Download or read book The De Stijl Environment written by Nancy J. Troy and published by Mit Press. This book was released on 1983-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dutch magazine De Stijl, published from 1917 to 1931, was the focus of a remarkable group of advanced artists and architects who sought to combine their individual talents in collaborative projects that reflected their social and aesthetic ideals. The De Stijl Environment explores the group's approach to exterior and interior spaces and to furniture. It treats such themes as color, abstraction, and the corner, and describes the various collaborative efforts within the movement, in particular, the one that produced the De Stijl environment. Troy traces its evolution from an architecturally defined space to one determined by coloristic design. Among the painters discussed are Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg, Vilmos Huszar, and Bart van der Liek; the architects include Gerrit Rietveld, Rob van't Hoff, Jan Wils, J. J. P Oud, and Cornelius van Eesteren. Nancy J. Troy is Associate Professor of Art History, Northwestern University.

Download or read book Towards Universality written by Richard Padovan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no shortage of books about Le Corbusier, or Mies van der Rohe, or De Stijl. However, this book considers them in relation to each other, observing how a study of one can illuminate the works of the others. Going beyond a superficial look at the end-products of these architects, this book examines the philosophical foundations of their work, taking as its central theme the aim of universality, as opposed to the individual and the particular. Each of these three aimed at universality, but for each this concept took on a different form. The universality of De Stijl and artists like Van Doesburg and Mondrian resembled that of the universe itself: it was boundless, going beyond the limits of the canvas and seeking to abolish the wall as the boundary between interior and exterior space. In contrast, each of Le Corbusier’s creations was a self-contained universe within a clear frame, while Mies fluctuated between these two perspectives.

Download or read book Hendrik Petrus Berlage written by Hendrik Petrus Berlage and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hendrik Petrus Berlage, the Dutch architect and architectural philosopher, created a series of buildings and a body of writings from 1886 to 1909 that were among the first efforts to probe the problems and possibilities of modernism. Although his Amsterdam Stock Exchange, with its rational mastery of materials and space, has long been celebrated for its seminal influence on the architecture of the 20th century, Berlage's writings are highlighted here. Bringing together Berlage's most important texts, among them "Thoughts on Style in Architecture", "Architecture's Place in Modern Aesthetics", and "Art and Society", this volume presents a chapter in the history of European modernism. In his introduction, Iain Boyd Whyte demonstrates that the substantial contribution of Berlage's designs to modern architecture cannot be fully appreciated without an understanding of the aesthetic principles first laid out in his writings.
Download or read book De Stijl and Dutch Modernism written by Michael White and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-20 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name De Stijl, title of a magazine founded in the Netherlands in 1917, is now used to identify the abstract art and functional architecture of its major contributors: Mondrian, Van Doesburg, Van der Leck, Oud, Wils and Rietveld. De Stijl achieved international acclaim by the end of the 1920s and its paintings, buildings and furniture made fundamental contributions to the modern movement. This book is the first to emphasize the local context of De Stijl and explore its relationship to the distinctive character of Dutch modernism. It examines how the debates concerning abstraction in painting and spatiality in architecture were intimately connected to contemporary developments in the fields of urban planning, advertising, interior design and exhibition design. The book describes the interaction between the world of mass culture and the fine arts.
Download or read book Piet Mondrian 1872 1944 written by Susanne Deicher and published by Taschen. This book was released on 1999 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents Dutch painter Piet Mondrian (1872-1944). His earliest landscapes are rendered in an Impressionistic style but, possess the marked vertical and horizontal tendencies that foreshadow his mature paintings. Mondrian's work began to show the influences of Cubism, and in 1912, the artist moved to Paris where he continued to refine his style, continually exploring increasingly sophisticated compositions. In his paintings, Mondrian strove to achieve a universal form of expression by reducing form and color to their simplest components. The artist termed his work "Neo-Plasticism". Mondrian's most well-known works consisted of white ground, upon which was painted a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the three primary colors.

Download or read book Style in the Technical and Tectonic Arts Or Practical Aesthetics written by Gottfried Semper and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 996 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enduring influence of the architect Gottfried Semper (1803-1879) derives primarily from his monumental theoretical foray Der Stil in der technischen und tektonischen Künsten (1860-62), here translated into English for the first time. A richly illustrated survey of the technical arts (textiles, ceramics, carpentry, masonry), Semper's analysis of the preconditions of style forever changed the interpretative context for aesthetics, architecture, and art history. Style, Semper believed, should be governed by historical function, cultural affinities, creative free will, and the innate properties of each medium. Thus, in an ambitious attempt to turn nineteenth-century artistic discussion away from historicism, aestheticism, and materialism, Semper developed in Der Stil a complex picture of stylistic change based on scrutiny of specific objects and a remarkable grasp of cultural variety. Harry Francis Mallgrave's introductory essay offers an account of Semper's life and work, a survey of Der Stil, and a fresh consideration of Semper's landmark study and its lasting significance.
Download or read book Georges Vantongerloo written by Georges Vantongerloo and published by Actar. This book was released on 2009 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The catalogue is published on the occasion of the first individual exhibition of Georges Vantongerloo in Spain. The catalogue reveals the grounding of his work in the re-conceptualisation of pictorial and sculptural space that marked the abstract tendencies in art of the early 20th century. In the 1920s an important part of the Vantongerloos investigation was centred on colour as physical and perceptive phenomenon. Later, Vantongerloo will conceive his works according to strictly geometric rules, algebraic afterwards, to turn, thus, into the founder of the mathematical thought in art in our epoch. Genuine pioneer in the abstract sculpture field, the artist will continue, after 1945, proposing peculiar versions of that kind of sculpture, abandoning all the reference to a built geometry, and opening to a subjective approach to the universe of cosmology.
