Book excerpt: The [alpha] decays of very neutron deficient nuclei near the Z = 82 closed proton shell are of interest because they provide us with structure information that is relevant with regard to the shell model. We used a rapidly rotating recoil catcher wheel system to study the [alpha] decays of 189Bi{sup {ital m}}, 19°Po, and 18°Pb. The system works as follows. Recoils from the back of the target, after passing through an Al degrader placed behind the target, are stopped in 300-[mu]g/cm2 Al catcher foils fixed at the edges of the wheel. These are inclined at an angle of 20 degrees with respect to the beam to maximize the catcher efficiency while keeping the thickness that [alpha] particles must travel in order to emerge of the Al foil to a minimum. This arrangement results in an effective thickness of ≈ 900 [mu]g/cm2 for recoils, but only 150 [mu]g/cm2 for the emitted [alpha] particles. Stopped recoils are then rotated between an array of 6 Si detectors in series (solid angle of 8% of 4[pi]). Half-life information can be obtained by determining the difference in counts between the detectors. This instrument has proven to be an effective tool for the study of nuclei far from stability with half-lives in the range of 1-50 ms.

In the first one .cap alpha.-decay rates of neutron-deficient even-even Pb isotopes were studied by using the UNISOR separator on-line at the Holifield Heavy Ion Research Facility. These data indicate that midway between N = 82 and N = 126, the Z = 82 shell gap may not exist. The second investigation, carried out at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory 88-Inch Cyclotron and SuperHILAC, has dealt with the delayed-proton decays of the N = 81 precursors 147Dy, 149Er, and 151Yb. All three proton spectra have sharp peaks and thus provide evidence for greatly reduced level densities in the N = 82 proton emitting nuclei 147Tb, 149Ho, and 151Tm. 6 refs., 3 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alpha-decay transitions between ground states of doubly-even nuclei are taken to represent unhindered decays. Reduced widths for these s-wave transitions behave in a regular fashion as a function of both neutron and atomic number. They are largest for nuclei two or four particles beyond a closed shell (with sharp minima at the shell) and they then decrease as the next closure is approached. The s-wave widths for 186 188 19° 192Pb, however, have been reported to behave anomalously, i.e., they purportedly increase by a factor of 30 between 186Pb (N = 104) and 192Ob (N = 110) instead of decreasing as one nears N = 126. Theoretical calculations have not reproduced this unusual behavior. The (electron-capture (EC) + .beta.) strengths were deduced from K x-ray intensities. A number of corrections are involved in such determinations. We undertook the investigation of the (EC + .beta.) decay schemes of these neutron-deficient lead isotopes, in conjunction with studies of their .cap alpha.-decay properties, to obtain more reliable .cap alpha.-branching ratios. Herein we present new information on 186Pb and discuss the partial .cap alpha. half-lives for 192Pb, 19°Pb, 188Pb, and 186Pb together with .cap alpha.-decay rates for even-even nuclei with Z greater than or equal to 78.
