Book Foundations of Statistical Mechanics

Download or read book Foundations of Statistical Mechanics written by O. Penrose and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-09-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Series of Monographs in Natural Philosophy, Volume 22: Foundations of Statistical Mechanics: A Deductive Treatment presents the main approaches to the basic problems of statistical mechanics. This book examines the theory that provides explicit recognition to the limitations on one's powers of observation. Organized into six chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the main physical assumptions and their idealization in the form of postulates. This text then examines the consequences of these postulates that culminate in a derivation of the fundamental formula for calculating probabilities in terms of dynamic quantities. Other chapters provide a careful analysis of the significant notion of entropy, which shows the links between thermodynamics and statistical mechanics and also between communication theory and statistical mechanics. The final chapter deals with the thermodynamic concept of entropy. This book is intended to be suitable for students of theoretical physics. Probability theorists, statisticians, and philosophers will also find this book useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is shown that electromagnetic forces like gravitation can be related to variations in the metric tensor provided, time like space is three dimensional. Time coordinates are given by imaginary numbers. The 4-axes in Minkowski space represents one direction in an orthogonal coordinate system (4, 5, 6). Electrons and positrons are assumed to be tiny black holes. At the surface of a black hole the unit length of the 4-axes equals zero, and time flow is assumed to take place as rotations in the 4, 5-plane generating charge. Based on this view of electric charge classical electrodynamics is evolved, and a model of the electron is constructed. From that model Plank’s constant is estimated as a function of the speed of light, the elementary charge and Coulomb’s constant. The model unavoidably leads to quantum mechanics. It is assumed that time can flow in the 5, 6-plane between two tiny black holes, one acting as source and one as sink. From hybrids between such elements and electrons/ positrons the basic two quarks, and hence protons and neutrons, can be built up. Pairs of such source/sink elements are identified as neutrinos.

Book The Science of Christian Economy

Download or read book The Science of Christian Economy written by Lyndon LaRouche and published by Executive Intelligence Review. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This poor but precious civilization of ours could yet be rescued from what may appear to many, more and more often, the accelerating onrush of apocalyptic doom. This civilization could be saved--if we earn that. If we are not all to drown, your neighbor too, must learn now to swim. What therefore did you urgently need to know, which I had either neglected to tell you, or, perhaps, had not said clearly enough? What did you require most urgently, that you might rescue us from your neighbor’s folly? A grander strategic perspective, a more alluring set of programs of economic reconstruction? I thought that was not where my omission lay. What your neighbor required, most urgently, was not instruction on what to think, but remedial assistance in the matter of how to think. One must never make apology for saying even unpleasant things which are needed, most urgently, to be said. One need not apologize for saying that as well as possible--if no one else were saying it better. I wish devoutly it were better; but nonetheless, it had been better said than not. Now, my friends have elected, very kindly, to reissue these three published philosophical writings together, in a single volume. May it enrich you and so give you pleasure. I can do no better but share with you something slightly better than that which I have to give. --Lyndon Larouche

Download or read book Philosophy of Physics written by M. Bunge and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1972-12-31 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with some of the current issues in the philosophy, methodology and foundations of physics. Some such problems are: - Do mathematical formalisms interpret themselves or is it necessary to adjoin them interpretation assumptions, and if so how are these as sumptions to be framed? - What are physical theories about: physical systems or laboratory operations or both or neither? - How are the basic concepts of a theory to be introduced: by ref erence to measurements or by explicit definition or axiomatically? - What is the use ofaxiomatics in physics? - How are the various physical theories inter-related: like Chinese boxes or in more complex ways? - What is the role of analogy in the construction and in the inter pretation of physical theories? In particular, are classical analogues like those of particle and wave indispensable in quantum theories? - What is the role of the apparatus in quantum phenomena and what is the place of measurement theory in quantum mechanics? - How does a theory face experiment: single-handed or with the help of further theories? These and several other questions of the kind are met with by the research physicist, the physics teacher and the physics student in their everyday work. If dodged they will recur. And a wrong answer to them may obscure the understanding of what has been achieved and may even hamper further advancement. Philosophy, methodology and foundations, like rose bushes, are enjoyable when cultivated but become ugly and thorny when neglected.

Book The Routledge Companion to Philosophy of Physics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Philosophy of Physics is a comprehensive and authoritative guide to the state of the art in the philosophy of physics. It comprisess 54 self-contained chapters written by leading philosophers of physics at both senior and junior levels, making it the most thorough and detailed volume of its type on the market – nearly every major perspective in the field is represented. The Companion’s 54 chapters are organized into 12 parts. The first seven parts cover all of the major physical theories investigated by philosophers of physics today, and the last five explore key themes that unite the study of these theories. I. Newtonian Mechanics II. Special Relativity III. General Relativity IV. Non-Relativistic Quantum Theory V. Quantum Field Theory VI. Quantum Gravity VII. Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics VIII. Explanation IX. Intertheoretic Relations X. Symmetries XI. Metaphysics XII. Cosmology The difficulty level of the chapters has been carefully pitched so as to offer both accessible summaries for those new to philosophy of physics and standard reference points for active researchers on the front lines. An introductory chapter by the editors maps out the field, and each part also begins with a short summary that places the individual chapters in context. The volume will be indispensable to any serious student or scholar of philosophy of physics.

  • Author : M. Bunge
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9401025169

Download or read book Exact Philosophy written by M. Bunge and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers that follow were read and discussed at the first Symposium on Exact Philosophy. This conference was held at Montreal on November 4th and 5th, 1971, to celebrate the sesquicentennial of McGill University and establish the Society for Exact Philosophy. The expression 'exact philosophy' is taken to signify mathematical phi losophy, i.e., philosophy done with the explicit help of mathematical logic and mathematics. So far the expression denotes an attitude rather than a fully blown discipline: it intends to convey the intention to try and pro ceed in as exact a manner as we can in formulating and discussing phi losophical problems and theories. The kind of philosophy we wish to practice and promote is disciplined rather than wild, systematic rather than disconnected, and capable of being argued over rather than oracular. We believe that even metaphysics, notoriously riotous, can be subjected to the control of logic and mathematics. Even the history of philosophy, notoriously unsystematic, can benefit from an exact reconstruction of some classical ideas.
