Book The Campus as a Work of Art

Download or read book The Campus as a Work of Art written by Thomas A. Gaines and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1991-09-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, for the first time, presents the total physical world of the college campus as a bona fide art form. It analyzes the aesthetic elements involved in the spawning and savaging of college grounds. The ideal campus design, once defined, is held up to over 100 campuses throughout the United States, and the relative artistic merit of each evaluated. Both the best and the worst in campus design are critically observed from the standpoint of urban space, architectural quality, landscape, and overall appeal. Variables such as regional differences, historical perspective, expansion, and visual focus also figure in the evaluation. A list of the fifty most artistically successful campuses in the country concludes this highly readable and yet academically valid work exploring a discrete artistic discipline.

Book Grave Misfortune The USS Indianapolis Tragedy

Download or read book Grave Misfortune The USS Indianapolis Tragedy written by Richard A. Hulver and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dedicated to the Sailors and Marines who lost their lives on the final voyage of USS Indianapolis and to those who survived the torment at sea following its sinking. plus the crews that risked their lives in rescue ships. The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was a decorated World War II warship that is primarily remembered for her worst 15 minutes. . This ship earned ten (10) battle stars for her service in World War II and was credited for shooting down nine (9) enemy planes. However, this fame was overshadowed by the first 15 minutes July 30, 1945, when she was struck by two (2) torpedoes from Japanese submarine I-58 and sent to the bottom of the Philippine Sea. The sinking of Indianapolis and the loss of 880 crew out of 1,196 --most deaths occurring in the 4-5 day wait for a rescue delayed --is a tragedy in U.S. naval history. This historical reference showcases primary source documents to tell the story of Indianapolis, the history of this tragedy from the U.S. Navy perspective. It recounts the sinking, rescue efforts, follow-up investigations, aftermath and continuing communications efforts. Included are deck logs to better understand the ship location when she sunk and testimony of survivors and participants. For additional historical publications produced by the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command, please check out these resources here: https://bookstore.gpo.gov/agency/naval-history-heritage-command Year 2016 marked the 71st anniversary of the sinking and another spike in public attention on the loss -- including a big screen adaptation of the story, talk of future films, documentaries, and planned expeditions to locate the wreckage of the warship.

Book The Sonny Cher Guide

Download or read book The Sonny Cher Guide written by Daniel Wheway and published by Daniel Wheway. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Together as the most-successful husband-and-wife duo ever, Sonny & Cher sold over 10 million singles worldwide and topped the charts in Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States with original hits Baby Don't Go, Sing C'est La Vie, Little Man and, of course, 1960's anthem I Got You Babe. Their 3-million selling debut album Look At Us spent 8 consecutive weeks at #2 on the Billboard 200 and was one of 14 hit albums by the duo - the epitome of "super-couple". Later honoured with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for their television work, the often-controversial tabloid-favourites - whom had undisputed significance in Phil Spector's success and the folk-rock era - also put their stamp on variety show history with their much-loved 1970's The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, which received 19 Emmy Award nominations. Due to the late-Sonny's conspicuously-crafted hits still being re-issued and played or imitated on TV shows such as The Simpsons, Mad Men, The Big Bang Theory and American dad!, and Cher's outstandingly-successful career still going strong in 2016 - plus son Chaz Bono's colossal amount of column inches - the beat goes on for this legendary duo....

Book excerpt: "Amy Irvine implores us to trade in our solitude for solidarity, to recognize ourselves in each other and in the places we love, so that we might come together to save them." —PAM HOUSTON As Edward Abbey’s Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness turns fifty, its iconic author, who has inspired generations of rebel-rousing advocacy on behalf of the American West, is due for a tribute as well as a talking to. In Desert Cabal: A New Season in the Wilderness, Amy Irvine admires the man who influenced her life and work while challenging all that is dated—offensive, even—between the covers of Abbey’s environmental classic. From Abbey’s quiet notion of solitude to Irvine’s roaring cabal, the desert just got hotter, and its defenders more nuanced and numerous.
