Book Epileptic Seizures and Syndromes

Download or read book Epileptic Seizures and Syndromes written by Peter Wolf (M.D.) and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 1994 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects debates and results which have developed since the introduction of an international system of classifications in epileptology. The creation of such a system was initiated, in the sixties, mainly for practical reasons: growing international exchange had revealed that divergence of terminology in epilepsy had become important enough to prove a serious obstacle to sensible discussions. The Bethel-Cleveland symposia, which was at the origin of this book, aim to bring the excellence of advanced inter-disciplinary and controversial workshops to a larger public. The book concentrates on a selection of topics where progress has been made, where controversies are open or where discussion needs to be stimulated.

Book New Antiepileptic Drugs

  • Publisher : Elsevier Publishing Company
  • Release : 1991
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book New Antiepileptic Drugs written by Francesco Pisani and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1991 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pharmacological fight against epilepsy began many centuries ago when Hippocrates discovered that the cause of epilepsy is natural, as opposed to supernatural and, as a consequence, must be treated with a natural remedy. Even though science has significantly progressed since that era, the challenge to find remedies for epilepsy is ever present. The aim of this particular volume is to offer an up-to-date review of the most recent advances in antiepileptic drug development, considered from various viewpoints: (i) general, by taking into account the size of refractory epilepsy and its related problems; (ii) experimental, by exploring the mechanisms of epileptogenesis and the possiblility of influencing it through drugs, and (iii) clinical, by describing the results obtained with compounds currently at an advanced stage of testing.

Book Do Seizures Damage the Brain

Download or read book Do Seizures Damage the Brain written by Thomas Sutula and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 2002 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the consequences, if any, of repeated brief seizures that are the defining feature of epilepsy? A firm answer to this question has been surprisingly elusive for a variety of reasons. Clearly there is a subset of patients who appear to tolerate seizures with relatively limited long-term consequences, and not all patients are destined to progress to intractability with frequent seizures and disability. This variability and individual susceptibility has made it difficult to make statements that fairly apply to the full range of people with epileptic disorders, whose disorders span a broad spectrum from mild with excellent control and few limitations, to severe with multiple daily seizures and pronounced disability that affects employment, educational performance, an personal life. This volume seeks to explore the spectrum of severe to more subtle damage that may be a consequence of seizures. The contributing authors have addressed these questions and related issues using a variety of methods in experimental models and in patients with epilepsy.

Book Seizures and Epilepsy in the Elderly

Download or read book Seizures and Epilepsy in the Elderly written by A. J. Rowan and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 1997 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epileptic seizures in the elderly population occur more frequently that previously thought. Recent epidemiologic data indicate that the incidence of seizures rises sharply after middle age. Seizures occur because of previous stroke or head trauma in addition to a variety of systemic derangements, drugs, drug withdrawal, or acute intracranial disease. The aging process creates particular problems in diagnosis, specific therapy, and long-term management. Prompt diagnosis and therapy are essential. This bookemphasizes the physiologic and pathologic changes associated with aging that have an impact on diagnosis and treatment. It will include epidemiology, clinical diagnosis, imaging and electrophysiologic studies, age-related physiologic changes, pharmacokinetics, drug interactions, current and new antiepileptic drugs, and management.

Book Seizures

  • Author : Norman Delanty
  • Publisher : Humana
  • Release : 2010-11-19
  • ISBN : 9781617372070
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Seizures written by Norman Delanty and published by Humana. This book was released on 2010-11-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seizures are frightening events. They frighten the patients who experience them; they frighten those who witness them; they also frighten many physicians who have to deal with them. Most individuals with seizures present to family physicians or to emergency room physicians. However, despite the fact that seizures are among the most common neurological conditions, most general practitioners, family practice specialists, and intemists do not see large numbers of patients with seizures. Given the apoplectic appearance of generalized tonic clonic convulsions, it is not difficult to understand why they arouse such emotional responses in those that experience them, those that witness them, and those whose care is sought for them. Seizures are symptoms of something wrong with the brain. Many different kinds of perturbations in brain anatomy, chemistry, or physiology can produce seizures. For many individuals, seizures occur in the context of an acute illness and will not recur once that illness is treated. These individuals do not have epilepsy. They have transient disturbances in brain function attributable to systemic medical conditions. It is important to recognize these issues, because, first, the seizure may be the initial, or even only, manifestation of the underlying medical problem and this needs to be recognized.

Book Eyelid Myoclonia with Absences

Download or read book Eyelid Myoclonia with Absences written by John S. Duncan and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 1996 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eyelid myoclonia with absences is a recently described and under-recognised syndrome of idiopathic generalised epilepsy. The diagnosis may be confused with tics, attempts at self induction, and epilepsy syndromes with a better prognosis such as childhood absence epilepsy. This book summarises current knowledge on the topic; covering the underlying anatomy and physiology of the eyelids, the clinical and electro-encephalographic features and differential diagnosis in children and adults, including a discussion on the issue of self-induction of absences. The current state of knowledge on inheritance and genetics of the condition and treatment strategies are considered. Throughout, recent advances in the field are couched in an historical context, making this book a comprehensive source for all those who need to understand this syndrome whether from a research standpoint or the clinical management of affected children and adults. As such it will be of value to neurologists, epileptologists and those involved in the care and treatment of epileptic patients.
