  • Pages : 731 pages

Download or read book Shrimps written by Raymond T. Bauer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-08 with total page 731 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the biology of decapod shrimps, a group of animals known to most people as a nutritious and tasty food item. Shrimps are amazingly diverse in size, shape, coloration, behavior and natural history. Shrimp fisheries and aquaculture are a vital part of the USA and world economies. These crustaceans are key ecological and food-web components of marine and freshwater habitats. The book synthesizes information on the taxonomic and ecological diversity of shrimps, the structure and function of shrimp anatomy, antifouling adaptations, coloration and camouflage, reproductive biology, sexual systems, mating systems and behavior, life history strategies, symbioses between shrimps and other organisms, shrimp fisheries and aquaculture, as well as the evolution and phylogeny of shrimps. All chapters are written within an adaptational and evolutionary perspective. Important questions about shrimp biology are asked, and hypotheses for testing in future research are proposed. The book is spiced up with personal anecdotes and observations from the author’s research experiences. This book is intended as a comprehensive reference, a “go to” book about the biology of shrimps. The text is scientifically rigorous but written in a style intended for a varied readership. Thus, the book is a valuable resource for budding or working research scientists such as zoologists, aquatic biologists, fisheries and aquaculture professionals, as well as amateur naturalists, aquarium hobbyists and interested laypersons. As the saying goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” so that the book is amply illustrated with figures and diagrams. The numerous color plates, composed of photos contributed by expert colleagues, make the world of shrimps come alive.

Book Marine Decapod Crustacea

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gary C.B. Poore
  • Publisher : CSIRO PUBLISHING

Download or read book Marine Decapod Crustacea written by Gary C.B. Poore and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2023-01-23 with total page 929 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decapod crustaceans, shrimps, crabs, prawns and their allies are highly visible and important members of marine environments. They are among the most charismatic of marine animals, inhabiting beaches, rocky shores and the deep sea, hiding under stones, burrowing in the sediment and nestling in among algae and many other microhabitats. However, most are difficult to identify by the specialist and amateur naturalist alike. Marine Decapod Crustacea explains the anatomical features necessary for differentiating taxa and includes diagnoses and identification keys to all 189 families and 2121 genera of marine Decapoda. Many decapods have vivid colours, which are showcased in a selection of spectacular photographs of many representative species. This volume provides an entry to the literature for taxonomists, naturalists, consultants, ecologists, teachers and students wanting to identify local faunas and understand this diverse group

Book Evolution and Phylogeny of Pancrustacea

Download or read book Evolution and Phylogeny of Pancrustacea written by Frederick R. Schram and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific understanding of arthropod phylogeny and evolution has changed significantly in recent decades. One of the most momentous alterations involved crustaceans, which are not a monophyletc group, but are part of a larger group along with insects: Pancrustacea. The old ideas surrounding crustacean evolution have served scientists well for many years; it is now time to turn toward new research by embracing the results derived from investigations conducted largely within this century. For example, new definitions have arisen from sources across several fields of study, and Frederick R. Schram and Stefan Koenemann have created a book that explores paleobiodiversity and the diversity of modern body plans. Developments within ontogenetic studies continue to generate remarkable insights into crustaceomorph evolution in regard to patterns of embryology and a revolution in the application of development genetics. Phylogeny techniques of analysis and new sources of data derived from molecular sequencing and genetic studies have forced scientists to consider new hypotheses concerning the interrelationships of all the pancrustaceans, both the crustaceomorphs and Hexapoda. Yet, some fossil groups still remain enigmatic (Thylacocephala). Despite this, research into fossils (even if incompletely understood) fills in gaps of our knowledge of paleobiodiversity, and it's useful for many things, including analyzing the origin and early evolution of Hexapoda. Evolution and Phylogeny of Pancrustacea demonstrates the use of multiple alternative hypotheses and other techniques through the well-executed presentation of diverse data sources involving Pancrustacea. Readers are left with clues to great mysteries, including the possible pathways of evolution within marine arthropods.

Book Metabolism and Growth

    Book Details:
  • Author : Talbot Waterman
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2012-12-02
  • ISBN : 0323143407
  • Pages : 689 pages

Download or read book Metabolism and Growth written by Talbot Waterman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physiology of Crustacea, Volume I: Metabolism and Growth deals with the physiological aspects of metabolism and growth in hundreds of species and higher taxa of Crustacea. The book explores processes related to the morphology and development of crustaceans, from blood chemistry to feeding and nutrition, digestion, excretion, molting, autotomy, and regeneration. This volume is organized into 17 chapters and begins with an overview of crustacean biology and systematics as well as ontogeny and phylogeny. The book then discusses the metabolic requirements of crustacean respiration, the mechanisms of gas exchange, and respiratory transport. The next chapters focus on the biochemistry of animal pigments such as hemoglobin and melanin and the crustacean blood chemistry, blood flow, heart function, feeding mechanisms, and vitamin contents. The book also discusses the digestive system of crustaceans, along with osmotic and ionic regulation; the excretory system; the link between ecology and metabolism; and sex differentiation in Crustacea. This book is written primarily for biologists, physiologists, and zoologists, as well as advanced students and research workers who are interested in problems of comparative physiology.
