Download or read book Celtic Knotwork Borders in Repeating Sections written by Bradley W. Schenck and published by . This book was released on 2012-05-08 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celtic Knotwork Borders in Repeating Sections is a collection of original Celtic knotwork border designs presented in a way that's meant to allow artists the freedom to create knotwork borders in virtually any size, and practically any shape, that they want. The book uses a modular system in which a border design is reduced to either two or five straight sections, plus a variety of arc sections with different numbers of repeats around a full circle. These sections are meant to be rotated as needed to form square, rectangular, or circular borders for use in your work. Not only are there straight and corner sections for each pattern, but every one of them also includes circle sections in several numbers of repeats around a full circle. Half of the designs also feature "inner border" variations. These are designed to branch inward from the main borders with T sections, and the inner borders can cross in the middle of the border with the provided crosspieces. The book's approach is based on the author's experience of more than 25 years. It's intended to teach you to think about repeating patterns in a way that'll improve your own work - the idea is that the mechanical task of laying out a border should be streamlined, leaving you free to concentrate on the much more creative work of painting, carving, or dyeing it. The text includes ideas on how to scale the patterns - they're printed here in many sizes, but it's inevitable that you'll want more - and that, and other information, is given for both digital and traditional artists. You can use these designs in any way you like for your own work. You're completely free to sell that work, or reproductions of that work. You just aren't allowed to make a clip art collection out of them, or otherwise reproduce the pattern sections alone in a form that others can use.

Download or read book Pictorial Archive of Decorative Frames Labels written by Carol Belanger Grafton and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The joining of words and pictures in advertising art is nowhere more intimate than in mortised cuts. This printer's term refers to designs, usually pictorial, engraved on wood, or stereotyped in metal from wood blocks, with one or more hole sawn into the plates so type could be inserted. Less strictly, it applies to the images printed from such cuts. In some 19th-century specimen books, the word "pierced" is used as a synonym for "mortised." These cuts, perhaps more than any other genre of advertising art, conveys a period feeling so distinctive that they are among the most-sought-after graphic elements from 19th-century sources. For all their popularity, both then and now, these cuts are widely scattered through files of old periodicals and typefounders' and engravers' catalogues. The present collection represent an extensive search through rare printed materials too numerous to list here. The collection features 551 of the most interesting and versatile images, arranged in categories. Anyone who has tried to find a vaguely remembered cut in one of the old specimen books, in which cuts were usually arranged haphazardly, will appreciate this organization, especially considering the sheer number of designs contained in the book. It is probably the largest and most varied compendium exclusively devoted to this genre of wood-engraving available today.

Download or read book Style and Function in Roman Decoration written by Ellen Swift and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book puts forward a new interpretation of Roman decorative art, focusing on the function of decoration in the social context. It examines the three principal areas of social display and conspicuous consumption in the Roman world: social space, entertainment, and dress, and discusses the significance of the decoration of objects and interiors within these contexts, drawing examples from both Rome and its environs, and the Western provinces, from the early Imperial period to Late Antiquity. Focusing on specific examples, including mosaics and other interior décor, silver plate, glass and pottery vessels, and jewellery and other dress accessories, Swift demonstrates the importance of decoration in creating and maintaining social networks and identities and fostering appropriate social behaviour, and its role in perpetuating social convention and social norms. It is argued that our understanding of stylistic change and the relationship between this and the wider social context in the art of the Roman period is greatly enhanced by an initial focus on the particular social relationships fostered by decorated objects and spaces. The book demonstrates that an examination of so-called 'minor art' is fundamental in any understanding of the relationship between art and its social context, and aims to reinvigorate debate on the value of decoration and ornament in the Roman period and beyond.
