A thousand years before the birth of Vlad Taltos, the Dragaeran Empire is a hotbed of intrigue, sorcery, intrigue, wild adventure, and intrigue. For those who would be heroes, it is a delightful time to be alive—and an easy place to die. Book The Captor s Image

Download or read book The Captor s Image written by Basil Dufallo and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-24 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An influential view of ecphrasis--the literary description of art objects--chiefly treats it as a way for authors to write about their own texts without appearing to do so, and even insist upon the aesthetic dominance of the literary text over the visual image. However, when considering its use in ancient Roman literature, this interpretation proves insufficient. The Captor's Image argues for the need to see Roman ecphrasis, with its prevalent focus on Hellenic images, as a site of subtle, ongoing competition between Greek and Roman cultures. Through close readings of ecphrases in a wide range of Latin authors--from Plautus, Catullus, and Horace to Vergil, Ovid, and Martial, among others--Dufallo contends that Roman ecphrasis reveals an ambivalent receptivity to Greek culture, an attitude with implications for the shifting notions of Roman identity in the Republican and Imperial periods. Individual chapters explore how the simple assumption of a self-asserting ecphrastic text is called into question by comic performance, intentionally inconsistent narrative, satire, Greek religious iconography, the contradictory associations of epic imagery, and the author's subjection to a patron. Visual material such as wall painting, statuary, and drinkware vividly contextualizes the discussion. As the first book-length treatment of artistic ecphrasis at Rome, The Captor's Image resituates a major literary trope within its hybrid cultural context while advancing the idea of ecphrasis as a cultural practice through which the Romans sought to redefine their identity with, and against, Greekness.

Book excerpt: What is the distinction between reality and fiction? Sanity and insanity? These are the questions that twin siblings Jasmin and Herby find themselves attempting to answer. Jasmin writes in an attempt to understand what is true. She struggles to maintain separation between her scrambled memories and her grief stricken reality without losing herself in the process. Herby tries to answer most of the unanswered questions that Jasmin's letters raise. He also battles between his sanity and insanity in his efforts to gain the love and affection of his beloved sister. He will eliminate any boundaries that come between him and what his heart longs for regardless of the consequences. However, what ails the two most is what has brought them to the mental torment they suffer. Their less than normal childhoods certainly did not foster reputable adulthoods. What confines Jasmin to her white prison? Who are her daily noonday "friends" that visit her at the cusp of her reality leaning over her imagination? What motivates Herby to want to destroy all those that stand in his way of pursuing his only love? Will he accomplish all that his soul desperately tries to fulfill? With all these unanswered questions and more, it is no wonder why the two bear the mental torment to which they are submitted.

Fern seeks refuge from her mother’s pill-popping and boyfriends via Soul Train; Gwin finds salvation in the music of Prince much to her congregation’s dismay and Jesenia, miles ahead of her classmates at her gifted and talented high school, is a brainy and precocious enigma. None of this matters to Boss Man, the monster who abducts them and holds them captive in a dilapidated house in Queens. On the night they are finally rescued, throngs line the block gawking and claiming ignorance. Among them is lifetime resident Miss Metropolitan, advice columnist for the local weekly, but how could anyone who fancies herself a “newspaperwoman” have missed a horror story unfolding right across the street? And why is it that only two of the three girls—now women—were found? The mystery haunts the two remaining “victim girls” who are subjected to the further trauma of becoming symbols as they continuously adapt to their present and their unrelenting past. Like Colson Whitehead's The Nickel Boys, Ferrell’s Dear Miss Metropolitan gives voice to characters surviving unimaginable tragedy. The story is inventively revealed before, during, and after the ordeal in this singular and urgent novel.
