Download or read book Deadlines and Datelines written by Christopher Thomas and published by Quadrant Books. This book was released on 2021-09-10 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher Thomas' driving ambition as a boy was to become a foreign correspondent. Refusing to be held back by a poor secondary modern school education and a single GCE 'O' level, he learned shorthand to get a job as a trainee on the local newspaper. Determination and a good deal of bluffing drove him to the top of his profession, and he went on to work for The Times for 28 years. As a foreign correspondent he saw conflicts and suffering in dozens of countries, but amid the wreckage of ordinary people's lives there was always humanity and heroism, and sometimes even hope. As a long-time foreign correspondent, based in the Middle East for The Times of London he spent a decade in and around India and has valuable insights into the situation in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kashmir and India. Previously author of Faultline Kashmir, published by New Millennium Press and with insights into Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Kashmir, Christopher Thomas has read and researched deeply into the history of the area, and he has reached a number of uncomfortable but undeniable conclusions that are worth pondering as India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Kashmir once again erupts in conflict or potential conflict while contemplating, for the first time in years, the tortuous path to peace. He is bluntly critical of all parties, observing that Pakistan has "shattered its own democracy" in military pursuit in Kashmir and Afghanistan and its guerrillas have "hijacked the people's rebellion" in the name of jihad.

Book A Thousand Deadlines

Download or read book A Thousand Deadlines written by Kevin O’Keefe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an attempt to chronicle and analyse the attitudes of the New York press in connection with the events of the period from 1914 to 1917 relating to American neutrality. It is based primarily on a day to-day study of sixteen daily newspapers in New York City for the period of American non-participation in the First World War. The research involved not only editorial opinion but also news items, feature articles, letters to the editor, book reviews and special commentary. The files of the major New York newspapers of the period naturally constituted the basic sources. In addition to this, use was made of the memoirs, diaries and private papers of editors, publishers and other public figures; the Congressional Record, 1914-1917; Congressional hearings and reports, 1915, 1919, 1936 and 1937; certain British and German materials; books, articles and other secondary sources. The author also drew upon the recollections of New Yorkers active in journalism during the period.

Book excerpt: The definition of ideology continues to occupy scholars across a wide range of disciplines. In this book, Teun A van Dijk sketches a challenging new multidisciplinary framework for theorizing ideology. Contemporary racist discourse is examined to illustrate these ideological relations between cognition, society and discourse.
