Naturalistic decision making has been widely explored in many areas of military and industrial research; however, it has not been studied in the context of the paramedic work environment. Ten volunteers were recruited to offer their testimonies regarding their lived experiences during the management of critical 9-1-1 emergency calls. Phenomenological inquiry was chosen as a method to explore paramedic field experiences while making decisions under the most stressful circumstances. Naturalistic decision making and space control theory of paramedic practice formed the theoretical framework for this study. The researcher conducted a series of semi-structured interviews with paramedic volunteers. They were asked several open-ended questions to delve into their lived experiences making rapid, critical decisions in the field. The questions explored their perceptions of environmental influences, as well as any influence that task failure may contribute to their decision making processes. The findings include the emergence of six core themes centered on an ongoing, cyclical process of situational assessment and decision making. The six emerging themes were situational awareness, workspace control, experience, temporal awareness, patient acuity, and resource management. These research findings are intended to fill gaps in the professional literature base of emergency medical service practice. Additionally, the results may be found useful in cross-domain applications to areas of emergency management, public safety, and the military. The findings of this study may aid emergency medical services educators in developing training methodologies that prepare providers at all levels to make critical decisions in the field. A deeper understanding of field decision making will ultimately assist paramedics in choosing the right interventions, for the right situation, at the right time.
