Book excerpt: Destiny is a journey, not a finish-line. A warrior designs his destiny with each step along his path. I have fought pirates on the choppy waters of the Mediterranean Sea. I have wept beside the statue of Alexander, in Hispania. I have risen from defeat at the hands of Pompey, who was once my friend. On the muddy banks of the Rubicon, I have made a difficult decision for a unique problem—just like you might be facing today. But guess what? You don’t need a herculean physique to fight the battles of life. And you don’t need a famous father or mountains of sestertii. Just like I didn’t need them in ancient times to blaze a trail for Roman emperors, you don’t need them, even today. All you need is grit—never letting self-doubt crush your spirit, even in the face of overwhelming odds. Journey with me as we battle foes on land, on sea—and in life, at times victorious, at others crying in frustration, but always gaining clarity about our destiny, and striving towards it. Along this road, feel free to pick up skills that made me who I am. Caesar: Escapades in Rome is not a book about Roman history; instead, it is a chronicle of my non-stop adventures through Ancient Rome.

Book excerpt: Meg Flanagan had faithfully served the Lord as a nun for the Sisters of Saint Joseph for more than twenty-five years. She enjoyed a spiritual peace that was unparalleled. Meg taught high school biology for an impoverished Catholic school in Newark, New Jersey. Life seemed perfect, until she "got sick." That was the catchphrase the faculty used. Only those closest to her knew she had cancer. She beat her breast cancer, but she came back to school with a restless soul. Was there more to life than the only world she knew? Karch Kummen was a vibrant, younger teacher who invited the Sisters to his family's Pocono Mountain cabin for a winter getaway while he and his parents skied. Meg asked Karch if he could teach her to ski. He held her close as together they skied down the mountain. Months later, after a meeting, she admitted to Karch in an empty classroom that she wished she had someone to kiss. Meg was slowly being seduced. It was not a physical seduction, but one that was emotional. He showed her a wonderful life beyond the walls of her convent she had never experienced. Karch invited her to his family's oceanfront beach house. There, he took her on fast amusement rides, a boogie board, sailing, and on a bike trip. He also kept her safe when a hurricane hit the Jersey coast. However, with that emotional seduction inevitably came a slow, physical seduction. Did Meg have the strength of heart to finally resist the world he offered, or did she have the weakness of the flesh and would eventually succumb to Karch? Only time would tell.

The magical folk mixed with the natives, bringing culture and sophistication, and made the island one of the wealthiest, most powerful nations in the known world. In one night, all is lost. Imoshen, namesake of the first Empress, is the last pure-blooded T'En woman, left behind when her kinfolk went to die in defence of their homeland. The savage Ghebites, barbarians from the warm north, have conquered Fair Isle, and their general, Tulkhan, claims her as his right of conquest. Proud and fierce, trained in arts of war and possessed of extraordinary healing gifts, Imoshen must choose to submit to the barbarian soldier and save her people's heritage... or to die in a futile gesture of defiance.

Book Building up the Waste Places

Download or read book Building up the Waste Places written by Peter Anson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of this book gives a general idea of its subject matter--a sideline of the nineteenth-century Gothic Revival in art and literature. This took the form among High Church Anglicans, not only of restoring parish churches and cathedrals, but also founding brotherhoods on supposedly medieval lines. "Olde Worlde" externals, such as flowing black robes, shaven heads, sandals and rosary beads, helped to make young men forget that they were living in the midst of an industrial revolution. To a large extent, the whole business of building up monastic waste places was a form of escapism. As the reader will discover, the result was often as unreal as the twilight world pictured by Alfred Tennyson in his series of connected poems entitled Idylls of the King, which appeared at intervals between 1842 and 1885. The earlier "monkeries," with their dim religious light and Gothic gloom described in these pages, were contemporary with Anthony Trollope's Barsetshire series of novels. Anson has dealt already with the revival of the religious life for men and women within the Anglican Communion in The Benedictines of Caldey (1940), The Call of the Cloister (1955), and Abbot Extraordinary (1958). In his latest book, he concentrates on Father Ignatius of Jesus, Abbot Aelred Carlyle, and Father Hopkins, each of whom tried to restore Benedictine monastic life in the post-Reformation Church of England. Much new material has been discovered in recent years that debunks more than one lovely legend. The octogenarian author has not been afraid to disclose many facts which some readers may feel ought to have been kept hidden, for they are not exactly edifying. The entire book might be summed up in Lord Byron's words: "'Tis strange--but true; for truth is always stranger than fiction."
