Book excerpt: In this breakneck thriller, the New York Times–bestselling author introduces Mossad agent David Morton—a man as dangerous as the terrorists he hunts. In the aftermath of the 1990-1991 Gulf War, a megalomaniac terrorist holds the world hostage, threatening to poison every major city with a deadly virus. He has the means—a form of anthrax capable of wiping out millions in minutes—and demonstrates its potency by adding a small vial of it to the drinking water in a small South African town, killing all of the inhabitants. With only seven days to meet his demands, the world’s leaders call on David Morton, a brilliant and ruthless Mossad agent. The result is a tense global chase, leading from China to Athens, London, Libya, South Africa, Tel Aviv, and New York, drawing good and evil closer and closer in a battle to the death. Deadly Perfume penetrates the real world of intelligence-gathering to reveal its secret subculture, with its hidden loyalties and agendas. Gordon Thomas has imagined a world so terrifyingly real that it poses the question, Is it imagined at all? “[A] horribly convincing thriller . . . Intelligence agent David Morton deals with the psychodynamics of terrorism, with modern technology at his fingertips and the ears of Western politicians at his command. I was left hoping that we have some real Mortons at our disposal.” —Daily Mail

Book Eastern Luminaries Disclosed to Western Eyes

Download or read book Eastern Luminaries Disclosed to Western Eyes written by Raja Lahiani and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies and evaluates the different translations of the Mu'allaqāt, seven canonical pre-Islamic odes, from Arabic into English and French. First, it introduces the Mu'allaqāt and the chief controversies related to their study in both Eastern and Western scholarship. It then presents the translators of the Mu'allaqāt and their translations and closes with two typologies of the translations and translators presented. A number of criteria for the evaluation of translations of poetry are developed. The book provides a comparative study of the English and French translations of the Mu'allaqāt with a focus on a number of communicative priorities in the source text, based on stylistic devices that require a sound awareness of the culture of pre-Islamic Arabia, the main setting of the Mu'allaqāt. The author assesses the reliability of the criteria of evaluation and the translatability of the Mu'allaqāt as a text that is remote from its translators in time, in place, and with respect to literary tradition.

Book excerpt: The novel DEADLY PARADISE tells about obsessive love, hatred and the power struggle between the wealthy and powerful Blue Creek Condominium president, Mr. Robert Howards, and the simple, but attractive, Russian immigrant caretaker, Nina. The book is set in a first class high-rise building in Pittsburgh, PA. It is the backdrop for the gripping and frantic story of Rob and Nina's relationship. Intertwined, as well, are the stories of the staff and residents who live in the building. The novel explores many human emotions as well as a variety of characters. The adventures in the narrative include: stories of immigrant life, a struggle with cancer, pure love as contrasted with horrible sadistic love, abuse and harassment. The main dramaturgic line is the deep psychological tragedy and sufferings of a tyrannical man, who was a dictator ruling the kingdom of slaves. Rob finds his only true love in a woman from another culture, a different social class and a completely opposite character. But she keeps him at arms length and unconsciously completely ruined his kingdom which everyone hates and scares. Nina doesn't rebel openly against the oppressive atmosphere, but seeks freedom and democracy in her own way, by living and enjoying her life and singing. She continues to be full of love for the whole world. In this way she wins people's affection and undermined Rob's power in the company. The story culminates when Rob shot Nina in the triumphal hour of her victory.

Download or read book Scented Visions written by Christina Bradstreet and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2022-06-29 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smell loomed large in cultural discourse in the late nineteenth century, thanks to the midcentury fear of miasma, the drive for sanitation reform, and the rise in artificial perfumery. Meanwhile, the science of olfaction remained largely mysterious, prompting an impulse to “see smell” and inspiring some artists to picture scent in order to better know and control it. This book recovers the substantive role of the olfactory in Pre-Raphaelite art and Aestheticism. Christina Bradstreet examines the iconography and symbolism of scent in nineteenth-century art and visual culture. Fragrant imagery in the work of John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Simeon Solomon, George Frederic Watts, Edward Burne-Jones, and others set the trend for the preoccupation with scent that informed swaths of British, European, and American art and design. Bradstreet’s rich analyses of paintings, perfume posters, and other works of visual culture demonstrate how artworks mirrored the “period nose” and intersected with the most clamorous debates of the day, including evolution, civilization, race, urban morality, mental health, faith, and the “woman question.” Beautifully illustrated and grounded in current practices in sensory history, Scented Visions presents both fresh readings of major works of art and a deeper understanding of the cultural history of nineteenth-century scent.
