Suetonius Tranquillus was the son of a Roman knight who commanded a legion, on the side of Otho, at the battle which decided the fate of the empire in favour of Vitellius. From incidental notices in the following History, we learn that he was born towards the close of the reign of Vespasian, who died in the year 79 of the Christian era. He lived till the time of Hadrian, under whose administration he filled the office of secretary; until, with several others, he was dismissed for presuming on familiarities with the empress Sabina, of which we have no further account than that they were unbecoming his position in the imperial court. How long he survived this disgrace, which appears to have befallen him in the year 121, we are not informed; but we find that the leisure afforded him by his retirement, was employed in the composition of numerous works, of which the only portions now extant are collected in the present volume. Several of the younger Pliny's letters are addressed to Suetonius, with whom he lived in the closest friendship. They afford some brief, but generally pleasant, glimpses of his habits and career; and in a letter, in which Pliny makes application on behalf of his friend to the emperor Trajan, for a mark of favour, he speaks of him as "a most excellent, honourable, and learned man, whom he had the pleasure of entertaining under his own roof, and with whom the nearer he was brought into communion, the more he loved him."

He is mainly remembered as the author of De Vita Caesarum (Lives of the Caesars, best known in English as The Twelve Caesars), his only extant work. The Twelve Caesars, probably written in Hadrian's time, is a collective biography of the Roman Empire's first leaders who were: Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Galba, Otho, Vitellius, Vespasian, Titus and Domitian. The work tells the tale of each Caesar's life according to a set formula: the descriptions of appearance, omens, family history, quotes, and then a history are given in a consistent order for each Caesar. Suetonius regarded emperors who amassed wealth for the public purse to be "greedy", perhaps a reflection of the average Roman middle class attitudes.

Book Perspective in the Visual Culture of Classical Antiquity

Download or read book Perspective in the Visual Culture of Classical Antiquity written by Rocco Sinisgalli and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-17 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear perspective is a science that represents objects in space upon a plane, projecting them from a point of view. This concept was known in classical antiquity. In this book, Rocco Sinisgalli investigates theories of linear perspective in the classical era. Departing from the received understanding of perspective in the ancient world, he argues that ancient theories of perspective were primarily based on the study of objects in mirrors, rather than the study of optics and the workings of the human eye. In support of this argument, Sinisgalli analyzes, and offers new insights into, some of the key classical texts on this topic, including Euclid's De speculis, Lucretius' De rerum natura, Vitruvius' De architectura and Ptolemy's De opticis. Key concepts throughout the book are clarified and enhanced by detailed illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twelve Caesars (121 CE) can be considered one of the most picturesque biographical works ever written. It records the lives of the people who brandished complete power in Rome after it transformed from being a republic into an empire in 27 BCE. Suetonius was closely familiar with court life as he was a private secretary to one of the emperors, Hadrian. He uses that information in The Twelve Caesars to reveal insights into the ups and downs of the empire's early years, as well as the ideals and flaws of its seemingly divine rulers. The composition of the individual memoirs has frequently perplexed modern readers, who expect Suetonius to recount his story in an even and linear manner from the ruler's birth to his death. Suetonius generally began the autobiography with the emperor's family and his upbringing; the majority of each memoir consists of a myriad of memorable anecdotes about an emperor's private life and his public conduct. Be that as it may, this is not a mere inventory of corruption and sex. Instead, Suetonius lets his readers know that he has carefully organized the narratives "by categories." These categories incorporate the emperor's morality and his vices. After the vices and virtues, Suetonius' Lives normally conclude with a story of the emperor's passing and a comprehensive physical description of his body.
