Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fabulous surroundings of the sacred city of Christianity and Islam, Constantinople or Istanbul, a young, innocent but desperate housewife of striking beauty gradually becomes entangled in a web of a glamorous career in fashion modeling, trusting the promises of a unscrupulous filthy rich Jewish patroness for a rapid financial advancement and a luxurious lifestyle. However, soon enough the two roles undergo a profound transformation, as the patroness’ motives prove to be much more subtle and noble than simply turning a pretty woman into a pin-up girl, or possibly an aristocratic call-girl, while the innocent victim’s secret intentions are much more hideous than simply starting a lucrative career in fashion or artistic photography might imply. In fact, after an unexpected and mysterious death, it becomes even vaguer if this tragic event is just an accident or a well orchestrated assassination by a blackmailed victim. Incidentally, two retired military officers from the EU who are visiting Istanbul as tourists investigating mysterious historic events as archeological amateur detectives get also involved in this enigmatic affair, as they discern several fuzzy coincidences relating this untimely death with the accidental demise of a past Ottoman Sultan many centuries ago. The fog over Istanbul gradually thickens, as progressively more unscrupulous people intentionally or unwillingly get involved in the conspiracy motivated by a great variety of unclear and possibly conflicting intentions. This significant increase in the number of participants is promptly followed by another assassination attempt that nearly misses its target. In the ensuing chaos where fanatical competitors become momentarily trusted allies, practically all the participants lose their bearings driven only by the urge to prevail when the fog is finally dispersed. Only the hideous murderer knows exactly what must be done, because his or her aims are the most clearly defined. P.S. Garbol

Book A Sultanate that Endures

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Qaboos bin Sa'id, Sultan of Oman from 1970 until his death in 2020, marked Omani history. He belonged to that very small circle of leaders who solemnized their time in power, transforming the Sultanate by empowering generations of citizens to lead constructive and fulfilling lives. Joseph Kéchichian provides a full assessment of the fourteenth Al Sa'id dynasty sovereign, setting out his vision for what was then a relatively isolated nation, championing the necessity for alliances, investing in people as well as the land, and founding key institutions that evolved over five decades. These achievements took time to materialize as Qaboos preserved Al Sa'id rule, governed wisely, avoided internal and external political entanglements, and passed the torch to his successor Haitham bin Tariq, who validated Al Sa'id authority upon becoming Sultan. A Sultanate that Endures is a companion volume to Oman and the World: The Emergence of an Independent Foreign Policy (RAND, 1995). It highlights Omani history, with a particular focus on the religious creed Ibadhiyyah that embraces tolerance and prevents injustice. The transition from a theocracy to a monarchy that established dynastic rule is discussed in the context of the Sultanate's millennial history, affirming its rulers' legitimacy and citizen acceptance. The author evaluates how Ibadhiyyah and its traditions formed the gist of the Sultanate's foreign policies, concentrating on ties with predominantly Muslim-inhabited countries, engagement with the African Continent, its links with the Arab Gulf region, and appraising Omani diplomacy with key Asian and Western countries. The study closes with a preliminary analysis of the transition to Sultan Haitham, evaluates his primary appointments, and reviews his declared priorities for the nation. Future domestic and foreign policy challenges that may confront Omanis concludes the volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminism's Empire investigates the complex relationships between imperialisms and feminisms in the late nineteenth century and demonstrates the challenge of conceptualizing "pro-imperialist" and "anti-imperialist" as binary positions. By intellectually and spatially tracing the era's first French feminists' engagement with empire, Carolyn J. Eichner explores how feminists opposed—yet employed—approaches to empire in writing, speaking, and publishing. In differing ways, they ultimately tied forms of imperialism to gender liberation. Among the era's first anti-imperialists, French feminists were enmeshed in the hierarchies and epistemologies of empire. They likened their gender-based marginalization to imperialist oppressions. Imperialism and colonialism's gendered and sexualized racial hierarchies established categories of inclusion and exclusion that rested in both universalism and ideas of "nature" that presented colonized people with theoretical, yet impossible, paths to integration. Feminists faced similar barriers to full incorporation due to the gendered contradictions inherent in universalism. The system presumed citizenship to be male and thus positioned women as outsiders. Feminism's Empire connects this critical struggle to hierarchical power shifts in racial and national status that created uneasy linkages between French feminists and imperial authorities.

Book Fall of the Sultanate

Download or read book Fall of the Sultanate written by Ryan Gingeras and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of the Ottoman Empire was by no means a singular event. After six hundred years of ruling over the peoples of North Africa, the Balkans and Middle East, the death throes of sultanate encompassed a series of wars, insurrections, and revolutions spanning the early twentieth century. This volume encompasses a full accounting of the political, economic, social, and international forces that brought about the passing of the Ottoman state. In surveying the many tragedies that transpired in the years between 1908 and 1922, Fall of the Sultanate explores the causes that eventuallyled so many to view the legacy of the Ottomans with loathing and resentment. The volume provides a retelling of this critical history as seen through the eyes of those who lived through the Ottoman collapse. Drawing upon a large gamut of sources in multiple languages, Ryan Gingeras strikes a critical balance in presenting and interpreting the most impactful experiences thatshaped the lives of the empire's last generation. The story presented here takes into account the perspectives of the empire's diverse population as well as the leaders who piloted the state to its end. In surveying the personal, communal and national struggles that defined Italy's invasion ofLibya, the Balkan War, the Great War, and the Turkish War of Independence, Fall of the Sultanate presents readers with a fresh and comprehensive exposition of how and why Ottoman imperial rule ended in bloodshed and disillusionment.

Book Empire of Difference

Download or read book Empire of Difference written by Karen Barkey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-06-23 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comparative study of imperial organization and longevity that assesses Ottoman successes as well as failures against those of other empires with similar characteristics. Barkey examines the Ottoman Empire's social organization and mechanisms of rule at key moments of its history, emergence, imperial institutionalization, remodeling, and transition to nation-state, revealing how the empire managed these moments, adapted, and averted crises and what changes made it transform dramatically. The flexible techniques by which the Ottomans maintained their legitimacy, the cooperation of their diverse elites both at the center and in the provinces, as well as their control over economic and human resources were responsible for the longevity of this particular 'negotiated empire'. Her analysis illuminates topics that include imperial governance, imperial institutions, imperial diversity and multiculturalism, the manner in which dissent is handled and/or internalized, and the nature of state society negotiations.

Book The Ottoman Empire and the World Around it

Download or read book The Ottoman Empire and the World Around it written by Suraiya Faroqhi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2004-11-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Islamic law the world was made up of the 'House of Islam' and the 'House of War' with the Ottoman Sultan - successor to the early Caliphs - as supreme ruler of the Islamic world. However, in this ground-breaking study of the Ottoman Empire in the early modern period, Suraiya Faroqhi demonstrates that there was no 'iron curtain' between the Ottoman and 'other' worlds but rather a long-established network of connections - diplomatic, trading and financial., cultural and religious. These extended beyond regional contacts to the empires of Asia and the burgeoning 'modern' states of Europe - England, France, the Netherlands and Venice. Of course, military conflict was a constant factor in these relationships, but the overriding reality was 'one world' and contact between cultured and pragmatic elites - even 'gentlemen travelling for pleasure' - as well as pilgrimage and close artistic contact with the European Renaissance. Faroqhi's book is based on a huge study of original and early modern sources, including diplomatic records, travel and geographical writing, as well as personal accounts. Its breadth and originality will make it essential reading for historians of Europe and the Middle East.

Book excerpt: "A richly intelligent and charming spellbinder."—Kirkus Review A NOVEL OF NAPOLEONIC EGYPT The year is 1799, a time of dreams and a time of conquest, a time of discovery and a time of greed. Fresh from his triumphs in Italy, where he plundered Rome's treasures and filled the Louvre with the spoils of war, Napoleon has crossed the Mediterranean Sea dreaming of new worlds to conquer. His journey takes him to Cairo, the seat of an ancient empire—and the center of the Corsican conqueror's hopes for new glory. Marguerite Verdier is an illustrator attached to the contingent of more than 140 scholars accompanying Napoleon on his expedition. She views the trip as a way of forgetting the charming philanderer of a husband she has left behind. From Scotland, Lord Elgin, the new British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, also sets sail for Egypt. What these travelers share is the desire for a new beginning—and a legendary treasure lost for thousands of years. The treasure is called The Woman Carried Away. Swathed in ancient myth and mystery, she is the stuff that dreams are made of. Rumored to have been stolen from a pharaoh's tomb, she could be Napoleon's grandest conquest—and he will use all the weapons at his command to possess her. To Marguerite, she is a tragic figure. Given to Cleopatra by Mark Antony, the Woman represents the sorrow and unrealized dreams of all women. For Elgin, she is an obsession that will not die. A primitive and elusive artifact, the Woman is history's most coveted prize—and he wants to be the man to restore her to civilization. But they are not the only ones who seek the treasure. Tallyrand, France's most powerful statesman, covets her, as does the wily Sultan of the crumbling Ottoman Empire. Yet she is a prize that does not come without a price: Said to confer unusual and mystical powers on anyone who owns her, The Woman Carried Away also carries a curse that brings tragedy and destruction to all who come within her orbit. As the search begins for the 3,000-year-old stela, Napoleon fears that his power is dangerously slipping. And Marguerite's own fate hangs in the balance when she is accused of plotting his murder. Even an unlikely alliance with her estranged husband Michel, now the French envoy to Cairo, may not be able to save Marguerite from the guillotine. Epic in scope, played out on a grand, lavish scale, DREAMS OF EMPIRE also surges with intimate human drama. Weaving her way between the time of the pharaohs and the time of Napoleon, Jeanne Mackin gives us a richly imagined story of pride, love, and obsession...a stunning portrait of a defeated pharaoh and a doomed conqueror; of an empire buried in the sands of time; and of an indomitable woman who will settle for nothing less than all life has to offer—and everything her heart desires.
