Book Deciding Communication Law

Download or read book Deciding Communication Law written by Susan Dente Ross and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-05-20 with total page 1050 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This clearly written and well-focused volume combines concise decisions of the primary areas of communication law with the foundational case decisions in those domains. Thus, in one volume, students of communication law, constitutional law, political science, and related fields find both the key rulings that define each area of law and a detailed summary of the legal concepts, doctrines, and policies so vital to understanding the rulings within their legal context. The text forgoes the tendency to provide encyclopedic treatment of all the relevant cases and focuses instead on the two or three cases most vital to an accurate and informed understanding of the current state of each field of communication law. The chapters provide readers with the most salient concepts and the necessary depth to understand the law while permitting most reading time to be directed to the law itself. Full-text rulings allow readers to immerse themselves in the law itself--to develop a feel for its complexity, its flexibility, and its language. Useful as a quick reference to the landmark rulings and the jurisprudence of communication law, this book also serves well as the primary text in related undergraduate courses or as a supplemental text in graduate classes in the field.

Book Mass Communication Law and Ethics

Download or read book Mass Communication Law and Ethics written by Roy L. Moore and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1994 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of 145 mass media law instructors in 1987 found that although two-thirds of the respondents devoted 10 percent or less of their courses to ethics, they overwhelmingly agreed that ethics should be a significant part of teaching media law. Almost half said ethics is a necessary corollary to law but that legal topics should not be dropped to make room. A similar percentage said that, in class, they distinguish between legal boundaries and standards of ethics in determining appropriate media conduct. This is the first book to explicitly combine law and ethics rather than separate them as is traditionally done. Many journalism and mass communication programs now include "ethics" in the title for the media law course -- a recognition that journalism graduates must be grounded in ethics and that a combined course is the most feasible and effective way of accomplishing this goal. Sadly, most journalism students complete their degrees with limited, if any, understanding of the symbiotic relationship between media law and ethics. Each chapter in this book includes a discussion of the ethical dimensions of that specific legal topic to demonstrate where the law ends and ethics begins. Every journalist must establish a personal code of ethics, but the standards can best be understood within the context of mass media law. The question should not be simply "How do I avoid a lawsuit?," but rather "How do I do what is right?" To help students and professors more easily grasp the concepts of the laws and the ethics surrounding them, this volume offers a supplemental student study guide, instructor's manual, and annual updates.
