over an appropriate energy range, nevertheless coincide with the naive leading-twist quark-gluon calculations. Deep inelastic inclusive scattering shows that scaling at modest Q2 and v already arises from very few resonance channels. This is reflected by the striking agreement (10%) between data in the nucleon resonance region and the deep inelastic (W24GeV2) region for the Q2>0.5 (GeV/c)2, known as the Bloom-Gilman duality. Electron-hadron scattering allows for further investigation of quark-hadron duality by virtue of its ability to select resonances, by tagging with either spin or flavor.
