He hoped to turn that New Haven school from a local medical training center to the national and international reasearch institution it has become. He simplified the educational program, certain that graduate students, freed from compulsory attendance at lectures, would learn for themselves. â??Winter,â?? as he liked to be called, strengthen the requirement that students carry out a research project before graduation. He established the nursing school, the psychiatry department, supported the epidemiology and public health activities. Most importsaant, he brough about a full-time salaried academic faculty. But his real love, his enthusiasm, lay in humanizing the medical curriculum , in the 1920s beginning to verge on the purely scientific. In his short-lived Institute for Human Relations, he hoped to bring Yale Law and Divinity schools down to the medical area, and to encourage a far more humanuistic approach to medical trainiung. If he had succeeded, medical students would become science-based but fully aware of the psychological and social origin of much of their complaints. But Winternitz was a Jew in a Christian society. , In order to fulfill his ambitions and remain at his post,, he yielded to the prejudices of the time in limiting the admission of Jews, Italian Catholics, and Afr0- Americans to the medical school.. For that he has been vilified, and only in this 1910 200th Anniversary celebration, are his contributions finally getting the recognition they have long deserved. Here we present a bio-memoir of this remarkable man.

The essays in this volume explore the consequences of the interaction between medicine and social science by evaluating its significance for the moral and aterial role of medicine in modern societies. Some of the essays examine the ideas of both clinicians and social scientists who believed that highly technologized medicine could be made more humanistic by understanding the social relations of health and illness. Other authors interrogate the critical assault which social science has made upon medicine as a system of knowledge, organisation and power. The volume discusses, therefore, the relationship between social-scientific knowledge both in and of medicine in the twentieth century. Collectively the essays illustrate that the respective power of biology and culture in determining human behaviour and social transition continues to be an unresolved paradox.

This compendium clearly demonstrates the Czech and Slovak immigrants, including Bohemian Jews, have brought to the New World, in these areas, their talents, their ingenuity, the technical skills, their scientific knowhow, as well as their humanistic and spiritual upbringing, reflecting upon the richness of their culture and traditions, developed throughout centuries in their ancestral home. This accounts for their remarkable success and achievements of theses settlers in the New World, transcending through their descendants, as this publication demonstrates. The monograph has been organized into sections by subject areas, i.e., Medicine, Allied Health Sciences and Social Services, Agricultural and Food Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences and Engineering. Each individual entry is usually accompanied with literature, and additional biographical sources for readers who wish to pursue a deeper study. The selection of individuals has been strictly based on geographical vantage, without regards to their native language or ethnical background. Some of the entries may surprise you, because their Czech or Slovak ancestry has not been generally known. What is conspicuous is a large percentage of listed individuals being Jewish, which is a reflection of high-level of education and intellect of Bohemian Jews. A prodigious number of accomplished women in this study is also astounding, considering that, in the 19th century, they rarely had careers and most professions refused entry to them.

The modern fields of psychiatry and mental health care are located at the intersection of these spheres. There emerged concepts, practices, and institutions that marked responses to challenges posed by urbanization, industrialization, and the formation of the nation-state. These psychiatric responses were locally distinctive, and yet at the same time established influential models with an international impact. In spite of rising nationalism in Europe, the intellectual, institutional, and material resources that emerged in the various local and national contexts were rapidly observed to have had an impact beyond any national boundaries. In numerous ways, innovations were adopted and refashioned for the needs and purposes of new national and local systems.
