Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dedication Memorial of the New Masonic Temple, Boston In presenting this volume to the Masonic Fraternity of Massachusetts, we do not claim for it any originality. The different subjects have all, in some form, been placed before the Order at various times. Every Mason will concede that the incidents connected with the Dedication of the New Masonic Temple, June 24, A. L. 5867, were worthy to be placed on record, to commemorate an event of unsurpassed magnitude. This we have endeavored to accomplish by presenting, in a connected form, everything of interest relating to the New Temple, from the laying of the corner-stone to the closing ceremonies of dedication. We have been greatly assisted in obtaining information regarding many events that transpired on the 24th through the kindness of the proprietors of "The Boston Journal," who have placed at our disposal the mass of items collected by them on that day. In connection with the above, we have given a passing glance at the different places where the Masonic institutions of Boston, and the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, have convened since the year 1733. Grand Lodge, of Connecticut, November 20, 1888 The house of Capt. George Nichols, mentioned above, is still standing, substantially as it was in 1765, and is now owned by the heirs of our late brother, Dr. James Brown, 123 East Main street. Capt. Georgenichols was one of the magnates of the village, an owner of slaves and the only man in the town, whose name appears in the assessors' list, as possessing a carriage. His house was the most pretentious in the vicinity, and is to-day a good specimen Of the better class of dwellings of that time. The lodge meetings were held in'the ball room, which occupied the upper story of the house. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dedication of Minsters' Monument, Aug. 28, 1899 Two hundred and sixty-four years ago, in the depths of a New England winter, Roger Williams was driven from his home and family in the colony of Massachusetts Bay, because he had preached the doctrine that the state had no right to control religious tenets. While he was seeking the confidence and friendship of the wild men of the forest, the good people who had forced him to flee, no doubt, thanked God they were rid of his heresies, and prayed that no more such trouble might fall to their lot. About two years later, however, others were preaching the theories taught by Williams, and to rid themselves completely of such odious doctrine. Nineteen other persons were driven from their borders. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dedication of the Memorial Monument to Henry Huttleston Rogers And what was the man as a man? Dr. Collier, a friend of years, and his family pastor, who had con soled him in the hour of affliction, who had married his children, who had administered to him as a close friend for many years, this keen Scotchman said: He was a man of clean heart, pure man hood, pure in speech. A writer in the New York Times said Courtesy of a very special kind, running even to over consideration for others, was his most marked characteristic. This showed itself sometimes in apparently trivial matters. Because some people were awakened or disturbed by the whistle of his yacht, which came into the harbor early Friday or Saturday mornings, Mr. Rogers gave orders that the whistle should not blow. And it was sup pressed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
