The technique uses the generally dissimilar linear doppler frequency modulated signals from moving targets and stationary ground clutter. A matched filter processor is defined and its resolution and ambiguity properties studied as function processor parameters. Sub-clutter visibility of the processor is then determined. Two techniques for digitally implementing the processor are discussed and the computational efficiencies briefly analyzed. Finally, target angular position can be determined using phase monopulse. It is then shown that target velocity--both ground speed and target heading--can be determined from radar observables. (Author).

While many early studies were concerned with the relative importance of vision and kinesthesis and/or the time it takes to use visual information, recent theoretical and technical developments have stimulated scientists to ask questions about how different sources of visual information contribute to motor control in different contexts. In this volume, articles are presented that provide a broad coverage of the current research and theory on vision and human motor learning and control. Many of the contributors are colleagues that have met over the years at the meetings and conferences concerned with human movement. They represent a wide range of affiliation and background including kinesiology, physical education, neurophysiology, cognitive psychology and neuropsychology. Thus the topic of vision and motor control is addressed from a number of different perspectives. In general, each author sets an empirical and theoretical framework for their topic, and then discusses current work from their own laboratory, and how it fits into the larger context. A synthesis chapter at the end of the volume identifies commonalities in the work and suggests directions for future experimentation.

It then develops the theory of optimal search for a moving target, providing algorithms for computing optimal plans and examples of their use. Next it develops methods for computing optimal search plans involving multiple targets and multiple searchers with realistic operational constraints on search movement. These results assume that the target does not react to the search. In the final chapter there is a brief overview of mostly military problems where the target tries to avoid being found as well as rescue or rendezvous problems where the target and the searcher cooperate. Larry Stone wrote his definitive book Theory of Optimal Search in 1975, dealing almost exclusively with the stationary target search problem. Since then the theory has advanced to encompass search for targets that move even as the search proceeds, and computers have developed sufficient capability to employ the improved theory. In this book, Stone joins Royset and Washburn to document and explain this expanded theory of search. The problem of how to search for moving targets arises every day in military, rescue, law enforcement, and border patrol operations.

Book excerpt: Phased array antennas and doppler signal processors designed to complement each other have been successfully used to maximize the signal-to-clutter (S/C) performance of AMTI radars. The optimum receiving antennas described in this paper allow for nonuniformities created in the ground-clutter doppler spectrum by the transmitting antenna and processing of the received doppler signal; the optimum signal-to-clutter digital processors allow for clutter spectra shaped by the combined effects of the transmitting-receiving antennas. The emphasis has been placed on producing antenna-processor designs that have complementary pass and reject bands. The mathematical techniques used in these designs maximize the ratio between the target signal and the clutter-plus-noise, expressed as a ratio of quadratic forms. The solution for the optimum design, which depends principally on the inversion of a single matrix rather than on any recursive technique, is obtained in closed form.
