It is 1933, and the South is full of wannabe John Dillingers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our saga began with a mysterious hit-and-run accident on a narrow, snow-swept highway in eastern North Carolina at 7:15 p.m. on December 20, 1920. It ended three months later in a hail of gunfire on the fourth-deck passageway of a Panama-bound steamship in Baltimore harbor. Could these two seminal events relate to the presumed accidental deaths of seventeen elderly residents of five rural North Carolina Coastal Plain counties, each of whom just happened to be the last surviving member of his or her line? The authorities were mystified. Perhaps the reader should not expect a happy ending. Interesting? Immensely. Predictable? Absolutely not. Another page-turner? Most assuredly.
Download or read book Only Death written by David Brown and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a historical-fictional novel based on an actual event that occurred in Williamsburg County, South Carolina, in the year 1870. Some names have been changed, and some events have been embellished and expanded upon. Overall, this is what happened leading up to a very tragic climax. It started out as a friendly competition between two former Confederate soldiers for the hand of a lovely young lady. Over time, the competition developed into a feud and progressed to the point where a challenge to a duel was issued. One of the young men was very intelligent and highly educated. The other was a simple farmer. The challenge led to the death of one of these young men. One was the writer's great-grandfather. The writer was told this story over a half century ago by his grandfather. He feels that the story must be told so that others may learn what arrogance, obstinance, and vanity can lead to.

Book excerpt: Presented in chronological order, this book provides essential details about the 1,152 men and women who were legally put to death in North and South Carolina during the century after the Civil War. Each entry contains information about the criminals themselves and the deeds which cost them their lives. Based almost entirely on original archival materials such as court records, contemporary newspapers, prisoner files, appellate reports, gubernatorial correspondence, etc., a newer picture of the historical record emerges that students of Southern justice will find both revealing and disconcerting.

This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Kay and Lorin Cary illuminate new aspects of slavery in colonial America by focusing on North Carolina, which has largely been ignored by scholars in favor of the more mature slave systems in the Chesapeake and South Carolina. Kay and Cary demonstrate that North Carolina's fast-growing slave population, increasingly bound on large plantations, included many slaves born in Africa who continued to stress their African pasts to make sense of their new world. The authors illustrate this process by analyzing slave languages, naming practices, family structures, religion, and patterns of resistance. Kay and Cary clearly demonstrate that slaveowners erected a Draconian code of criminal justice for slaves. This system played a central role in the masters' attempt to achieve legal, political, and physical hegemony over their slaves, but it impeded a coherent attempt at acculturation. In fact, say Kay and Cary, slaveowners often withheld white culture from slaves rather than work to convert them to it. As a result, slaves retained significant elements of their African heritage and therefore enjoyed a degree of cultural autonomy that freed them from reliance on a worldview and value system determined by whites.
