Book excerpt: "Today, the Hispanic/Latino population is the largest minority group in the United States (Ennis, Rios-Vargas, and Ramirez, 2011). They are also estimated to compose 24.5 percent of the entire deaf/hard of hearing school age population in the United State (Gallaudet Research Institute, 2003). Gerner de Garcia, Morocco, and Aguilar (2005) state, Hispanic/Latino deaf students "cannot afford to be left behind, nor can educators of deaf afford to ignore such a large subset of the deaf school-aged population" (p.4). A study developed by Galloza-Carrero (2015) examined a group of 28 Hispanic/Latino deaf children and 13 Not Hispanic/Latino deaf children's language, attention, and academic skills. The results of the study suggested that a trilingual environment does not negatively impact the intellectual, attentional, or academic skills of these children. When deaf Hispanic/Latino children were compared to Not Hispanic/Latino deaf children, no significant difference was found on language acquisition, attention or pre-academic skills. Nevertheless, in areas related to pre-academic performance, Not Hispanic/Latino deaf children achieved higher scores; in the areas related to language and attention skills, Hispanic/Latino deaf children scored higher. Given these results, it is essential to consider if significant differences will occur at a later point in development. This study evaluated language acquisition and attention of Hispanic/Latino deaf children over a three-year period. The researcher utilized an Exploratory Data Analysis for Longitudinal Data (EDALD) as well as a Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), to examine the following research questions: (1) Do developmental trajectories of language acquisition in Hispanic/Latino deaf children differ when compared with the developmental trajectories of a group of Not Hispanic/Latino deaf children using measures administered over a three-year period? and (2) Do developmental trajectories of attention in Hispanic/Latino deaf children differ when compared with the developmental trajectories of a group of Not Hispanic/Latino deaf children using measures administered over a three-year period? The results obtained indicate that language acquisition and attention skills do not significantly differ by ethnicity for the utilized sample. A key element for language acquisition seems to be language exposure and access. Also, the primary mode of communication or instructional intervention might not create a difference in attention skills. The current study has been able to show that ethnicity is not necessarily a fundamental factor, but most likely, the social implications associated with ethnicity. Limitations and future implications of the current research for the field of Hispanic/Latino deaf are discussed." --Abstract

Book excerpt: This book contains 12 papers contributed by leading scholars in the field of language development, studying variants of the languages which originated on the Iberian peninsula. The contributors examine language development in both typically-developing and language-impaired populations who are learning language in diverse learning conditions, including language contact, as well as monolingual and bilingual Spanish, Catalan, Galician and Euskera. This expansion and diversification of the database for studying language development is important because it creates new opportunities for testing theoretical claims. Our contributors reconsider theoretical claims relating to the purported adult-like nature of young children’s grammars. While some conclude, for example, that children in Mexico possess very adult-like semantic-pragmatic competence in the domain of the pragmatic implicatures associated with existential quantifiers, others conclude that, in particular sociolinguistic registers of Chilean Spanish, children are late to develop adult-like competence in plural marking. Taken together, the contents of the volume illustrate how the linguistic diversity found in the distinct learning conditions in which language develops offers a wealth of opportunities to further our understanding of linguistic and non-linguistic cognitive development.

Book excerpt: A significant number of d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) children and adolescents experience challenges in acquiring a functional level of English language and literacy skills in the United States (and elsewhere). To provide an understanding of this issue, this book explores the theoretical underpinnings and synthesizes major research findings. It also covers critical controversial areas such as the use of assistive hearing devices, language, and literacy assessments, and inclusion. Although the targeted population is children and adolescents who are d/Dhh, contributors found it necessary to apply our understanding of the development of English in other populations of struggling readers and writers such as children with language or literacy disabilities and those for whom English is not the home language. Collectively, this information should assist scholars in conducting further research and enable educators to develop general instructional guidelines and strategies to improve the language and literacy levels of d/Dhh students. It is clear that there is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ concept, but, rather, research and instruction should be differentiated to meet the needs of d/Dhh students. It is our hope that this book stimulates further theorizing and research and, most importantly, offers evidence- and reason-based practices for improving language and literacy abilities of d/Dhh students.

Book excerpt: This longitudinal study examined the role maternal responsiveness had on shaping Spanish and English language development in bilingual two year-old children. Because children who are bilingual language learners are oftentimes coming from low socioeconomic families it is essential that we investigate the ways in which they develop language in order to better serve this population. Maternal responsiveness is one source in which we can examine early language development of young bilingual children. Eight Latino mother-child dyads were observed and assessed at three time points. Each observation was coded for maternal responsive behaviors. Regression and multilevel modeling was used in order to assess which maternal responsive behaviors impacted Spanish and English language outcomes. Results indicated joint topic focus as being overwhelmingly impactful across Times 2 and Times 3 in both languages. Additionally, prohibition was found to be negatively influencing English language outcomes at Times 2 and Times 3. Interestingly, focus shift was found to have a positive impact on English language outcomes at Time 2. Given the findings, this work sheds light on the similarities and differences between cultures and the need for further research surrounding this population.

And change certainly will be the buzzword in the foreseeable future. The rapid growth of information and communication technology as well as progress in educational, psychological, and allied research fields have many scholars questioning aspects of traditional school concepts. For example, should the classroom be "flipped" so that students receive instruction online at home and do "homework" in school? At the same time, inclusive education has changed the traditional landscape of special education and thus of deaf education in many if not all countries, and yet deaf children continued to lag significantly behind hearing peers in academic achievement. As a consequence of technological innovations (e.g., digital hearing aids and early bilateral cochlear implants), the needs of many deaf learners have changed considerably. Parents and professionals, however, are just now coming to recognize that there are cognitive, experiential, and social-emotional differences between deaf and hearing students likely to affect academic outcomes. Understanding such differences and determining ways in which to accommodate them through global cooperation must become a top priority in educating deaf learners. Through the participation of an international, interdisciplinary set of scholars, Educating Deaf Learners takes a broader view of learning and academic achievement than any previous work, considering the whole child.
