Book Federated Query Processing for the Semantic Web

Download or read book Federated Query Processing for the Semantic Web written by C. Buil-Aranda and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2014-01-22 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last years, the amount of RDF data has increased exponentially over the Web, exposed via SPARQL endpoints. These SPARQL endpoints allow users to direct SPARQL queries to the RDF data. Federated SPARQL query processing allows to query several of these RDF databases as if they were a single one, integrating the results from all of them. This is a key concept in the Web of Data and it is also a hot topic in the community. Besides of that, the W3C SPARQL-WG has standardized it in the new Recommendation SPARQL 1.1._x000D_ This book provides a formalisation of the W3C proposed recommendation. This formalisation allows to identify existing errors and allows to correct them before the implementation phase or when the execution of these federated queries start. The book constitutes a valuable resource for any implementer since it also proposes solutions to the problems identified as well as proposing a set of SPARQL pattern reordering rules, which reduce the execution time of federated queries significantly._x000D_ Another strong point of this book is the research methodology followed. It states clearly the problems in the state of the art, next defines the research hypothesis for next providing a thoroughly analysis of the semantics of the SPARQL 1.1 specification. Once the theoretical part is concluded the book steps into the implementation part, describing clearly the implementation decisions for finally evaluating the overall system.

Book excerpt: RDF Database Systems is a cutting-edge guide that distills everything you need to know to effectively use or design an RDF database. This book starts with the basics of linked open data and covers the most recent research, practice, and technologies to help you leverage semantic technology. With an approach that combines technical detail with theoretical background, this book shows how to design and develop semantic web applications, data models, indexing and query processing solutions. - Understand the Semantic Web, RDF, RDFS, SPARQL, and OWL within the context of relational database management and NoSQL systems - Learn about the prevailing RDF triples solutions for both relational and non-relational databases, including column family, document, graph, and NoSQL - Implement systems using RDF data with helpful guidelines and various storage solutions for RDF - Process SPARQL queries with detailed explanations of query optimization, query plans, caching, and more - Evaluate which approaches and systems to use when developing Semantic Web applications with a helpful description of commercial and open-source systems

Book Query Optimization for Database Federation Systems

Download or read book Query Optimization for Database Federation Systems written by Di Wang and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Database federation is one approach to data integration, in which a middleware, called mediator, provides uniform access to a number of heterogeneous data sources. In this thesis, we focus on the query optimization for distributed joins over database federation. One important observation in query optimization over distributed database system is that run-time conditions (namely available buffer size, CPU utilization in machine and network environment) can significantly affect the execution cost of a query plan. However, in existing database federation systems, very few studies have addressed run-time conditions. It is a challenging problem, because usually the mediator is not able to know the run-time conditions of remote sites and considering run-time conditions will bring about extra complexity to the optimizer. This thesis proposes the Cluster-and-Conquer algorithm for query optimization over database federation while efficiently considering run-time conditions. This algorithm has three-fold benefits. Firstly, the run-time conditions of machines are now available for cluster mediator. Secondly, each cluster mediator can deal with its own sub query concurrently, so the complexity of processing query plan is decreased. Thirdly, the algorithm outperforms other related approaches in terms of "cost of costing", because it removes unnecessary inter-cluster operations in the early stage. I have implemented a prototype data federation system with Cluster-and-Conquer algorithm. The experimental results showed the capabilities and efficiency of our algorithm and described the target scenarios where the algorithm performs better than other related approaches.
