Br last Rowland's troubles were over, and the sale of his valuable properties made him a millionaire. He was yet but a young man; and with all his business cares and worries suddenly lifted from his shoulders, he felt a strong and a strange yearning to see Llangwenllian once more. It matters not how far a Welshman may wander from his native land, there comes to him sooner or later in life a longing to visit the haunts of his youth. It was not an easy task to part from friends in Old Virginia, and it was rendered still more difficult by the sincere sorrow of the large army of his faithful employes, who deeply regretted to lose such an excellent employer. Gladys shed tears of regret as they bade goodby to Virginia, but was consoled in her grief by the thought that she was to behold dear old Llangwenllian once again, to which place her beloved Rowland would return as a conquering hero. On arriving in New York Rowland called upon his old friend the Rev. Mr. Foulkes, and was informed that the marriage of Miss Foulkes and Taliesin Richards would take place in the course of a few days. Both Rowland and Gladys entered into the wedding arrangements with enthusiasm and were quickly in sole charge of the details of the happy event. There are many still living in the metropolis who remember the amazement of some of the older people at the lavish expenditure in connection with the ceremony, The little Welsh church was converted into a beautiful bower of fragrant roses. The decorations were elaborate, and entirely changed the appearance of the little House of God. After the ceremony a sumptuous wedding dinner was served in one of the fashionable hotels, which most of the guests had hitherto seen only from the outside....

This book was released on 2012-02-09 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1 of 2. ‘The Old Army' is devoted to the regiment's doings before the Great War. It begins with the regiment’s origins as the 100th Prince Regent’s County of Dublin Regiment of Foot, which was raised to fight in the War of 1812-14 against the young United States. Becoming the 100thn Royal Canadian regiment, the unit was stationed in Montreal and Quebec, and then brought to Britain where ity trained at Aldershot and Shorrncliffe before being stationed in Malta and Gibraltar, then India and ireland. It saw service during the Indian Mutiny at the storming of Jhansi, and continued on colonial service in Aden, the Mediterranean, India and Ireland - as well as its native Canada and the West Indies - for the rest of the 19th century. This volume is accompanied by four maps and four illustrations. Prior to its disbanding in 1922, the regiment was stationed in the occupied Rhineland, in India and was on peace-keeping duties in Silesia, disputed betweeen Germany and Poland. This is a meaty history, which will interest anyone curious about Canada’s colonial regiments, and their role in the Great War. Both volumes come with an index.

Book Black Skin Blue Books

Download or read book Black Skin Blue Books written by Daniel G. Williams and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2012-09-15 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This wide ranging book draws on literary, historical, visual and musical sources to open up new avenues of research in Welsh and African American studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an exploration of her country home in Wales, acclaimed travel writer Jan Morris discovers the heart of her fascinating country and what it means to be Welsh. Trefan Morys, Morris's home between the sea and mountains of the remote northwest corner of Wales, is the 18th-century stable block of her former family house nearby. Surrounding it are the fields and outbuildings, the mud, sheep, and cattle of a working Welsh farm. She regards this modest building not only as a reflection of herself and her life, but also as epitomizing the small and complex country of Wales, which has defied the world for centuries to preserve its own identity. Morris brilliantly meditates on the beams and stone walls of the house, its jumbled contents, its sounds and smells, its memories and inhabitants, and finally discovers the profoundest meanings of Welshness.
