Download or read book Death of a Glades Man A Florida Keys Mystery written by Carl Bock and published by Absolutely Amazing eBooks. This book was released on 2023-02-18 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Sam Sawyer may become my favorite crime fighter. I can’t wait for the next book in this new Florida Keys mystery series …” —Maryjane Elizabeth Jones, Heat Until Boiling They called Arthur Broom “The Glades Man,” not because he lived way out there in the river of grass, but because he was spending all his money trying to save it. And as one of the richest men in Florida there was much he could do to beat back the onslaughts of agriculture and development that were threatening the greatest wetland in North America. But that sort of thing made some powerful enemies. When he ended up dead in the water, Detective Stella Reynard had good reason to suspect it was more than a simple drowning. She recruited fishing guide and part-time sleuth Sam Sawyer to help her with the case, along with Sam’s wife Katie, a full-time forensic botanist. The challenge they faced was not a lack of suspects but too many, such was the list of people whose wealth and power Art Broom had threatened. Carl and Jane Bock are retired Professors of Biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Carl received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of California at Berkeley, while Jane holds three degrees in Botany, a B.A. from Duke, an M.A. from the University of Indiana, and a Ph.D. from Berkeley. Carl is an ornithologist and conservation biologist. Jane is a plant ecologist and an internationally recognized expert in the use of plant evidence in criminal investigations. Now largely retired from academic life, the Bocks have turned their creative efforts toward fiction writing, and are co-authors of two ongoing series, the Arizona Borderlands Mysteries and the Florida Keys Mysteries.

Mad and Fab set out to prove he's innocent-as long as they stick to their promise to Creole and Didier to stay out of trouble. Book Cold Case A Florida Keys Mystery

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A masterful whodunit..."-A Reviewer The fourth book in the Florida Keys Mystery series. Fishing guide and part-time sleuth Sam Sawyer is with a client in the remote backcountry of Everglades National Park, when they come upon the abandoned remains of an old red canoe. Forensic evidence suggests it may have belonged to Sebastian Brophy, a fisherman who disappeared without a trace twenty-five years earlier. Brophy's day job had been working as a municipal building inspector, but his passion was conservation of wildlife in Florida Bay and the everglades. Further evidence revealed that Brophy almost certainly had been murdered. Sam and his wife Katie-a forensic scientist-work with local law enforcement to search for someone with a motive to kill the man. Did Brophy have the goods on a pair of lobster and conch poachers, or had he scuttled the dreams of unscrupulous builders and developers out for revenge? The challenge, as in any cold case, was to piece together a mystery that had lain dormant for a quarter century.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER • “Altogether gripping, shocking, and brilliantly told, not just a tour de force in its stylistic range, but a great American novel, as powerful a reading experience as nearly any in our literature.”—Michael Dirda, The New York Review of Books Killing Mister Watson, Lost Man’s River, and Bone by Bone—Peter Matthiessen’s great American epic about Everglades sugar planter and notorious outlaw E. J. Watson on the wild Florida frontier at the turn of the twentieth century—were originally conceived as one vast, mysterious novel. Now, in this bold new rendering, Matthiessen has marvelously distilled a monumental work while deepening the insights and motivations of his characters with brilliant rewriting throughout. Praise for Shadow Country “Magnificent . . . breathtaking . . . Finally now we have [this three-part saga] welded like a bell, and with Watson’s song the last sound, all the elements fuse and resonate.”—Los Angeles Times “Peter Matthiessen has done great things with the Watson trilogy. It’s the story of our continent, both land and people, and his writing does every justice to the blood fury of his themes.”—Don DeLillo “The fiction of Peter Matthiessen is the reason a lot of people in my generation decided to be writers. No doubt about it. Shadow Country lives up to anyone’s highest expectations for great writing.” —Richard Ford “Shadow Country, Matthiessen’s distillation of the earlier Watson saga, represents his original vision. It is the quintessence of his lifelong concerns, and a great legacy.”—W. S. Merwin “[An] epic masterpiece . . . a great American novel.”—The Miami Herald

Book excerpt: With a style reminiscent of early David Morell and Stephen Hunter, in Bringing Back the Dead, Joe Domenici presents a classic tale of military honor pushed to its outer extreme, and the clash that inevitably occurs when those who use violence to corrupt, meet those who use it to protect. Newly retired from the U.S. Army Special Forces, and settling into a quiet retirement in the American Southwest, Ted Hickman thought he'd seen his last battle. Then he picked up the phone... After the horrors of Vietnam, for Larry Yoder, the study of theology made the world make sense again. Until his work as a Pastor took him to Belle Glade, Florida. A town built on dark secrets, and run by an old boy network bent on keeping them buried. Two qualities that made Yoder's devotion to faith and honesty dangerous. And although you won't hear it from the local cops, maybe had something to do with his sudden disappearence. Except, Yoder knows a few people whose loyalty lies outside Belle Glade's channels of power. Like Ted Hickman. Long ago, as a special forces commander in Vietnam, Hickman made a pledge to defend Yoder's life at any cost. So when Hickman gets the call that Yoder is missing, it doesn't take much convincing to get him and some of the old Vietnam "A" team on the first plane to Belle Glade. A place, located dead in the center of the Florida Everglades, where men with skills honed in the jungles of Southeast Asia might prove useful in getting some answers...

Book excerpt: In her first novel since the Pulitzer Prize–nominated The Quick and the Dead, the legendary writer takes us into an uncertain landscape after an environmental apocalypse, a world in which only the man-made has value, but some still wish to salvage the authentic. "She practices ... camouflage, except that instead of adapting to its environment, Williams’s imagination, by remaining true to itself, reveals new colorations in the ecology around her.” —A.O. Scott, The New York Times Book Review Khristen is a teenager who, her mother believes, was marked by greatness as a baby when she died for a moment and then came back to life. After Khristen’s failing boarding school for gifted teens closes its doors, and she finds that her mother has disappeared, she ranges across the dead landscape and washes up at a “resort” on the shores of a mysterious, putrid lake the elderly residents there call “Big Girl.” In a rotting honeycomb of rooms, these old ones plot actions to punish corporations and people they consider culpable in the destruction of the final scraps of nature’s beauty. What will Khristen and Jeffrey, the precocious ten-year-old boy she meets there, learn from this “gabby seditious lot, in the worst of health but with kamikaze hearts, an army of the aged and ill, determined to refresh, through crackpot violence, a plundered earth”? Rivetingly strange and beautiful, and delivered with Williams’s searing, deadpan wit, Harrow is their intertwined tale of paradise lost and of their reasons—against all reasonableness—to try and recover something of it.

Their writing reflects solid knowledge of Arizona and its denizen. And their storytelling is as sharp as a serpent's tooth." —Nicolas Gilmartin Teranzi, Online Critics Corner There is a killer at large in the oak grasslands of southeastern Arizona whose weapon of choice is a deadly variety of southwestern rattlesnake. Deputy Sheriff Calvin Creede doesn't like snakes, but with the help of veteran herpetologist Dr. Hazel Smith and his fiancé, Maria Obregon, he seeks to find the mountain cave from which a collection of Mojave rattlesnakes recently was looted. Then he must determine which of a variety of suspects has taken them home. In this, the second installment of Arizona Borderland Mysteries, Carl and Jane Bock continue their story about a deputy sheriff in an isolated corner of Arizona's smallest county. It is a land once dominated by a few cowboys and their cattle, but Deputy Creede finds his job increasingly complicated by the trappings of southwestern exurbia, including vineyards, drugs, border tension, and high-end housing developments.
