Moving beyond traditional views of ‘Roman provincial architecture’, the aim is to highlight the multi-faceted features of these architectures, their function, impact and significance within the local cultures, and the dynamic discourse between periphery and center. Architecture is intended in the broad sense of the term, encompassing the buildings’ technological components as well as their ornamental and epigraphic apparatuses. The geographic framework under examination is a broad one: along with well-documented areas of the ancient Mediterranean, attention is also paid to the territories of north-west Europe. The discussion throughout the volume focuses on three interrelated themes – models, agency, and reception. The broader scope of these essays is to give a reinvigorated impetus to the scholarly debate on the role and influence of ancient architectures beyond the center of Empire. Book excerpt: The region of Rough Cilicia (modern area the south-western coastal area of Turkey), known in antiquity as Cilicia Tracheia, constitutes the western part of the larger area of Cilicia. It is characterised by the ruggedness of its territory and the protection afforded by the high mountains combined with the rugged seacoast fostered the prolific piracy that developed in the late Hellenistic period, bringing much notoriety to the area. It was also known as a source of timber, primarily for shipbuilding. The twenty-two papers presented here give a useful overview on current research on Rough Cilicia, from the Bronze Age to the Byzantine period, with a variety of methods, from surveys to excavations. The first two articles (Yağcı, Jasink and Bombardieri), deal with the Bronze and Iron Ages, and refer to the questions of colonisation, influences, and relations. The following four articles (Tempesta, de Souza, Tomaschitz, Rauh et al.) concern the pirates of Cilicia and Isauria who were a big problem, not only for the region but throughout the Mediterranean and Aegean during the late Hellenistic and especially Roman periods. Approaching the subject of Roman Architecture, Borgia recalls Antiochus IV of Commagene, a king with good relations to Rome. Six papers (Spanu, Townsend, Giobbe, Hoff, Winterstein, and Wandsnider) publish work on Roman architecture: architectural decoration, council houses, Roman temples, bath architecture, cenotaph, and public buildings. Ceramics is not neglected and Lund provides a special emphasis on ceramics to demonstrate how pottery can be used as evidence for connections between Rough Cilicia and northwestern Cyprus. Six contributions (Varinliog(lu, Ferrazzoli, Jackson, Elton, Canevello and Özy?ld?r?m, Honey) deal with the Early Christian and Byzantine periods and cover rural habitat, trade, the Kilise Tepe settlement, late Roman churches, Seleucia, and the miracles of Thekla. The final article (Huber) gives insight into methods applied to the study of architectural monuments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excavations carried since 1965 at Nea Paphos by the Polish Archeological Mission have produced a number of important discoveries. One of the most spectacular was the so-called Villa of Theseus, a Roman palace, one of the largest in the Mediterranean, probably an official residence of the Roman governors of Cyprus. It comprised a series of figural mosaics, marble sculptures and a quantity of small finds. The so-called House of Aion, another Roman edifice unearthed in 1983/84 has yielded a truly unique set of figural mosaics with mythological themes. All these finds testify to the importance of Nea Paphos the "sacred metropolis of all the cities of the island". Investigations carried out under the Roman buildings have produced rich finds relating to earlier periods. Fragments of Hellenistic streets, drains, houses, workshops, hundreds of artifacts of all kinds allow to draw a picture of the development of the town from the end of the 4th cent. B.C., a probable date of its official founding, down to the Roman period. The present study, the third volume in our series entitled "Nea Paphos" has at its basis almost twenty campaigns of excavations and innumerable field obserevations made by all members of the mission and the authoress herself who participated for several years in the field work. The study reconsiders all the existing archaeological data and all other sources pertaining to the early history of the town, be they epigraphical or literary. Upon this basis it draws a multifacial picture of the town development in the first three centuries of its existence.
