Book excerpt: Nordic Literature of Decadence fills a gap on the map of world literature and participates in a thriving area of research by extending the investigation of broadly understood fin de siècle decadence to unexplored areas of Nordic literature, which remain practically unknown to Anglophone audiences. In the Nordic countries the new Parisian movements were seen as having caused a malicious invasion, a ‘black flood’ that was spreading over the North destroying the very foundations of Nordic national cultures. Nevertheless, the appeal of this controversial movement was irresistible to discontents and innovators, even in countries where the old moral, religious and nationalist atmosphere still retained its stranglehold and modern urban, industrial and social developments lagged behind that of the metropoles breeding this new literature and art. The Nordic countries developed their own distinctive manifestations of decadence favouring allegorical and allusive forms, local rural settings and depictions of primitive nature, coupling the philosophical underpinnings of fin-de-siècle decadence with ancient Nordic mythology and rising national movements. Nordic decadence thus became a distinctive and recognizable phenomenon, which travelled back to France and other European countries, influencing the ongoing debate on decadence as it was conducted on a global scale. Nordic Literature of Decadence discusses literature from five Nordic countries: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Estonia and offers additional and alternative perspectives to the cosmopolitan traffic and cultural exchanges of literary decadence that have been explored so far in the English language scholarship.

Drawing on this wide range of writings, this book argues that Schumpeter provided a theoretical account of capitalism as a total phenomenon. It methodically reconstructs the “general theory” of capitalism present in Schumpeter's work and shows its consistency and limits. The book identifies three key dimensions of a Schumpeterian general theory of capitalism. First, capitalism is defined at its core as a form or method of economic change: the entrepreneur disrupts a static, equilibrium economy (which is the foundation of all economic activities) with the introduction of an innovation. He is an unbalancing and disruptive force. Second, capitalism is defined as an institutional order composed of private property, private initiative for private profit and credit. Finally, capitalism is defined as a "civilization" or culture: a set of values, attitudes, and beliefs. The general theory thus accounts for capitalism as an economic form (innovation and entrepreneurship) which is the source of economic change; supported and enabled by a particular institutional order without which innovation would remain a dead letter (private property, private profit, and credit); all this generates the culture of capitalism. This book will be of interest to readers in the history of economic thought, economic theory, innovation, political economy, and social theory.

Reconsidering his threshold and early atonal works, as well as his theoretical writings and a range of previously unexplored archival documents, Julie Brown argues that Schoenberg's revolutionary step was in part a response to Wagner's negative charges concerning the Jewish influence on German music. In 1898, and especially 1908, Schoenberg's Jewish identity came into confrontation with his commitment to Wagnerian modernism to provide an impetus to his radical innovations. While acknowledging the broader turn-of-the-century Viennese context, Brown draws special attention to continuities between Schoenberg's work and that of Viennese moral philosopher Otto Weininger, himself an ideological Wagnerian. She also considers the afterlife of the composer's ideological position when, in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the concept of redeeming German culture of its Jewish elements took a very different turn.

Nietzsche prepared it for publication just before he became incurably insane in early 1889, but it was held back until after his death, and finally appeared only in 1908. For much of the first century of its reception, Ecce Homo met with a sceptical response and was viewed as merely a testament to its author’s incipient madness. This was hardly surprising, since he is deliberately outrageous with the ‘megalomaniacal’ self-advertisement of his chapter titles, and brazenly claims ‘I am not a man, I am dynamite’ as he attempts to explode one preconception after another in the Western philosophical tradition. In recent decades there has been increased interest in the work, especially in the English-speaking world, but the present volume is the first collection of essays in any language devoted to the work. Most of the essays are selected from the proceedings of an international conference held in London to mark the centenary of the first publication of Ecce Homo in 2008. They are supplemented by a number of specially commissioned essays. Book excerpt: Examines the discourse in the press on Jewish crime at the turn of the 19th century - in an epoch when criminal and court-room reports became very popular and attracted a wide audience. The period 1895-1914 was marked by the development of criminal science, which attempted to find psychological and physical abnormalities identifying the "born" criminal, and by a rise in racist antisemitism. Theories of a Jewish propensity to crime were circulated. Remarkably, racial antisemitism affected the press accounts on Jewish criminals, or Jewish "accomplices" (defense attorneys, etc.) of non-Jewish criminals, only to a small degree. Of all the antisemitic narratives on Jewish criminality, the antisemitic press used mainly the image of the Jew as a rational and cunning criminal actor, coolly acting out a crime that was collective and conspiratorial in nature. Even when reporting on sexual crimes and "white slave trafficking", the papers never stressed sexual motives of Jewish defendants but only their callous greed. Dwells on the ritual murder trial of Hilsner in Bohemia, and shows the extent to which the perception of this case and even the course of the trial were affected by the press. The reports of the antisemitic press on Jewish criminality was intended for antisemitic "believers" and did not affect non-antisemites; however, this press had a great number of readers. In the Nazi period, the narrative on Jewish criminality acquired blatantly racial motifs.

This book investigates popular and scientific conceptualizations of criminals current in Austria and Germany at the turn of the last century and compares these to those in the contemporary antisemitic discourse. It challenges received historiographic assumptions about the centrality of criminal bodies and psyches in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century criminology and argues that contemporary antisemitic narratives constructed Jewish criminality not as a biologico-racial defect, but rather as a coolly manipulative force that aimed at the deliberate destruction of the basis of society itself. Through the lens of criminality this book provides new insight into the spread and nature of antisemitism in Austria-Hungary around 1900. The book also provides a re-evaluation of the phenomenon of modern Ritual Murder Trials by placing them into the context of wider narratives of Jewish crime.
