Download or read book Aviation Security written by Ruwantissa I.R. Abeyratne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1998. The various conventions which apply to the subject of unlawful interface with civil aviation have proved effective only to the extent of nurturing existing values of international law as they are restrictively perceived through the parameters of air law. This book examines the offence of unlawful interference with international civil aviation and analyses critically the legal and regulatory regime that applies thereto, with a view to recommending measures that are calculated to infuse a new approach to the problem. Emphasis is laid throughout the work on action which may be taken to alleviate the problem of unlawful interference. Its conclusion incorporates various steps that can be taken towards achieving this objective. The author focuses on the core of the problem which has effectively precluded significant progress into inroads that would curb the threat terrorism in aviation: the attitude of the international community. The book therefore examines in limine the fundamental role of international law in the light of the United Nationals Congress of International Public Law of March 1995, and its effect on international criminal law. It then determines the applicable principles of State sovereignty and examines the principles of State responsibility. Its main purpose is to recommend the establishment of a new philosophy of international criminal law which transcends municipal boundaries. Academic, scholarly and judicial precedent for this book is the adduced in support of this argument. The book also examines the role of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as the regulatory body responsible for civil aviation, in the context of new approaches made by the international community towards the status of ICAO in aviation security. The practical value of this work essentially lies in the legal recommendations it makes at its conclusion, which are based on existing principles of international law. It will thus be invaluable not only to international and aviation lawyers, criminal lawyers (both international and national), security professionals and teachers and students of international law, but also to aviation industry executives and regulatory agency specialists whose responsibilities impinge on or are determined by existing and evolving legal and security measures.

The searing romantic/political/artistic triangle at its center movingly evokes the strange and wonderful Santa Cruz garden of my youth. I loved it.” —David Talbot, author of The New York Times’ bestsellers, Brothers, and The Devil's Chessboard, and national bestseller Season of the Witch Jesse Kerf’s a good guy restaurant owner who’s got his life just so. Flash L.A. bistro, spiffy BMW, all-white condo with an ocean view. Then comes a bombshell. He’s been named sole heir to Marty Balakian, the wild man and con artist who used to be his best friend. Never mind they haven’t had a single word in twenty years. In the 1970s, Marty was everything Jesse wanted to be—a brilliant and fearless dreamer who let no one stand in his way. Not Jesse, and not Isabel, the dark-souled woman they both loved. Laws were there to be broken, and hearts, too. Jesse couldn’t be that hard. Until he had to. Marty’s death forces Jesse to reckon with the past he’s been running from for two decades. Between that long-ago love triangle, a trip that leads from Boston to Bali, and the burden of secrets held too long, Jesse’s got a lot to handle. Before he can get his life on track, he must figure out not just who he was, but who he wants to be from now on. Driven by a fast-moving plot, rich characters and a canny portrait of a culture in revolt, Richard M. Ravin’s Nothing to Declare is a lively and engaging novel packed with romance, humor, betrayal, and discovery.

Download or read book Beyond states written by Raphaela Schweiger and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the role and influence of non-state actors (NSAs) and local authorities in the process leading to the adoption of the 2018 Global Compact for Migration (GCM), the first intergovernmental negotiation of its kind at the UN. The research draws upon methods initially applied to assess global climate negotiations, and for the first time analyzes the influence of NSAs and local authorities in an international negotiation on migration. It builds on an assessment of the state of the art on global migration governance, adding new perspectives and insights. The analysis of the influence of NSAs and local authorities is backed by an online survey of participating stakeholders, interviews with key actors, and hundreds of other primary sources obtained from the process. The author finds that the UN system’s willingness to onboard NSAs was key to creating the GCM as it stands today. While the research finds little direct influence from NSAs during the negotiations, the first draft of the GCM was very much informed by their input. Local authorities, still new to the global stage, made the case for their further inclusion in global migration governance.

Book Rising Powers Global Governance and Global Ethics

Download or read book Rising Powers Global Governance and Global Ethics written by Jamie Gaskarth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of the dominant themes of discussion in international relations scholarship over the last decade have been global governance and rising powers. Underlying both discussions are profound ethical questions about how the world should be ordered, who is responsible for addressing global problems, how change can be managed, and how global governance can be made to work for peoples in developing as well as developed states. Yet, these are often not addressed or only briefly mentioned as ethical dilemmas by commentators. This book seeks to ask critical and profound questions about what relative shifts in power among states might mean for the ethics and practice of global governance. Three key questions are addressed throughout the volume: Who is rising and how? How does this impact on global governance? What are the implications of these developments for global ethics? Through these questions, some of the key academics in the field explore how far debates over global ethics are really between competing visions of how international society should be governed, as opposed to tensions within the same broad paradigm. By examining how governance works in practice across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, the contributors to this volume seek to critique the way global governance discourse masks the exercise of power by elites and states, both developed and rising. This work will be essential reading for all those with an interest in the future of international relations and global governance.

Book Mobilities Knowledge and Social Justice

Download or read book Mobilities Knowledge and Social Justice written by Suzan Ilcan and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mobility of people, objects, information, ideas, services, and capital has reached levels unprecedented in human history. Such forms of mobility are manifested in continued advances in communication and transportation capacities, in the growing use of digital and biometric technologies, in the movements of Indigenous, migrant, and women's groups, and in the expansion of global capitalism into remote parts of the world. Mobilities, Knowledge, and Social Justice demonstrates how knowledge is mobilized and how people shape, and are shaped by, matters of mobility. Richly detailed and illuminating essays reveal the ways in which issues of mobility are at the centre of debates, ranging from practices of belonging to war and border security measures, from gender, race, and class matters to governance and international trade, and from citizenship and immigration policies to human rights. Contributors analyze how particular forms of mobility generate specific types of knowledge and give rise to claims for social justice. This collection reconsiders mobility as a key term in the social sciences and humanities by delineating new ways of understanding how mobility informs and shapes lives as well as social, cultural, and political relations within, across, and beyond states. Contributors include Rob Aitken (Alberta), Tanya Basok (Windsor), Janine Brodie (Alberta), William Coleman (Waterloo), Ronjon Paul Datta (Alberta), Karl Froschauer (Simon Fraser), Daniel Gorman (Waterloo), Amanda Grzyb (Western), Suzan Ilcan (Waterloo), Eleonore Kofman (Middlesex), Anita Lacey (Auckland), Theresa McCarthy (Buffalo), Daniel J. Paré (Ottawa), Nicola Piper (Sydney), Parvati Raghuram (Open), Kim Rygiel (Wilfrid Laurier), Leslie Regan Shade (Toronto), Sandra Smeltzer (Western ), Daiva Stasiulis (Carleton), Myra Tawfik (Windsor), and Lloyd Wong (Calgary).
