Book Dear Dordo The World War II Letters of Dorothy and John D MacDonald

Download or read book Dear Dordo The World War II Letters of Dorothy and John D MacDonald written by Florence M. Turcotte and published by Peppertree Press. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John D. MacDonald was a prolific writer, authoring 78 books that have sold more than 70 million copies. Many of his novels published in the 1950's were set in Florida, as were several of his 450 short stories and the well-known Travis McGee series. Dear Dordo: The World War II letters of Dorothy and John D. MacDonald presents a collection of 175 letters that were exchanged between John and his wife Dorothy (known as "Dordo") between May 1943 and June 1945. These letters provide a fascinating and honest account of life during World War II from a husband in the U.S. Army and a wife on the home front. Through John and Dorothy's correspondence, readers will learn about John's experiences in the U.S. Army (based first in India, and then, as a commander of an OSS unit, in Ceylon) and Dorothy's experiences as a supportive spouse back home in Utica, New York. The letters animate how John and Dorothy dealt with the personal concerns and themes of their lives, separately and as a married couple, and demonstrate the difficulties of wartime separation of husbands and wives. The letters also tell the story of a wife's efforts on behalf of her husband abroad that launched a heralded literary career that established a new twist on the hard-boiled detective novel genre of American writing. The letters compiled in Dear Dordo are framed by a preface, an introduction, editorial notes, and a glossary. These materials provide unique and essential context to the content of the letters. Fans and scholars alike will find much to consider and analyze in this collection. Compiled and Edited by: Florence M. Turcotte, Cal Branche, Nola Branche

Wolfe of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. "Don't worry at all about me. This is even better than I thought it would be." Kenneth Dale Wolfe of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania was twenty-four years old in 1941 when he volunteered for the Army Air Force. Working hard, he attained the rank of Second Lieutenant before shipping off to an air base in Greenville, South Carolina. It was a much simpler time, complicated by a vicious and costly war. Anxious American families everywhere gathered around their radios to listen to "Songs by Sinatra" and to hear news from the front. And as Kenneth learned the ins and outs of being an ordnance officer, our country, collaborating with other nations, was planning something big. Immerse yourself in Ken's journey via letters home to his mother, running from January 1943 to March of 1944, when he was shipped off to England to help prepare for D-Day.

Book excerpt: One of the most beloved American thriller writers of the twentieth century kicks off a rip-roaring career with his exhilarating first novel, a hard-boiled classic full of twists and turns, good intentions and bad coincidences, the stench of corruption and the pursuit of justice at any cost. Introduction by Dean Koontz Ex-cop Cliff Bartells might be the last honest man in Florence City, Florida. After quitting the force over a crisis of conscience, he takes a job at an insurance company buying back stolen jewelry. Cliff is focused on keeping the bottom line down and staying out of the spotlight. But when an affluent tourist from Boston is murdered over a hefty collection of jewelry, Cliff finds himself wrapped up in a case that’s making national headlines. With the victim’s beautiful niece, Melody Chance, determined to help retrieve the goods, suddenly Cliff has the partner he never knew he wanted. Now all they need is a suspect: someone capable of cold-blooded murder in the name of profit. And that could mean anyone in this crooked town. Praise for John D. MacDonald “As a young writer, all I ever wanted was to touch readers as powerfully as John D. MacDonald touched me.”—Dean Koontz “To diggers a thousand years from now, the works of John D. MacDonald would be a treasure on the order of the tomb of Tutankhamen.”—Kurt Vonnegut “John D. MacDonald was a writer way ahead of his time.”—John Saul

Travis McGee is a self-described beach bum who won his houseboat in a card game. He’s also a knight-errant who’s wary of credit cards, retirement benefits, political parties, mortgages, and television. MacDonald was the great entertainer of our age, and a mesmerizing storyteller.”—Stephen King McGee isn’t particularly strapped for cash, but how can anyone say no to Cathy, a sweet backwoods girl who’s been tortured repeatedly by her manipulative ex-boyfriend Junior Allen? What Travis isn’t anticipating is just how many women Junior has torn apart and left in his wake. Enter Junior’s latest victim, Lois Atkinson. Frail and broken, Lois can barely get out of bed when Travis finds her, let alone keep herself alive. But Travis turns into Mother McGee, giving Lois new life as he looks for the ruthless man who steals women’s spirits and livelihoods. But he can’t guess how violent his quest is soon to become. He’ll learn the hard way that there must be casualties in this game of cat and mouse. Features a new Introduction by Lee Child

MacDonald touched me.”—Dean Koontz McGee is a heartbeat away from crisis. He’s getting older, Lady Jillian Brent-Archer is trying to make him settle down, and he’s just been shot without fair warning. Nervous that he’s losing his touch, McGee decides to get Harry off his case and prove he’s still in top form all in one fell swoop. McGee’s search for Mary takes him to Grenada, where he’s soon tangling with con artists and terrifying French killers, not to mention a slew of mixed motives. No longer wallowing in self-pity, McGee has more pressing concerns—like saving his own skin. Features a new Introduction by Lee Child

Lucky for Hirsh, he’s got a friend in Travis McGee. Soon McGee is hot on the trail of the missing collection—not to mention hot for a voluptuous stamp expert by the name of Mary Alice. Only it’s not McGee’s heart that’s in danger. He soon realizes that he’s run afoul of a vicious syndicate, and neither rain, nor sleet, nor gloom of night will keep them from collecting McGee’s head.
