Book excerpt: "By definition, this generation -- those born between the early sixties and late seventies -- has no "hard edges". It is a generation based on formative experiences and pivotal events rather than specific birthdates and cohort size. Essentially, you are a Nexus if you first felt the effects of the computer chip and global media at some point during your formative years. This means you could have encountered a PC for the first time in university or mastered Pong (the first video game) at the age of seven. You could be Nexus if you watched live CNN coverage of the Gulf War at high school, saw the space shuttle Challenger blow up in high school, or were the first kid in your neighbourhood with cable TV and a remote control." (p.17,18).

Book The Multigenerational Workplace

Download or read book The Multigenerational Workplace written by Jennifer Abrams and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridge the generation gap and achieve outstanding results! You might expect the occasional age-related misunderstanding to find its way into the classroom—after all, if today’s kids aren’t exactly from another planet, they’re definitely from another generation. At least you and your colleagues are all on the same page...right? Not necessarily. In some schools, as many as four generations work side by side, and that means countless chances for crossed wires, miscommunication, and perhaps even mistrust. Authors Jennifer Abrams and Valerie von Frank are attuned to these generational differences. In this book, based on Abrams’ popular workshop, the authors demonstrate how educators can look past their own generational filters to reap the benefits of seeing through a new lens. Focusing on the major contexts in which generational differences play out—including recruitment, coaching, professional learning, and succession planning—this book offers Tools, checklists, and recommendations for collaborating, evaluating, and engaging in professional learning that meets multigenerational needs Professional development activities that cultivate an understanding of generational differences and strengthen workplace culture Real-life stories and case studies that bring the topic to life With this honest, practical, and often amusing look at generations at work, you’ll learn to improve communication, retain staff, and look toward succession—a multigenerational plan for school success. "Few people today are taking on this topic, particularly in the U.S. One of the greatest leadership challenges of this age is how to work across generations. Newer generations are not flawed versions of previous generations—each has its own compelling perspective to contribute. This is the best book to add to an issue that affects all educators and will open up many people’s thinking about leadership." — Andy Hargreaves, Thomas More Brennan Chair Lynch School of Education Boston College, MA

Book The New Social Learning

Download or read book The New Social Learning written by Tony Bingham and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to help organizations understand and harness the extraordinary workplace learning potential of social media Cowritten by the CEO of the world's largest workplace learning organization and a consultant and writer with extensive experience on the forefront of workplace learning technology Features case studies showing how organizations around the world have transformed their businesses through social media Most business books on social media have focused on using it as a marketing tool. Many employers see it as simply a workplace distraction. But social media has the potential to revolutionize workplace learning. People have always learned best from one another -- social media enables this to happen unrestricted by physical location and in extraordinarily creative ways. The New Social Learning is the most authoritative guide available to leveraging these powerful new technologies. Tony Bingham and Marcia Conner explain why social media is the ideal solution to some of the most pressing educational challenges organizations face today, such as a widely dispersed workforce and striking differences in learning styles, particularly across generations. They definitively answer common objections to using social media as a training tool and show how to win over even the most resistant employees. Then, using examples from a wide range of organizations -- including Deloitte, IBM, TELUS, and others -- Bingham and Conner help readers sort through the dizzying array of technological options available and decide when and how to use each one to achieve key strategic goals. Social media technologies -- everything from 140-character "microsharing" messages to media-rich online communities to complete virtual environments and more -- enable people to connect, collaborate, and innovate on levels never before dreamed of. They make learning dramatically more dynamic, stimulating, enjoyable, and effective. This greatly anticipated book helps organizations create a contemporary learning strategy that is as timely as it is transformative.

Book Generational Diversity at Work

Download or read book Generational Diversity at Work written by Emma Parry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade much attention has been paid to the apparent differences in consumption preferences or workplace attitudes and behaviours across generations. Within Western economies such as the USA, UK and Australia, it is commonly assumed that that there are now four generations in the workplace, namely Veterans (born 1925-1942), Baby Boomers (1943-1960), Generation X (1961-1981) and Generation Y (1982- 2000) The concept of generational differences at work is one that has recently been adopted by practitioners as a basis on which to design human resource management and career management practices. However, there has been some concern in academic circles about the validity of the notion of generations and the evidence base that supports it. There is therefore a need for new perspectives and methodological approaches to investigating generational differences at work in order to establish the validity and value of generations as an axis of diversity. Generational Diversity at Work: New Research Perspectives will address this need by presenting and discussing research into generational diversity that adopts a range of new theoretical perspectives or methodological approaches. This book is designed as a first step in addressing the need to critically examine the theoretical and empirical basis for generational differences and to provide some new empirical data in this area.
