Book excerpt: A haunting, virtuosic debut novel about two young men who fall in love during World War I • “Dazzling and wrenching, witty and wildly romantic, with echoes of Brideshead Revisited and Atonement.” —Lev Grossman, bestselling author of The Magicians It’s 1914, and World War I is ceaselessly churning through thousands of young men on both sides of the fight. The violence of the front feels far away to Henry Gaunt, Sidney Ellwood and the rest of their classmates, safely ensconced in their idyllic boarding school in the English countryside. News of the heroic deaths of their friends only makes the war more exciting. Gaunt, half German, is busy fighting his own private battle—an all-consuming infatuation with his best friend, the glamorous, charming Ellwood—without a clue that Ellwood is pining for him in return. When Gaunt's family asks him to enlist to forestall the anti-German sentiment they face, Gaunt does so immediately, relieved to escape his overwhelming feelings for Ellwood. To Gaunt's horror, Ellwood rushes to join him at the front, and the rest of their classmates soon follow. Now death surrounds them in all its grim reality, often inches away, and no one knows who will be next. An epic tale of both the devastating tragedies of war and the forbidden romance that blooms in its grip, In Memoriam is a breathtaking debut.

Download or read book Hell Itself written by Chris Mackowski and published by Savas Beatie. This book was released on 2016-05-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Civil War historian recounts the first battle between Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee—a bloody and horrifying conflict in the Wilderness of Virginia. Known simply as the Wilderness, soldiers called the seventy square miles of dense Virginian forest one of the “waste places of nature” and “a region of gloom.” Yet here, in the spring of 1864, the Civil War escalated to a new level of horror. Ulysses S. Grant, commanding all Federal armies, opened the Overland Campaign with a vow to never turn back. Robert E. Lee, commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, moved into the Wilderness to block Grant’s advance. Thick underbrush made for difficult movement and low visibility. And these challenges were terrifyingly compounded by the outbreak of fires that burned casualties and left both sided blinded in a sea of smoke. Driven by desperation, duty, confusion, and fire, soldiers on both sides marveled that anyone might make it out alive. “This, viewed as a battleground, was simply infernal,” a Union soldier later said. Another called it “Hell itself.”

Book Me Mom and World War II

Download or read book Me Mom and World War II written by Albert F. Pishioneri and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-04 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mr. Pishioneri weaves a great story that brings you through the times when love of family and love of country meant the world to the people of America." Hanging beneath a B-24 Liberator in flight, in 40 to 60 degree weather, bringing his own oxygen and heat with him in this hostile environment; a moving target for enemy fighters, gives one a unique perspective from which to ponder who and what it's all about. The author, a veteran of 35 bombing missions over occupied Europe during World War II, recalls his experiences illuminated by the insight of a Bachelor of Science in American History and 37 1/2 years of teaching Social Studies. A veteran storyteller and talented artist, he weaves his story by chronicling the historical events and personal experiences of his service life between the actual letters he wrote home that were preserved for him by his mother. In Me, Mom and World War II, the reader steps back in time to experience life as the middle child of a large Italian-American family growing up in a small steel town in Western Pennsylvania. The loss of their father, and living through The Great Depression followed by "the emergency" brought on by the bombing of Pearl Harbor forged within them a strength and courage that held them together.

Book Collett Leventhorpe the English Confederate

Download or read book Collett Leventhorpe the English Confederate written by J. Timothy Cole and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-08-23 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of Collett Leventhorpe (1815-1889), an Englishman and former captain in the 14th Regiment of Foot. Leventhorpe came to North Carolina about 1843, settled there, and later served the Confederacy as a colonel in the 34th and 11th N.C. and brigadier general commanding the Home Guard in eastern North Carolina. Though he trained as a physician at the College of Charleston in the late 1840s, he never practiced and was a restless man, endlessly in search of fortune--before the war in the gold fields of North Carolina and Georgia, and after it in the pursuit of lost estates, art treasures and inventions. But he excelled first and foremost as a Confederate soldier. As a field commander he was never defeated in battle, and his record was marred only by his own rejection of a much deserved but very late promotion to CSA brigadier. He lies buried in the beautiful Happy Valley section of Caldwell County.

How after a long uphill struggle to get help and recognition, finding every cloud has a silver lining when Nicky is diagnosed as bordering on genius. She later goes on to discuss his bizarre behaviour, his humour and eccentricities. Digging deeper into the family for a possible genetic/hereditary link, Georgie's humourous look at her colourful family and friends, not to mention thieving ex-husbands, cheating boyfriends, no-one is excluded. Even Ellwood Blues the dog that ran off with her Xmas turkey and disgraced himself. Told in Georgie's northern gritty humour, this is a refreshingly honest account of her life so far, and the rollercoaster of emotion she'd found herself on.
