International Democracy Documents brings together the most important universal documents as well as those from Africa, the Americas, the Arab Region, Asia and Europe. The Editors provide a comprehensive General Introduction to the collection, and contextually introduce each chapter. "À n’en pas douter, ce copieux inventaire constituera un outil fort utile, et en tout cas un excellent point de départ, pour celui ou celle qui s’intéresse à la notion de démocratie en droit international. Puisse cet ouvrage contribuer, comme c’est le vœu de ses auteurs (p. 35), à faciliter la recherche, le développement et le renforcement des standards et valeurs démocratiques au plan international..." : Laurent Weyers, Revue Belge de droit international, No. 2014/2 "It is no exaggeration to recommend that every library in the “Third World’s” law schools should have this volume on their shelves." : Pranoto Iskandar, in: Indonesian Journal of International & Comparative Law (IJICL) Volume III Issue 4 (October 2016), p. 799-806

Book Human Rights Self Determination and Political Change in the Occupied Palestinian Territories

Download or read book Human Rights Self Determination and Political Change in the Occupied Palestinian Territories written by Stephen Bowen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can international human rights standards - in the civil and political sphere and in respect of economic, social and cultural rights - provide clear guidance for political change? This collection offers the reader an exposition and critical analysis of the agreements between Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organisation from the perspective of international human rights law. Covered topics include - the relevance and influence of international law on the peace-making process, - the strengths and weaknesses of the agreements and the extent to which they lay the foundation for the realization of Palestinian self-determination and the development of a democratic and civil society, - the status and obligations of both the State of Israel and the emerging Palestinian Authority in respect of the Occupied Territories, and - the continuing role of international actors and non-governmental organisations in promoting respect for human rights during a period of dramatic transition. The position of Palestinian women and the operation of international human rights standards as mechanisms for political change receive particular attention. Scholars concerned with the Middle East and anyone interested in the promotion and protection of human rights in post-conflict situations will appreciate this unique and challenging collection.

Book Democracy Minorities and International Law

Download or read book Democracy Minorities and International Law written by Steven Wheatley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-12-22 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explores the contribution that international law may make to the resolution of culture conflicts--political disputes between the members of different ethno-cultural groups--in democratic States. International law recognizes that persons belonging to minorities have the right to enjoy their own culture and peoples have the right to self-determination without detailing how these principles are to be put into effect. The emergence of democracy as a legal obligation of States permits the international community to concern itself with both the procedure and substance of 'democratic' decisions concerning ethno-cultural groups.

Book GOVERNANCE AND POLITICS MALAYSIAN CONTEXT

Download or read book GOVERNANCE AND POLITICS MALAYSIAN CONTEXT written by MAIZATUL AZILA BINTI CHEE DIN and published by PENA HIJRAH RESOURCES. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why should the university or college student study political science? What good will it do him, or her, in later life? Will it help the student in getting a job, in “getting ahead”? First of all it should be made clear that the primary objective of this political study is “citizenship training”. Its aim is to better the condition of human beings by helping them to realise their rights and obligations. However the “good” citizen, who behaves and votes regularly, is no longer good enough. Mere innocence, virtue and good intentions will not help societies develop and move in the right direction. Students must also be citizens who are knowledgeable. They must know how their governments operate, what interests and forces are behind particular policies, what the results of such policies are likely to be, who their elected representatives are, and what they stand for. The governance and political study enables students to understand the processes and institutions of societal decision-making. Such an understanding often includes knowing who makes the decision, for what reason and in whose interest, as well as how decisions can be encouraged, modified or prevented by citizens, as a member of any social systems. The purpose of governance and political study is not limited to the provision of relevant information. Students can follow a career as a professional politician. Even though the said knowledge is not required to enter the political field but it is considered an asset if one has adequate grounding in this area. This book has been ‘blended’ by three authors in order to make it more effective and relevant to the current issues so that it can be understood by the readers efficiently. Finally they can work within government bureaucracies such as ministry or a state department especially those dealing with public planning, national integration, political development, national unity, policy making and diplomatic services.

Book excerpt: Drawing on years of academic research on democracy and measurement and practical experience evaluating democratic practices for the United Nations and the Organization of American States, the author presents constructive assessment of the methods used to measure democracies that promises to bring order to the debate in academia and in practice. He has developed two instruments for quantifying and qualifying democracy: the UN Development Programme's Electoral Democracy Index and a case-by-case election monitoring tool used by the OAS.

Book Law Society and Transition in Myanmar

Download or read book Law Society and Transition in Myanmar written by Melissa Crouch and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume addresses the dynamics of the legal system of Myanmar/Burma in the context of the dramatic but incomplete transition to democracy that formally began in 2011. It includes contributions from leading scholars in the field on a range of key legal issues now facing Myanmar, such as judicial independence, constitutional law, human rights and institutional reform. It features chapters on the legal history of Myanmar; electoral reform; the role of the judiciary; economic reforms; and the state of company law. It also includes chapters that draw on the experiences of other countries to contextualise Myanmar's transition to democracy in a comparative setting, including Myanmar's participation in regional bodies such as ASEAN. This topical book comes at a critical juncture in Myanmar's legal development and will be an invaluable resource for students and teachers seeking greater understanding of the legal system of Myanmar. It will also be vital reading for a wide range of government, business and civil society organisations seeking to re-engage with Myanmar, as it navigates a difficult transition toward democracy and the rule of law.

Book Human rights and democratic governance in Kenya A post 2007 appraisal

Download or read book Human rights and democratic governance in Kenya A post 2007 appraisal written by John Osogo Ambani and published by PULP. This book was released on 2015-08-21 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is a collection of essays on human rights and democratic governance in Kenya in the period after the 2007 post-elections violence. After surviving the trauma of electoral violence, the country soon embarked on a journey towards reconstruction by engaging in, among other things, intense re-evaluation of the then existing system of laws and institutions. In the process, the daunting task has been to reverse the flawed systems that have been in existence for many decades and in their place entrench systems that would promote and respect democratic governance and human rights. This publication, therefore, documents the extent of the country’s reconstruction since 2007, and makes recommendations for the way forward for the recovery of the state.

Book Politics and Conceptual Histories

Download or read book Politics and Conceptual Histories written by Kari Palonen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international expansion of conceptual historical research during last 20 years is a remarkable turn in the academia. The conceptual confrontation of different approaches, themes and forms of research has reached several academic fields in numerous countries. From the 1990s to the present Kari Palonen has shaped and supported this change with his emphasis on its role for the study of politics. The chapters of this volume offer a testimony of the changing awareness, new thematics and multiple research orientations of this story. Palonen discusses the works of Reinhart Koselleck and Quentin Skinner as partly competing, partly converging approaches to conceptual history. He applies both Koselleck's time-centred and Skinner's rhetorical perspectives in his own studies on theorising politics. Simultaneously he emphasises the heuristic impulse of both approaches for the study of political practices, for the reorientation of parliamentary studies in particular.
