Book Debating the Good Society

Download or read book Debating the Good Society written by Andrew Bard Schmookler and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999-05-13 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debating the Good Society probes two questions lying at the heart of the ongoing culture war incontemporary America: Where does goodness come from, and how is goodsocial order to be achieved? Through the ingenious means of a fictional Internet conversation among two dozen or so Americans from various walks of life and every shade of the ideological spectrum, Debating the Good Society probes two questions lying at the heart of the ongoing culture war in contemporary America: Where does goodness come from, and how is good social order to be achieved? Traditionalists and conservatives, who tend to view human nature as inherently sinful, argue that good order must be imposed from above, by parental authority and ruling powers, by the forces of law and tradition, and, ultimately, by God. Counterculturalists and liberals, who tend to believe in the inherent goodness of human nature, claim that well-supported children will develop into well-ordered adults and that adults empowered to make their own choices will form a healthy, well-ordered society. These opposing visions underlie a host of current controversies, including philosophies of child-rearing and education, social and political policy, sexual morality, and the evolution-creation debate. By exposing the limitations of both points of view, Andrew Bard Schmookler shows how the culture war presents a challenge to all Americans. This challenge is to integrate the half-truths advanced by both sides into a higher wisdom, one that promises to take the American experiment—to see whether humans can enjoy both the blessings of liberty and the fruits of good order—to the next level of its evolution, toward which it has been straining for the better part of a century.

Book Handbook for Literary and Debating Societies Classic Reprint

Download or read book Handbook for Literary and Debating Societies Classic Reprint written by Laurence M. Gibson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook for Literary and Debating Societies The old custom, practised by mediaeval professors, of rov ing from place to place, challenging all comers to meet them in argument on any subject, has fallen into abeyance. Its modern parallel is found in Debating Societies, and even these are unfortunately somewhat on the decline. Perhaps one cause of such falling off is the difficulty of discovering suitable subjects to debate and the correspond ing difficulty of knowing where to find good books on the subjects proposed. This hand-book, undertaken at the suggestion of Dr. Robertson Nicol], is designed to help in meeting both difficulties. A number of skeleton debates are given, and after each follows a list of references, which have been carefully compiled with the object of furnishing in the main those which are easily accessible. A short chapter of directions for the guidance of chair men has been prefixed. It can hardly be considered superfluous in view of the ever recurring bewilderment of amateur chairmen when they discover the appropriateness of Lewis Carroll's postulate Let it be granted that a speech may be made on any subject and at any distance from that subject. A brief section at the end of the hand-book deals with essays. This has been severely curtailed for want of space yet, though fragmentary, it may still prove useful. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Victorian period in Britain was an “age of reform.” It is therefore not surprising that two of the era’s most eminent intellects described themselves as reformers. Both William Whewell and John Stuart Mill believed that by reforming philosophy—including the philosophy of science—they could effect social and political change. But their divergent visions of this societal transformation led to a sustained and spirited controversy that covered morality, politics, science, and economics. Situating their debate within the larger context of Victorian society and its concerns, Reforming Philosophy shows how two very different men captured the intellectual spirit of the day and engaged the attention of other scientists and philosophers, including the young Charles Darwin. Mill—philosopher, political economist, and Parliamentarian—remains a canonical author of Anglo-American philosophy, while Whewell—Anglican cleric, scientist, and educator—is now often overlooked, though in his day he was renowned as an authority on science. Placing their teachings in their proper intellectual, cultural, and argumentative spheres, Laura Snyder revises the standard views of these two important Victorian figures, showing that both men’s concerns remain relevant today. A philosophically and historically sensitive account of the engagement of the major protagonists of Victorian British philosophy, Reforming Philosophy is the first book-length examination of the dispute between Mill and Whewell in its entirety. A rich and nuanced understanding of the intellectual spirit of Victorian Britain, it will be welcomed by philosophers and historians of science, scholars of Victorian studies, and students of the history of philosophy and political economy.

Book Debating Women

Download or read book Debating Women written by Carly S. Woods and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning a historical period that begins with women’s exclusion from university debates and continues through their participation in coeducational intercollegiate competitions, Debating Women highlights the crucial role that debating organizations played as women sought to access the fruits of higher education in the United States and United Kingdom. Despite various obstacles, women transformed forests, parlors, dining rooms, ocean liners, classrooms, auditoriums, and prisons into vibrant spaces for ritual argument. There, they not only learned to speak eloquently and argue persuasively but also used debate to establish a legacy, explore difference, engage in intercultural encounter, and articulate themselves as citizens. These debaters engaged with the issues of the day, often performing, questioning, and occasionally refining norms of gender, race, class, and nation. In tracing their involvement in an activity at the heart of civic culture, Woods demonstrates that debating women have much to teach us about the ongoing potential for debate to move arguments, ideas, and people to new spaces.
