Book The Misplaced Love of the Dead

Download or read book The Misplaced Love of the Dead written by G.V. Loewen and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy/Ethics The ‘sacrifice of the intellect’ is today mostly either a convenience or a contrivance. The marketeer assuages the consumer by her own feigned idiocy, the parish pirate invites the listless into his own fraudulent faith. It is exceedingly rare, in my estimation, to discover an authentically latter-day saint. But the ignominious fate of faith in our own time is mimicked by the corresponding downfall of reason, which in its turn is mostly used to calculate social control, warfare, or at best, economic trends. Could it be, for the first time in the history of human consciousness, that both reason and faith, in the face of their respective sacrifices, need one another more than ever, the separated siblings and estranged lovers that they are? That we live inside the question of our own existence should not be seen as a too-cunning conundrum, generating only misery and angst, pathos and melancholy. Rather it is the very thrownness of being which we are; resolute in our being-ahead, caring in our anxiety, concernful in our running along. Who better to respond to such a question that, though it bears the historicity of existence alone, marks us in our essence with a history of ontology that is shared and which constitutes our specific nature? (From the book) “Though it is not directly a part of my job as a critical philosopher, offending as many people as possible as succinctly as possible is a commonplace effect of my work.” So Loewen opens ‘The Return of the Martyr,’ a wickedly funny and equally perceptive critique of the moral panics surrounding the issue of gender identity and other fashionable faux pas. And this is merely one of the over twenty singularly insightful essays collected here for the first time. Nothing is beyond a reasoned and rational reproach, and each piece serves as a role model for the rest of us to take up the torch of a truly transformative ethics.” (From the publisher)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cligès" become written through the French poet Chretien de Troyes. The tale turns into a tale of love, honor, and courtly intrigue. The story is commonly about Cligès, the primary person, who's the Byzantine Emperor's nephew. Cligès falls strongly in love with Fenice, who's married to his uncle, and the two have an affair that is towards the policies. The book talks about courtly love, loyalty, and how complex relationships are within the upper elegance. Chretien de Troyes places together a complex internet of stories with elements of tour and political maneuvering. The tale is shaped with the aid of the tropes of medieval romance, such as quests, battles, and the code of chivalry. As Cligès offers with the issues that arise due to his forbidden love, the story goes into the ethical and moral problems that the characters ought to deal with. People realize Chretien de Troyes for his paintings on Arthurian fiction, and "Cligès" is no one of a kind. The poem suggests how good the poet changed into at writing a tale that appears into the subtleties of human feelings, societal expectations, and the thoughts of courtly love that are not unusual in medieval literature. For many years, "Cligès" has been a critical part of Arthurian literature, showing how famous memories of affection and bravery had been inside the Middle Ages.

Book The Squire of Sandal Side A Pastoral Romance

Download or read book The Squire of Sandal Side A Pastoral Romance written by Amelia Edith Huddleston Barr and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÊThere is a mountain called Seat-Sandal, between the Dunmail Raise and Grisedale Pass; and those who have stood upon its summit know that Grasmere vale and lake lie at their feet, and that Windermere, Esthwaite, and Coniston, with many arms of the sea, and a grand brotherhood of mountains, are all around them. There is also an old gray manor-house of the same name. It is some miles distant from the foot of the mountain, snugly sheltered in one of the loveliest valleys between Coniston and Torver. No one knows when the first stones of this house were laid. The Sandals were in Sandal-Side when the white-handed, waxen-faced Edward was building Westminster Abbey, and William the Norman was laying plans for the crown of England. Probably they came with those Norsemen who a century earlier made the Isle of Man their headquarters, and from it, landing on the opposite coast of Cumberland, settled themselves among valleys and lakes and mountains of primeval beauty, which must have strongly reminded them of their native land. For the prevailing names of this district are all of the Norwegian type, especially such abounding suffixes and prefixes asseat from "set," a dwelling; dale from "dal," a valley; fell from "fjeld," a mountain; garth from "gard," an enclosure; andthwaite, from "thveit," a clearing. It is certain, also, that, in spite of much Anglo-Saxon admixture, the salt blood of the roving Viking is still in the Cumberland dalesman. Centuries of bucolic isolation have not obliterated it. Every now and then the sea calls some farmer or shepherd, and the restless drop in his veins gives him no peace till he has found his way over the hills and fells to the port of Whitehaven, and gone back to the cradling bosom that rocked his ancestors. But in the main, this lovely spot was a northern Lotus-land to the Viking. The great hills shut him in from the sight of the sea. He built himself a "seat," and enclosed "thwaites" of greater or less extent; and, forgetting the world in his green paradise, was for centuries almost forgotten by the world. And if long descent and an ancient family have any special claim to be held honorable, it is among the Cumberland "statesmen," or freeholders, it must be looked for in England. The Sandals have been wise and fortunate owners of the acres which Lšgberg Sandal cleared for his descendants. They have a family tradition that he came from Iceland in his own galley; and a late generation has written out portions of a saga,Ñlong orally transmitted,Ñwhich relates the incidents of his voyage. All the Sandals believe implicitly in its authenticity; and, indeed, though it is full of fighting, of the plunder of gold and rich raiment, and the carrying off of fair women, there is nothingimprobable in its relations, considering the people and the time whose story it professes to tell.
