Book excerpt: A book written simply because a friend, Joe Piskel, took the time off work one afternoon to come to my house saying, "Harvey, I know some of your stories, there are so many of them. It's been 17 years since you have been retired, if you don't start writing them they are going to be lost forever to your family and Grand Rapids." So, I got my yellow pad out and started to write a few stories. It is not something I could ever have envisioned. As I wrote on the pad, they were a mess! Then reading them to my wife, as she typed them on the computer, she would hand me a copy. As I read them they would come alive. These stories would cover all facets of police work from a call that a child had fallen into a creek on Hwy. 38 to a shooting taking place at the high school as well as the senseless murder of a fellow law enforcement officer. Doris, my wife of 60 years, kept encouraging me, lending moral support. Sometimes helping me remember as she had lived through these stories with me. Soon, I had written well over 150 short stories covering my personal life, childhood, Army service in Korea and 40 years on the Grand Rapids Police Department. During these years, I wore many hats: Patrolman, investigator, sergeant, assistant chief and eight years as chief. Never looking for the power of the position but the challenges to be met. I worked with men and women, I could never have asked for better coworkers than the ones I had. These stories have now become a book for my family and friends. Along the way to challenge myself, I have also written a book of fictional short stories always striving to bring a different slant to a story, "A Justifiable Ending?"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deeply-reported, riveting account of a cold case murder in Los Angeles, unsolved until DNA evidence implicated a shocking suspect – a female detective within the LAPD’s own ranks. On February 24, 1986, 29-year-old newlywed Sherri Rasmussen was murdered in the home she shared with her husband, John. The crime scene suggested a ferocious struggle, and police initially assumed it was a burglary gone awry. Before her death, Sherri had confided to her parents that an ex-girlfriend of John’s, a Los Angeles police officer, had threatened her. The Rasmussens urged the LAPD to investigate the ex-girlfriend, but the original detectives only pursued burglary suspects, and the case went cold. DNA analysis did not exist when Sherri was murdered. Decades later, a swab from a bite mark on Sherri’s arm revealed her killer was in fact female, not male. A DNA match led to the arrest and conviction of veteran LAPD Detective Stephanie Lazarus, John’s onetime girlfriend. The Lazarus Files delivers the visceral experience of being inside a real-life murder mystery. McGough reconstructs the lives of Sherri, John and Stephanie; the love triangle that led to Sherri’s murder; and the homicide investigation that followed. Was Stephanie protected by her fellow officers? What did the LAPD know, and when did they know it? Are there other LAPD cold cases with a police connection that remain unsolved?

Book excerpt: This book is a sequel to the authors first book about the F-4 and its pilots during the Vietnam War. It adds ten additional stories. These stories show the commitment to duty of the brave men who flew the F-4 and the pain that duty cost them. As the ground war struggled for success in Vietnam, it became intensely clear that the skies had to be owned by the Allies for victory to have a chance. It was the F-4 and its pilots that made that possible. The author, a Phantom pilot himself, details intense stories of undaunted and valiant American pilots with their legendary fierce Phantom. These are personal stories of intrepid courage and self-sacrifice to get the mission donewhatever the cost. Fierce and unflinching battles to save friendlies and destroy a ruthless enemy are all recorded over forty years later. These are true tales of war at five hundred knots.

Book excerpt: Combining media effects with aesthetic approaches this book offers the first substantial, systematic and coherent account of fun and its importance. But what exactly is fun and what purposes does it serve? Fun is a vital element of entertainment, and entertainment is the most important form of culture in modern Western democracies. It demonstrates that fun is at the heart of entertainment's effects – entertainment both offers its consumers fun and provides them with the intellectual materials to think about the nature of fun. More than this, the book argues that entertainment shows us that fun – pleasure without purpose – is at the heart of living a good life. Illustrated with detailed examples from entertainment – from the Urban Dictionary to The Simpsons, to the Culture novels of Iain M Banks – this book is intelligent, original, and even (dare we say it) fun.
