Book excerpt: What does an almost middle-aged guy like me have in common with a young woman who was never allowed to grow up? Not much… Other than death. Greer accepts responsibility for taking life for granted. But the weight of others’ expectations leaves her existing in the past. She stands on one side of a deep chasm, tied down by regrets that highlight a bleak future. When Greer needs a lift, I recognize our histories are strikingly similar, and I’m struggling as much with being left behind by the people I held dear. But can two lonely hearts bridge the gap together and find a promise for tomorrow?

Book The North Carolina Gazetteer 2nd Ed

Download or read book The North Carolina Gazetteer 2nd Ed written by William S. Powell and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Carolina Gazetteer first appeared to wide acclaim in 1968 and has remained an essential reference for anyone with a serious interest in the Tar Heel State, from historians to journalists, from creative writers to urban planners, from backpackers to armchair travelers. This revised and expanded edition adds approximately 1,200 new entries, bringing to nearly 21,000 the number of North Carolina cities, towns, crossroads, waterways, mountains, and other places identified here. The stories attached to place names are at the core of the book and the reason why it has stood the test of time. Some recall faraway places: Bombay, Shanghai, Moscow, Berlin. Others paint the locality as a little piece of heaven on earth: Bliss, Splendor, Sweet Home. In many cases the name derivations are unusual, sometimes wildly so: Cat Square, Huggins Hell, Tater Hill, Whynot. Telling us much about our own history in these snapshot histories of particular locales, The North Carolina Gazetteer provides an engaging, authoritative, and fully updated reference to place names from all corners of the Tar Heel State.

They now lived in a little valley called Deep Gap. Chad had to keep the reason of their move a secret from everyone. He soon discovered he was not the only one hiding secrets. This included a young mountain girl that quickly won his heart. Why did the Ghost of Deep Gap walk the mountains in the dark of night? Why did the people of Deep Gap whisper of a crazy woman that placed her dead baby in a moonshine jar? Was the baby the Ghost of Deep Gap that roamed the hills looking for a final resting place? Would Chad be able to keep his family secret and still win the heart of the young mountain girl or would her secret tear them apart? Chad was determined to unravel the truth of the mountains before it destroyed the place he had finally learned to call home. He soon discovered that a secret could turn into a lie and change many lives that are involved.

Book The Last Train from Elkland

Download or read book The Last Train from Elkland written by Doug McGuinn and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not only is THE LAST TRAIN FROM ELKLAND a brief history of four northwestern North Carolina mountain communities, it is also about two railroads that operated in and around these communities: the Virginia¿Carolina, also known as the ¿Virginia Creeper¿ (in 1916, the Virginia¿Carolina Railway was bought by the Norfolk & Western Railway, and renamed the Abingdon Branch), and the Deep Gap Tie and Lumber Company¿s railroad, whose former Hassinger Lumber Company¿s Shay logging locomotive operated alongside Gap Creek, from Deep Gap, in Watauga County, North Carolina, to the South Fork of the New River, near Fleetwood, in Ashe County, North Carolina, a distance of only about five miles. Although these communities were located in North Carolina, they all had a common tie-in with the neighboring state of Virginia ¿ the trains of the two railroads hauled logs that had been felled in the area surrounding the four communities, timber destined to be cut at the Hassinger Lumber Company¿s sawmill in Konnarock, Virginia. By the time the blades went silent on Christmas Eve, 1928, almost 400 million board feet of the area¿s best hardwood had passed through the Hassinger Lumber Company¿s sawmill. How much did this unchecked logging contribute to the immense damage done to the area by the disastrous floods of 1916 and 1940? This question is also explored in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This five-volume handbook focuses on processing techniques, characterization methods, and physical properties of thin films (thin layers of insulating, conducting, or semiconductor material). The editor has composed five separate, thematic volumes on thin films of metals, semimetals, glasses, ceramics, alloys, organics, diamonds, graphites, porous materials, noncrystalline solids, supramolecules, polymers, copolymers, biopolymers, composites, blends, activated carbons, intermetallics, chalcogenides, dyes, pigments, nanostructured materials, biomaterials, inorganic/polymer composites, organoceramics, metallocenes, disordered systems, liquid crystals, quasicrystals, and layered structures. Thin films is a field of the utmost importance in today's materials science, electrical engineering and applied solid state physics; with both research and industrial applications in microelectronics, computer manufacturing, and physical devices. Advanced, high-performance computers, high-definition TV, digital camcorders, sensitive broadband imaging systems, flat-panel displays, robotic systems, and medical electronics and diagnostics are but a few examples of miniaturized device technologies that depend the utilization of thin film materials. The Handbook of Thin Films Materials is a comprehensive reference focusing on processing techniques, characterization methods, and physical properties of these thin film materials.

Book Deep Ocean Circulation

    Book Details:
  • Author : T. Teramoto
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 1993-05-10
  • ISBN : 9780080870977
  • Pages : 379 pages

Download or read book Deep Ocean Circulation written by T. Teramoto and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1993-05-10 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises the final report of the research project entitled the Dynamics of the Deep Ocean Circulation. The layered structure of the subsurface circulation, which had been predicted in the hypothetical model proposed prior to the research, is verified through Eulerian and Lagrangian measurements of current. By the use of the numerical model, the deep circulation of the Philippine Sea, which has been long supposed to be isolated from the North Pacific, is revealed to be derived in close association with that of the latter ocean. Behavior of the deep current around the equator is also clarified by numerical modeling. By the extensive use of sediment trapping technology, it becomes clear that sinking sediments play an important role in the distribution of chemical substances in the deep ocean. Graduate students in the field of oceanography will find this a good textbook.
