Book excerpt: Adrienne Kennedy's plays, which have been said to have transformed the landscape of Black American theatre in the past two decades, are highly experimental. Infused with colliding images of torment and tranquility, violence and peace, horror and beauty, her surrealistic dramas open a window into her life. Her characters are a condensed expression of a theatrical mind that aims to integrate autobiographical, political and aesthetic images into a personal narrative. This book is an extension of Kennedy's plays. It consists of two separate, yet linked, entities, The "Theatre Mystery" (fiction) and "Theatre Journal" (non-fiction) exist as mirror images of one another. Each presents layer upon layer of images rather than progressive action to develop their story, an interior monologue that sees the character as author coming to terms with the life of the author as character.

Book Modern American Drama Playwriting in the 1960s

Download or read book Modern American Drama Playwriting in the 1960s written by Mike Sell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Decades of Modern American Drama series provides a comprehensive survey and study of the theatre produced in each decade from the 1930s to 2009 in eight volumes. Each volume equips readers with a detailed understanding of the context from which work emerged: an introduction considers life in the decade with a focus on domestic life and conditions, social changes, culture, media, technology, industry and political events; while a chapter on the theatre of the decade offers a wide-ranging and thorough survey of theatres, companies, dramatists, new movements and developments in response to the economic and political conditions of the day. The work of the four most prominent playwrights from the decade receives in-depth analysis and re-evaluation by a team of experts, together with commentary on their subsequent work and legacy. A final section brings together original documents such as interviews with the playwrights and with directors, drafts of play scenes, and other previously unpublished material. The major playwrights and their plays to receive in-depth coverage in this volume include: * Edward Albee: The American Dream (1960), Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962), A Delicate Balance (1966) and Tiny Alice (1964 ); * Amiri Baraka: Dutchman (1964), The Slave (1964) and Slaveship (1967); * Adrienne Kennedy: Funnyhouse of a Negro (1964), Cities in Bezique (The Owl Answers and A Beast's Story, 1969), and A Rat's Mass (1967); * Jean-Claude van Itallie: American Hurrah (1966), The Serpent (1968) and War (1963).

Book The Black Theatre Movement in the United States and in South Africa

Download or read book The Black Theatre Movement in the United States and in South Africa written by Olga Barrios and published by Universitat de València. This book was released on 2008 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Twentieth Century British and American Theatre

Download or read book Twentieth Century British and American Theatre written by Christopher Innes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume aims to develop the field of theatre studies by promoting the study of performative elements and thus fostering their consideration in the critical interpretation of dramatic literature. The authors additionally suggest ways of approaching and evaluating the work of individual performers, as well as of directors, designers and producers. It is an archival guide which covers manuscript and ephemera, rather than published texts, and attempts to indicate the potential value of the documentary material listed. This unique reference guide provides descriptions and evaluations of archive manuscript materials and ephemera relating to twentieth-century British and American theatre. Over 100 archives across Europe, North America and Britain were examined in the compilation of this volume. The documents include: unpublished playscripts; state and costume designs; directors' books; prompt books; lighting plots; stage photos; correspondence; theatre programmes. One hundred and seventy five entries are arranged alphabetically and cover playwrights, directors, designers and actors. By its nature, theatre is a collaborative enterprise, a facet which is recognised in the comprehensive cross-referencing of entries. The last twenty years has seen a shift in drama studies from text-based criticism to analysis of performance. The materials covered in this book have therefore become essential to future research in the field.

Book Peculiar Passages

    Book Details:
  • Author : Carol Allen
  • Publisher : Peter Lang
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN : 9780820476193
  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book Peculiar Passages written by Carol Allen and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features African American women playwrights from 1875 to 2000, with an emphasis on the late nineteenth century, a period rarely treated in regard to women's drama. Highlighting the lesser-known Pauline Hopkins, Angelina Weld Grimké, Georgia Douglas Johnson, Eulalie Spence, and May Miller, and the well-known Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Childress, Adrienne Kennedy, and Ntozake Shange, Peculiar Passages argues that these playwrights' efforts define a tradition characterized by quick-change mobility, sensitivity to vernacular forms, and dedication to intertextual dialogue. Situating the plays within a broader context, the book also connects them to minstrelsy, the Passion Play, and the Black Arts Movement.
