Book The Artful Liar

Download or read book The Artful Liar written by Cynthia Leeds Friedlander and published by Hybrid Global Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE ARTFUL LIAR is a fictionalized memoir about disloyalty and duplicity written in the third-person as a series of stand-alone vignettes based on the author’s imagination and experiences. At the end of each vignette are five meaningful learning messages, gleaned through the life tests of that story. THE ARTFUL LIAR presents an examined life to the reader. It tells one woman’s journey and her reflections on surviving deception and betrayal. It’s meant to be a gift to women of all ages everywhere who struggle with dishonesty, cheating, infidelity and relationship loss. It’s a call to every woman to be strong, to pay attention, to listen to her gut, to rid herself of betrayers and deceivers, and to claim what she wants. Reviews for THE ARTFUL LIAR: “In THE ARTFUL LIAR, Cynthia Friedlander has given us the compelling story of a decade-long relationship between a charming sociopathic liar and the successful, talented and intelligent woman who loves him. When she at last discovers – and can no longer explain away or deny – the extent of his lies, she must learn to fight to regain her self-respect, self-esteem, and her very existence. THE ARTFUL LIAR ultimately becomes a heart-wrenching cautionary tale for modern, urban women of all ages.” –Pat Carr, author of ONE PAGE AT A TIME “Cynthia Friedlander’s THE ARTFUL LIAR delves into the story of a betrayed woman with such depth and honesty, one can almost feel her pain as she becomes aware of the extent of her betrayer’s lies. She must come to terms with the knowledge that a man she loved and shared her life with had deceived her for years, and Friedlander pours her soul into her writing of the woman’s pain and, eventual healing. Friedlander provides a service to the many people who will find comfort in seeing themselves and their stories reflected in this book.” –Ellen Schnier, LCSW, Psychotherapist “What a beautiful and graceful telling of an extraordinary story. I could not stop turning the pages and anticipating what would happen next - what great storytelling is all about. Surely this book is going to touch many lives. So many of us have been deceived by one(s) we loved; this retelling of how the author overcame, regained her confidence, and moved on was what really made the book for me. I am also very impressed with the guiding messages. Such a gift for anyone who is in the valley and trying to climb back up the mountain.” –Elise Davis-McFarland, PhD, former VP, Trident Technical College, Certified Speech-Language Pathologist “Thank you for giving us THE ARTFUL LIAR. This book stirred my emotions and interest at all times. I could feel pain and anger. What a strong and courageous woman. THE ARTFUL LIAR will help many women who have found themselves in a deceptive relationship.” –Florence Schmelzer, Native New Yorker, Relationship Survivor, Former Manager, New York Convention and Visitors Bureau

Book Deceitful Media

Download or read book Deceitful Media written by Simone Natale and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artificial intelligence (AI) is often discussed as something extraordinary, a dream--or a nightmare--that awakens metaphysical questions on human life. Yet far from a distant technology of the future, the true power of AI lies in its subtle revolution of ordinary life. From voice assistants like Siri to natural language processors, AI technologies use cultural biases and modern psychology to fit specific characteristics of how users perceive and navigate the external world, thereby projecting the illusion of intelligence. Integrating media studies, science and technology studies, and social psychology, Deceitful Media examines the rise of artificial intelligence throughout history and exposes the very human fallacies behind this technology. Focusing specifically on communicative AIs, Natale argues that what we call "AI" is not a form of intelligence but rather a reflection of the human user. Using the term "banal deception," he reveals that deception forms the basis of all human-computer interactions rooted in AI technologies, as technologies like voice assistants utilize the dynamics of projection and stereotyping as a means for aligning with our existing habits and social conventions. By exploiting the human instinct to connect, AI reveals our collective vulnerabilities to deception, showing that what machines are primarily changing is not other technology but ourselves as humans. Deceitful Media illustrates how AI has continued a tradition of technologies that mobilize our liability to deception and shows that only by better understanding our vulnerabilities to deception can we become more sophisticated consumers of interactive media.

Book Deceitful Media

Download or read book Deceitful Media written by Simone Natale and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2021 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since its inception, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been nurtured by the dream - cherished by some scientists while dismissed as unrealistic by others - that it will lead to forms of intelligence similar or alternative to human life. However, AI might be more accurately described as a range of technologies providing a convincing illusion of intelligence - in other words, not much the creation of intelligent beings, but rather of technologies that are perceived by humans as such. Deceitful Media argues that AI resides also and especially in the perception of human users. Exploring the history of AI from its origins in the Turing Test to contemporary AI voice assistants such as Alexa and Siri, Simone Natale demonstrates that our tendency to project humanity into things shapes the very functioning and implications of AI. He argues for a recalibration of the relationship between deception and AI that helps recognize and critically question how computing technologies mobilize specific aspects of users' perception and psychology in order to create what we call "AI." Introducing the concept of "banal deception," which describes deceptive mechanisms and practices that are embedded in AI, the book shows that deception is as central to AI's functioning as the circuits, software, and data that make it run. Delving into the relationship between AI and deception, Deceitful Media thus reformulates the debate on AI on the basis of a new assumption: that what machines are changing is primarily us, humans. If 'intelligent' machines might one day revolutionize life, the book provocatively suggests, they are already transforming how we understand and carry out social interactions"--

Critical Reflection showcases the role of reason in a world saturated by media-enhanced persuasion and complex scientific and technological jargon. Drawing from the classic philosophical texts, this engaging textbook on the art of analyzing arguments is also relevant to today's undergraduates in its use of real-life examples and exercises drawn mainly from media and politics. Malcolm Murray and Nebojsa Kujundzic cover the standard subjects in a one-semester course on critical thinking, offering ways to analyze arguments in the following areas: * language use * acceptability conditions for truth * categorical and propositional logic * induction * causal claims * probability reasoning * analogical reasoning * an in-depth analysis of informal fallacies Critical Reflection further distinguishes itself with in-depth answers to chapter exercises that are incorporated directly into the authors' detailed discussions. This is an ideal textbook to help professors foster autonomous thinking among their students.

It contains a large amount of undisclosed events that transpired daily within my life and community. These daily issues and transgressions directly affected my journey to who I am today. In my mother's family, the experiences ranged from lies, deceit, thievery and incest. My religious upbringing experiences ranged from deceitfulness, molestation to extortion. While experiences with both were very similar, they were catapulted by the era of my youth. The 1960s opened many doors previously kept closed.
