Download or read book Big White Ghetto written by Kevin D. Williamson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You can't truly understand the country you're living in without reading Williamson." —Rich Lowry, National Review "His observations on American culture, history, and politics capture the moment we're in—and where we are going." —Dana Perino, Fox News An Appalachian economy that uses cases of Pepsi as money. Life in a homeless camp in Austin. A young woman whose résumé reads, “Topless Chick, Uncredited.” Remorselessly unsentimental, Kevin D. Williamson is a chronicler of American underclass dysfunction unlike any other. From the hollows of Eastern Kentucky to the porn business in Las Vegas, from the casinos of Atlantic City to the heroin rehabs of New Orleans, he depicts an often brutal reality that does not fit nicely into any political narrative or comfort any partisan. Coming from the world he writes about, Williamson understands it in a way that most commentators on American politics and culture simply can’t. In these sometimes savage and often hilarious essays, he takes readers on a wild tour of the wreckage of the American republic—the “white minstrel show” of right-wing grievance politics, progressive politicians addicted to gambling revenue, the culture of passive victimhood, and the reality of permanent poverty. Unsparing yet never unsympathetic, Big White Ghetto provides essential insight into an enormous but forgotten segment of American society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Scattered By Design was the arrival time for Joshua Harris and a signal that he's happy to be here, then the 2nd edition of this riveting poetry series must mean that he's here and looking to become a household name. The phrase, "What we do in life, echoes in eternity" is one that one that Harris tends to live by, the other "Nothing But Us" is a staple of what you can expect from him as well. "Scattered By Design II" looks to cement and leave a mark on a legacy of a guy who has endured many failures and successes, this is one person who is more than willing to be your guide in the various challenges you will face in life. This is very strong continuation of what we saw in the original book. Through some of his poems like "Bitter Boy" & "Back to the drawing board" are just a few of the pieces that he considers some of his best and truthful work to date. There will be plenty more for you to choose from as you read. His style is RAW, unorthodox, authentic, direct & leaves room for you to use your imagination. If you are a fan of writing and art, you will not be disappointed. More poems, more storytelling, more passion, and finally, more candid speech that will offer up a myriad of emotions inside of you. With this new collection of poems done in a span of almost two years, (99 to be exact) Joshua presses all the buttons in this one. He even uses one poem to pay homage to a legend in what he calls, "A modern day retouch, a remix." The return of this sequel is a welcomed one. Scattered By Design II is more than a poetry book, it's relief, it's a story of triumph, validation and a walking journal of one of the most exciting poets you can come across.

Book excerpt: Who killed Russell Dixon? When Agatha Lapp’s brother and sister-in-law are tragically killed in a buggy accident, Agatha relocates to the new Amish community in Hunt Texas, nestled in the Texas Hill Country. She’s there to make a success of her brother’s dream--an Amish B&B. Agatha is friendly, efficient, and capable. She's also a fifty-five year old widow who has learned to be independent. Then she discovers Russell Dixon’s lifeless body in Cabin 3. She runs next door where retired detective Tony Vargas lives. The police determine that her guest died of natural causes, but as Agatha and Tony put together the events of the previous two days they become convinced that the police are Dead Wrong. Dead Wrong is a story of discovering new friendships and embracing a different path in the midst of tragedy. Above all else, it's a story of God's grace and provision. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Agatha hurried down the path carrying the towering pile of fresh linens. Fonzi lay in the sun, curled like the letter U. She’d inherited the yellow cat with the B&B. One more cabin to service and she could turn her attentions to putting the finishing touches on dinner. Cabin 3 sat a little farther down the path and around the bend. Perhaps that’s why Mr. Dixon had chosen it. He seemed to value his privacy. Agatha stepped onto the porch but paused outside the front door. She clearly stated that the rooms would be serviced in the afternoon between three and five, but there was always the possibility that Mr. Dixon had decided to take a late afternoon nap. Nothing worse than walking in on a guest who was fast asleep, snoring with his mouth wide open and his glasses askew. She’d learned that lesson the first week she’d reopened the B&B. Knocking firmly on the door, she called out, “Anyone home? Agatha Lapp here.” No answer. Well, she hadn’t thought there would be. It was a beautiful June afternoon. Why would anyone be inside? She tried the door on the off chance it had been left unlocked. Definitely locked, and the curtains were drawn tight as well. Agatha called out one more time, then reached into the pocket of her apron and fetched her master key. Slipping it into the lock, she pushed the door open with what she hoped was a friendly, “Anyone home? Just here to change the…” She never did finish that sentence. Her mind reeled, trying to make sense of the scene before her. Mr. Dixon’s suitcase had been flung open and clothes tossed around the room. The breakfast tray she’d left on the porch earlier that morning sat on the nightstand by the bed, though the mug had been knocked over and lay shattered on the floor. The bedding had been dragged toward the open back door. She glanced around as if Mr. Dixon might pop out from the broom closet. But there was no sign of the man. No indication of what had happened. She stepped toward the back door and peered outside, which was when her knees began to shake. She reached for the doorframe with one hand as her other fluttered to her chest and pressed against it to slow the hammering of her heart. She simply couldn’t make the details of what she was seeing fit together into a cohesive picture—Russell Dixon lying face down at the edge of the clearing, one hand trapped beneath him and the other reaching over his head. The unnatural position confirmed what her mind couldn’t accept. Mr. Dixon wouldn’t be caring if she changed his linens because Mr. Dixon was literally dead to the world. Download or read book San Camilo 1936 written by Camilo José Cela and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely regarded as one of the best works by the winner of the 1989 Nobel Prize for Literature, San Camilo, 1936 appears here for the first time in English translation. One of Spain's most popular writers, Camilo José Cela is recognized for his experiments with language and with difficult subject matter. In San Camilo, 1936, first published in 1969, these concerns converge in a fascinating narrative that is as challenging as it is rewarding, as troubling as it is compelling. A story of history as it happens, by turns confusing and startingly clear, echoing with news and rumors, defined by grand gestures and intimate pauses, the novel leads the reader into the ordinary life of extraordinary times. Beginning on the eve of the Spanish Civil War, San Camilo, 1936 follows a twenty-year-old student's attempts to sort out his private affairs (sex, money, career) in the midst of the turmoil overtaking his country. In vivid and richly textured prose that distinguishes Cela's work, the emotional reality of civil war takes on a vibrant immediacy that is humorous, tender, and ultimately transforming as a young man tries to come to terms with the historical moment he inhabits--and hopes to survive. Readers new to Cela will find in this novel ample reason for the author's growing reputation among audiences worldwide.

Download or read book Dead Ringers written by Jennifer Forrest and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the popular press has criticized movie remakes as signs of Hollywood's collective lack of imagination, the essays in Dead Ringers reveal the centrality and staying power of remakes as a formative genre in filmmaking. The contributors show that the practice of remaking films dates back to the origins of cinema and the evolution of film markets. In fact, remakes were never so prevalent as during the Classic Hollywood period, when filmmaking had achieved its greatest degree of industrialization, and they continue to play a crucial role in the development of film genres generally. Offering a variety of historical, commercial, theoretical, and cultural perspectives on the remake, Dead Ringers is a valuable resource for students of film history and theory, as well as those interested in the cultural politics of the late twentieth century.
