Book Decontamination of Radioactive Waste Air

Download or read book Decontamination of Radioactive Waste Air written by R. Philip Hammond and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contaminated waste air has been treated with a baffle-plate scrubbing tower with 42 plates in three stages. The air was sampled for activity before and after each stage and the effect of several process variables investigated. With only six plates per stage in use the efficiency for plain cold water washing was 99.6 percent or better, and was 99.92 percent for the cloud chamber mode of operation. Some data on particle size and preliminary engineering figures are given.

Book Handbook of Radioactive Contamination and Decontamination

Download or read book Handbook of Radioactive Contamination and Decontamination written by Jan Severa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1991-12-04 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to present a comprehensive picture, first of the fundamentals of general contamination of solid surfaces and water, and in the second part, to review the main practical procedures and means of applied decontamination used in the fields of activity. The most emphasis on radioactive contamination deals with decontamination of the operational facilities in nuclear power plants. Other special decontamination branches of current interest are also dealt with briefly. The art of decontamination is being enriched by the progress achieved in relevant scientific disciplines and employs these relative advances. The current volume discusses in detail the following trends in decontamination: Firstly, the development and use of new decontamination methods that are highly efficient, non-agressive to decontaminated materials, and economically feasible; secondly, the utilization of progressive elements of automation and robotics; thirdly, the development and use of such decontamination formulations that would minimize the volume of wastes and would produce wastes in a form in which they could be either easily further treated or safely disposed of without risk to human health or the environment; finally, the choice of suitable materials used both for the structural and the technological parts of nuclear installations with regard to their minimal contaminability and ease of decontamination.

Download or read book Surface Contamination written by B. R. Fish and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface Contamination presents the proceedings of first International Symposium on Surface Contamination, held at Gatlinburg, Tennessee in June 1964. The meeting discusses the potential hazards brought about by noxious contaminants on surfaces; the effects of contamination to human health and safety; and the integrity of scientific and technical machinery and products in meeting the exacting requirements. The book contains the work of experts from different technical and administrative disciplines. Areas covered include fundamental research on redispersible and evaporable contamination, including radioactive, biological, chemical, and abrasive contaminants. Administrative and technical problems on radioactive surface contamination control criteria; measurement techniques; environmental control of surface contamination; dissemination of airborne microorganisms; radioactive contamination control applications; biological and chemical surface contamination; insurance and economics; and decontamination are tackled as well. The text will be a good source of information for ecologists, environmentalists, chemists, biologists, students, and policymakers.

Book Decontamination of Hot Cells K 1 K 3 M 1 M 3 and A 1 M Wing Building 200

Download or read book Decontamination of Hot Cells K 1 K 3 M 1 M 3 and A 1 M Wing Building 200 written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to remove radioactively contaminated materials and equipment from the hot cells, to decontaminate the hot cells, and to dispose of the radioactive waste. The goal was to reduce stack releases of Rn-220 and to place the hot cells in an emptied, decontaminated condition with less than 10 [mu]Sv/h (1 mrem/h) general radiation background. The following actions were needed: organize and mobilize a decontamination team; prepare decontamination plans and procedures; perform safety analyses to ensure protection of the workers, public, and environment; remotely size-reduce, package, and remove radioactive materials and equipment for waste disposal; remotely decontaminate surfaces to reduce hot cell radiation background levels to allow personnel entries using supplied air and full protective suits; disassemble and package the remaining radioactive materials and equipment using hands-on techniques; decontaminate hot cell surfaces to remove loose radioactive contaminants and to attain a less than 10 [mu]Sv/h (1 mrem/h) general background level; document and dispose of the radioactive and mixed waste; and conduct a final radiological survey.

Book Strategy and Methodology for Radioactive Waste Characterization

Download or read book Strategy and Methodology for Radioactive Waste Characterization written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade significant progress has been achieved in the development of waste characterization and control procedures and equipment as a direct response to ever-increasing requirements for quality and reliability of information on waste characteristics. Failure in control procedures at any step can have important, adverse consequences and may result in producing waste packages which are not compliant with the waste acceptance criteria for disposal, thereby adversely impacting the repository. The information and guidance included in this publication corresponds to recent achievements and reflects the optimum approaches, thereby reducing the potential for error and enhancing the quality of the end product. -- Publisher's description.

Book Reflections on the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Accident

Download or read book Reflections on the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Accident written by Joonhong Ahn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on nuclear engineering education in the post-Fukushima era. It was edited by the organizers of the summer school held in August 2011 in University of California, Berkeley, as part of a collaborative program between the University of Tokyo and UC Berkeley. Motivated by the particular relevance and importance of social-scientific approaches to various crucial aspects of nuclear technology, special emphasis was placed on integrating nuclear science and engineering with social science. The book consists of the lectures given in 2011 summer school and additional chapters that cover developments in the past three years since the accident. It provides an arena for discussions to find and create a renewed platform for engineering practices, and thus nuclear engineering education, which are essential in the post-Fukushima era for nurturing nuclear engineers who need to be both technically competent and trusted in society.

Book An Introduction to Nuclear Waste Immobilisation

Download or read book An Introduction to Nuclear Waste Immobilisation written by Michael I. Ojovan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-07-07 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safety and environmental impact is of uppermost concern when dealing with the movement and storage of nuclear waste. The 20 chapters in 'An Introduction to Nuclear Waste Immobilisation' cover all important aspects of immobilisation, from nuclear decay, to regulations, to new technologies and methods. Significant focus is given to the analysis of the various matrices used in transport: cement, bitumen and glass, with the greatest attention being given to glass. The last chapter concentrates on the performance assessment of each matrix, and on new developments of ceramics and glass composite materials, thermochemical methods and in-situ metal matrix immobilisation. The book thoroughly covers all issues surrounding nuclear waste: from where to locate nuclear waste in the environment, through nuclear waste generation and sources, treatment schemes and technologies, immobilisation technologies and waste forms, disposal and long term behaviour. Particular attention is paid to internationally approved and worldwide-applied approaches and technologies. * Each chapter focuses on a different matrix used in nuclear waste immobilisation: Cement, bitumen, glass and new materials. * Keeps the most important issues surrounding nuclear waste – such as treatment schemes and technologies, and disposal - at the forefront.
