Book excerpt: From an author with “a chilling insight into the mean streets of South Africa” comes a crime thriller set before and after the fall of Apartheid (Robert Foster, bestselling author of The Lunar Code). South Africa, 1961. Danny Waterman is a young and idealistic newspaper reporter when he clashes with the corrupt Afrikaner detective Koos van Blatter. Koos is determined to take his revenge, and Danny is forced to flee the country. But he leaves behind the woman he loves, alone and vulnerable. Will she be Koos’s next victim? South Africa, 1996. Two years into the fall of Apartheid, the country is transformed. Thirty-five years after he fled the country, Danny is determined to seek justice at last. And discover the truth about the woman he once loved. Across the bleak South African veldt, the prey becomes the hunter. And a crime is about to be avenged. Book Death at the Jesus Hospital

Download or read book Death at the Jesus Hospital written by David Dickinson and published by Soho Press. This book was released on 2012-03-13 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three men are found with their throats cut, and all are connected in some way to an ancient City of London livery company, the Silkworkers. Lord Powerscourt has no shortage of suspects or suspicions. The first victim had shadowy links with the Secret Service. The second had wiped fifteen years out of his own past. The third, a man who collected women at church during Christmas Carol services, had been threatened by angry husbands and disinherited sons. All the victims had been opposed to the reorganization of the Silkworkers' finances and, interestingly, Sir Peregrine Fishborne, the head of the Silkworkers, was present just before each victim's death. Lord knows that the key to solving the mystery lies in the strange markings found on the bodies, which no coroners can identify. From the Hardcover edition.

Book Race and Suicide in South Africa

Download or read book Race and Suicide in South Africa written by Fatima Meer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-05 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1976 Race and Suicide in South Africa synthesises the two dimensions of suicide: the personal and the social phenomenon. Its approach is Durkheimian in the use of court records, and phenomenological in the examination of actual cases. About 1500 cases of suicide in Durban from 1940-70 are analysed in terms of race, sex, occupation, marital status, economic status, family type and size, residential area, time and method used. What emerges is a revealing picture of suicide in South African ethnic groups. The findings confute the idea of Durkheim and others that behaviour in suicide conforms to certain universal principles and suggest the crucial role of particular social conditions in determining suicide trends, while at the same time challenging the proposition that a high suicide rate is associated with high status. Instead the author found that there were common emotional syndromes among suicides, but there were contributed to by different social factors.

Book excerpt: The world in the 1940s and '50s was a very different place from what it is now, but nowhere more so than South Africa. This is a book of nostalgia, of a boyhood in Durban and in particular Isipingo Beach on the Natal South Coast. Of a time where nature reigned and school boys had the freedom to roam far and wide, to explore and enjoy a unique environment. Dick Knight lived in Durban from 1944 to 1950, then in Isipingo Beach from 1950 to 1958. He has lived in New Zealand from 1961 until the present, returning to South Africa on holiday several times in that period. Africa: My Youth is his boyhood experience and his tribute to the land of his birth. It will awaken nostalgic memories in the minds of most of his peers, and it will also paint a graphic picture for today's younger generation.

Download or read book Violent Accounts written by Robert N. Kraft and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violent Accounts presents a compelling study of how ordinary people commit extraordinary acts of violence and how perpetrators and victims manage in the aftermath. Grounded in extensive, qualitative analysis of perpetrator testimony, the volume reveals the individual experiences of perpetrators as well as general patterns of influence that lead to collective violence. Drawing on public testimony from the amnesty hearings of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the book interweaves hundreds of hours of testimony from seventy-four violent perpetrators in apartheid South Africa, including twelve major cases that involved direct interactions between victims and perpetrators. The analysis of perpetrator testimony covers all tiers on the hierarchy of organized violence, from executives who translated political doctrine into general strategies, to managers who translated these general strategies into specific plans, to the staff—the foot soldiers—who carried out the destructive plans of these managers. Vivid and accessible, Violent Accounts is a work of innovative scholarship that transcends the particulars of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to reveal broader themes and unexpected insights about perpetrators of collective violence, the confrontations between victims and perpetrators in the aftermath of this violence, the reality of multiple truths, the complexities of reconciliation, and lessons of restorative justice.
