Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the grand tradition of popular exposition, astrophysicist Hubert Reeves explains current scientific understanding of the deepest mysteries of the universe in terms that will excite, stimulate, and educate the nonscientific reader. When it was first published in France in 1981, this book quickly became a best-seller and was avidly embraced by the popular press. The reviewer for L'Express, for example, wrote that "Reeves turns astrophysics into an epic saga, a metaphysical fresco, a story in the fullest sense of the word. [He can do this] because he forgets to be a professor. Facing the sky, his eternal home, he recounts the titanic struggle of primordial forces that, over the course of billions of years, formed the cosmos and all it contains...." The book falls into three broad sections. The first explores the implications of the discovery that the universe does indeed have a history - that the night sky that so excites our wonder is not static but has both a beginning and an end. The second uncovers the layers of evolution that comprise that history, from the cosmic phase in the first few moments of the universe when energy first transformed itself into matter, to the biological phase when matter transformed itself into life. The third goes behind the scenes of the universal drama to examine such basic concepts as time, energy, and chance. Reeves' style is metaphorical, determinedly naive, and even slightly anthropomorphic. Music becomes a metaphor for all of the orderliness in the universe that might just as easily have been cosmic "noise" if there had been no guiding principles at work. To understand those guiding principles, and to gain a fuller appreciation of the music that they produce, is` the goal of this enlightening and poetic book.

Download or read book Computer Crime Law written by Orin S. Kerr and published by West Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the future of criminal law. It covers every aspect of crime in the digital age, assembled together for the first time. Topics range from Internet surveillance law and the Patriot Act to computer hacking laws and the Council of Europe cybercrime convention. More and more crimes involve digital evidence, and computer crime law will be an essential area for tomorrow's criminal law practitioners. This is the first law school book dedicated entirely to computer crime law. The materials are authored entirely by Orin Kerr, a new star in the area of criminal law and Internet law who has recently published articles in the Harvard Law Review, Columbia Law Review, NYU Law Review, and Michigan Law Review. The book is filled with ideas for future scholarship, including hundreds of important questions that have never been addressed in the scholarly literature. The book reflects the author's practice experience, as well: Kerr was a computer crime prosecutor at the Justice Department for three years, and the book combines theoretical insights with practical tips for working with actual cases. Students will find it easy and fun to read, and professors will find it an angaging introduction to a new world of scholarly ideas. Download or read book CyberForensics written by Jennifer Bayuk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-10 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyberforensics is a fairly new word in the technology our industry, but one that n- ertheless has immediately recognizable meaning. Although the word forensics may have its origins in formal debates using evidence, it is now most closely associated with investigation into evidence of crime. As the word cyber has become synonymous with the use of electronic technology, the word cyberforensics bears no mystery. It immediately conveys a serious and concentrated endeavor to identify the evidence of crimes or other attacks committed in cyberspace. Nevertheless, the full implications of the word are less well understood. Cyberforensic activities remain a mystery to most people, even those fully immersed in the design and operation of cyber te- nology. This book sheds light on those activities in a way that is comprehensible not only to technology professionals but also to the technology hobbyist and those simply curious about the ?eld. When I started contributing to the ?eld of cybersecurity, it was an obscure ?eld, rarely mentioned in the mainstream media. According to the FBI, by 2009 organized crime syndicates were making more money via cybercrime than in drug traf?- ing. In spite of the rise in cybercrime and the advance of sophisticated threat actors online, the cyber security profession continues to lag behind in its ability to inves- gate cybercrime and understand the root causes of cyber attacks. In the late 1990s I worked to respond to sophisticated attacks as part of the U. S.

Book Social Deviance

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tim Delaney
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2017-06-16
  • ISBN : 1442252545
  • Pages : 481 pages

Download or read book Social Deviance written by Tim Delaney and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-06-16 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of social deviance is inherently intriguing. People in general, and college students in particular, find the topic of deviant behavior fascinating. This can be explained, at least in part, by a combination of the subject matter itself, our own past deviant behaviors, and our willingness and desire to evaluate and comment on the behaviors of others. While the topic of deviant behavior seems straightforward at the surface, the study of social deviance reveals how complicated it really is. Although Social Deviance utilizes a textbook-style approach in its coverage of deviant behavior, this comprehensive, straightforward, and student-friendly book maintains student interest because of the author's use of real life phenomena and current examples. Each chapter includes chapter objectives, an introductory story, a glossary of key terms, discussion questions, and boxed material. The boxed materials include "A Closer Look" box that zooms in on topics that warrant deeper explanation; and a "Connecting Social Deviance and Popular Culture" box that shows how contemporary forms of popular culture illustrate deviant behavior.

Book Crime and Deviance in Cyberspace

Download or read book Crime and Deviance in Cyberspace written by DavidS. Wall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the reader with an interesting and, at times, provocative selection of contemporary thinking about cybercrimes and their regulation. The contributions cover the years 2002-2007, during which period internet service delivery speeds increased a thousand-fold from 56kb to 56mb per second. When combined with advances in networked technology, these faster internet speeds not only made new digital environments more easily accessible, but they also helped give birth to a completely new generation of purely internet-related cybercrimes ranging from spamming, phishing and other automated frauds to automated crimes against the integrity of the systems and their content. In order to understand these developments, the volume introduces new cybercrime viewpoints and issues, but also a critical edge supported by some of the new research that is beginning to challenge and surpass the hitherto journalistically-driven news stories that were once the sole source of information about cybercrimes.

Book Cybercrime

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gráinne Kirwan
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2013-08-08
  • ISBN : 110727642X
  • Pages : 281 pages

Download or read book Cybercrime written by Gráinne Kirwan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-08 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cybercrime is a growing problem in the modern world. Despite the many advantages of computers, they have spawned a number of crimes, such as hacking and virus writing, and made other crimes more prevalent and easier to commit, including music piracy, identity theft and child sex offences. Understanding the psychology behind these crimes helps to determine what motivates and characterises offenders and how such crimes can be prevented. This textbook on the psychology of the cybercriminal is the first written for undergraduate and postgraduate students of psychology, criminology, law, forensic science and computer science. It requires no specific background knowledge and covers legal issues, offenders, effects on victims, punishment and preventative measures for a wide range of cybercrimes. Introductory chapters on forensic psychology and the legal issues of cybercrime ease students into the subject, and many pedagogical features in the book and online provide support for the student.
