Book Philosophical Lectures on Probability

Download or read book Philosophical Lectures on Probability written by Bruno de Finetti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-05-20 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruno de Finetti (1906–1985) is the founder of the subjective interpretation of probability, together with the British philosopher Frank Plumpton Ramsey. His related notion of “exchangeability” revolutionized the statistical methodology. This book (based on a course held in 1979) explains in a language accessible also to non-mathematicians the fundamental tenets and implications of subjectivism, according to which the probability of any well specified fact F refers to the degree of belief actually held by someone, on the ground of her whole knowledge, on the truth of the assertion that F obtains.

Book Decision Aids for Selection Problems

Download or read book Decision Aids for Selection Problems written by David L. Olson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important tasks faced by decision-makers in business and government is that of selection. Selection problems are challenging in that they require the balancing of multiple, often conflicting, criteria. In recent years, a number of interesting decision aids have become available to assist in such decisions. The aim of this book is to provide a comparative survey of many of the decision aids currently available. The first chapters present general ideas which underpin the methodologies used to design these aids. Subsequent chapters then focus on specific decision aids and demonstrate some of the software which implement these ideas. A final chapter provides a comparative analysis of their strengths and weaknesses.

Book Decision Probability and Utility

Download or read book Decision Probability and Utility written by Peter Gärdenfors and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-04-29 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decision theory and the theory of rational choice have recently been the subjects of considerable research by philosophers and economists. However, no adequate anthology exists which can be used to introduce students to the field. This volume is designed to meet that need. The essays included are organized into five parts covering the foundations of decision theory, the conceptualization of probability and utility, pholosophical difficulties with the rules of rationality and with the assessment of probability, and causal decision theory. The editors provide an extensive introduction to the field and introductions to each part.

Book Decision Theory and Decision Behaviour

Download or read book Decision Theory and Decision Behaviour written by A. Rapoport and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-01-27 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book treats two approaches to decision theory: (1) the normative, purporting to determine how a 'perfectly rational' actor ought to choose among available alternatives; (2) the descriptive, based on observations of how people actually choose in real life and in laboratory experiments. The mathematical tools used in the normative approach range from elementary algebra to matrix and differential equations. Sections on different levels can be studied independently. Special emphasis is made on 'offshoots' of both theories to cognitive psychology, theoretical biology, and philosophy.

Book Methods and Models for Assessing Energy Resources

Download or read book Methods and Models for Assessing Energy Resources written by Michel Grenon and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods and Models for Assessing Energy Resources covers the proceedings of the First IIASA Conference on Energy Resources, held on May 20-21, 1975. This book mainly focuses on energy resources, such as coal, oil and natural gas, and uranium resources, and the assessment of these resources. This text first discusses general activities and classification of energy resources, including the institutions involved, problems faced, and opportunities. This book then explains the methods for assessing petroleum resources. This text devotes two parts, each explaining two energy resources—coal and uranium. This book concludes by explaining the need to further the research and study of this subject. This publication will be invaluable to students and experts in the field of chemistry, particularly engaged in the study of energy resources. Sectors and industries mainly dependent on energy resources will also find this book of significance.

Book Risky Curves

Download or read book Risky Curves written by Daniel Friedman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several decades, the orthodox economics approach to understanding choice under risk has been to assume that each individual person maximizes some sort of personal utility function defined over purchasing power. This new volume contests that even the best wisdom from the orthodox theory has not yet been able to do better than supposedly naïve models that use rules of thumb, or that focus on the consumption possibilities and economic constraints facing the individual. The authors assert this by first revisiting the origins of orthodox theory. They then recount decades of failed attempts to obtain meaningful empirical validation or calibration of the theory. Estimated shapes and parameters of the "curves" have varied erratically from domain to domain (e.g., individual choice versus aggregate behavior), from context to context, from one elicitation mechanism to another, and even from the same individual at different time periods, sometimes just minutes apart. This book proposes the return to a simpler sort of scientific theory of risky choice, one that focuses not upon unobservable curves but rather upon the potentially observable opportunities and constraints facing decision makers. It argues that such an opportunities-based model offers superior possibilities for scientific advancement. At the very least, linear utility – in the presence of constraints - is a useful bar for the "curved" alternatives to clear.
