Download or read book Dear Jelly Family Letters from the First World War written by Sarah Ridley and published by Franklin Watts. This book was released on 2014-01-23 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The moving story of two brothers who fought in the First World War through the real letters, complete with hand-drawn cartoons, they sent to their sisters. Like so many families across the world, the Semple family were split apart by the First World War. While William and Robert were fighting the Germans in France, their younger sisters, Mabel and Jelly (Eileen), had to carry on with school back in England. To keep in touch, they wrote letters. The sisters treasured these letters, which gave snapshots of their brothers' lives as soldiers. Many of the letters included cartoon illustrations to amuse the sisters. The book presents these letters with their illustrations. After each letter the author has written a short commentary, drawing out the facts about the war that can be taken from it. Altogether the book is a powerful and moving record of one family's experience of the First World War and a moving read for readers aged nine and up. A powerful, moving record of one family's first-hand experience of the First World War. - Education Today

Book excerpt: Based on his parents’ experiences as homesteaders, the author chronicles the interwoven lives of three primary characters surrounded by a rich assortment of friends and family members. Their hardships and tragedies are fodder for outrageous, embellished tales. This book is written for the thousands of descendants of homesteaders who have heard their ancestors’ tales and would like to read more. It is also for those who, having lived during most of the twentieth century, are thirsting for a book that recognizes their commonplace accomplishments. Humor and hilarity intermingle with pain and poignancy to capture and hold the reader’s interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once, there was a colony of ants who worked very hard to make an anthill. One day, it rained heavily, and the rainwater entered the anthill. The ants were hopeless and gave up on what they thought was their destiny approaching them. One of the ants looked out of the anthill and noticed a giant tree adjoining the top of the anthill. He called to the other ants to follow him, but they refused. The ant alone crawled up the tree trunk all the way to a leaf. It bit on the leaf, and the leaf lightly floated down to the ground, safely bringing the ant down as well. The clever ant looked back at the ruined anthill and wished that his friends had not given up so soon. This month's iNTELLYJELLY edition is designed to have our children learn the very same fundamental, as Sir Dhirubhai Ambani has put it, 'I am deaf to the word NO.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strangest detective story in the history of music – inspired by a true incident. A world spiralling towards war. A composer descending into madness. And a devoted woman struggling to keep her faith in art and love against all the odds. 1933. Dabbling in the fashionable “Glass Game” – a Ouija board – the famous Hungarian violinist Jelly d’Arányi, one-time muse to composers such as Bartók, Ravel and Elgar, encounters a startling dilemma. A message arrives ostensibly from the spirit of the composer Robert Schumann, begging her to find and perform his long-suppressed violin concerto. She tries to ignore it, wanting to concentrate instead on charity concerts. But against the background of the 1930s depression in London and the rise of the Nazis in Germany, a struggle ensues as the “spirit messengers” do not want her to forget. The concerto turns out to be real, embargoed by Schumann’s family for fear that it betrayed his mental disintegration: it was his last full-scale work, written just before he suffered a nervous breakdown after which he spent the rest of his life in a mental hospital. It shares a theme with his Geistervariationen (Ghost Variations) for piano, a melody he believed had been dictated to him by the spirits of composers beyond the grave. As rumours of its existence spread from London to Berlin, where the manuscript is held, Jelly embarks on an increasingly complex quest to find the concerto. When the Third Reich’s administration decides to unearth the work for reasons of its own, a race to perform it begins. Though aided and abetted by a team of larger-than-life personalities – including her sister Adila Fachiri, the pianist Myra Hess, and a young music publisher who falls in love with her – Jelly finds herself confronting forces that threaten her own state of mind. Saving the concerto comes to mean saving herself. In the ensuing psychodrama, the heroine, the concerto and the pre-war world stand on the brink, reaching together for one more chance of glory.

Book excerpt: Ruth was always claiming to have sacrificed herself. She didn't matter. No one must consider her. She hadn't married. She gave her life up willingly to her dear brother. If he trod on her sometimes, she only liked to feel that he was free to wing his way to fame. And all that sort of stuff ... when all the while, she never did a single thing he wanted, but in the most selfish way made everything as hard as it could be for his work, when she herself was doing nothing! What a fuss if he was half an hour or so late for their lonely meal! How could it matter? He was in the middle of a paragraph, sometimes: and what did she do after dinner, anyhow? Nothing but play Patience, while he went back to work! How could it make any difference at what hour she dined?
