Book Rutilius Namatianus Going Home

Download or read book Rutilius Namatianus Going Home written by Martha Malamud and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martha Malamud provides the only scholarly English translation of De Reditu Suo with significant notes and commentary that explore historical, literary, cultural, and mythical references, as well as commenting on literary allusions, the structure, diction, and style of the poem, and textual issues. De Reditu Suo provides fascinating insights into travel and communications networks in the rapidly changing, fragmented world of the fifth century. A substantial introductory essay explores Rutilius’ place in several intellectual and literary traditions, as the poem is a sophisticated piece of literature that both draws on the rich tradition of classical Latin poetry and reflects the distinctive formal features of late antique poetry. The poem also conveys the thoughts of a man passionately devoted to Rome and its cultural heritage, enmeshed in the tumultuous political and social upheaval of his day, caught between his hopes for Rome’s restoration and his fear of its disintegration. With line-for-line translation from the Latin and a scholarly introduction, extensive notes, and comprehensive bibliography, Martha Malamud makes this important text accessible and relevant for students and scholars in Classics, Comparative Literature, Religious Studies, Medieval Studies, and Ancient History, as well as independent readers with an interest in the literature of the period.

Book excerpt: This is an edition of the poem, De reditu suo, of Claudius Rutilius Namatianus, about the poet's voyage from Rome to Gaul in the year AD 417. This is the first prose translation of the Latin poem into English since the Loeb edition of the Duff brothers in 1935. This Roman aristocrat was a native of Gaul, who served as governor of Rome in 414, not long after the sack of Rome in 410. This elegant elegiac poem contains a humanly touching personal element, which proclaims his deep devotion both to Rome and to his native Gaul. Within the poem one can find a fascinating insight into the civilization and culture of the Roman empire in the early fifth century. The edition contains an Introduction, the Latin text, an English prose translation, Notes, bibliography, an index of all the Latin words in the poem, and an index of Names.

  • Pages : 130 pages

Download or read book De Regno written by Thomas Aquinas and published by . This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work by Aquinas begins by discussing different types of political systems, using the classical classifications. Only rule which is directed "towards the common good of the multitude is fit to be called kingship," he argues. Rule by one man who "seeks his own benefit from his rule and not the good of the multitude subject to him" is called a "tyrant." He argues that "Just as the government of a king is the best, so the government of a tyrant is the worst," maintaining that rule by a single individual is the most efficient for accomplishing either good or evil purposes. He then proceeds to discuss "how provision might be made that the king may not fall into tyranny," stressing education and noting that "government of the kingdom must be so arranged that opportunity to tyrannize is removed." He then proceeds to consider what honor is due to kings, to discuss the appropriate qualities of a king, and to make some points on founding and maintaining a city. Principium autem intentionis nostrae hinc sumere oportet, ut quid nomine regis intelligendum sit, exponatur.

Book The Roman Villa in the Mediterranean Basin

Download or read book The Roman Villa in the Mediterranean Basin written by Annalisa Marzano and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a comprehensive survey of Roman villas in Italy and the Mediterranean provinces of the Roman Empire, from their origins to the collapse of the Empire. The architecture of villas could be humble or grand, and sometimes luxurious. Villas were most often farms where wine, olive oil, cereals, and manufactured goods, among other products, were produced. They were also venues for hospitality, conversation, and thinking on pagan, and ultimately Christian, themes. Villas spread as the Empire grew. Like towns and cities, they became the means of power and assimilation, just as infrastructure, such as aqueducts and bridges, was transforming the Mediterranean into a Roman sea. The distinctive Roman/Italian villa type was transferred to the provinces, resulting in Mediterranean-wide culture of rural dwelling and work that further unified the Empire.

Download or read book Prudentius Psychomachia written by Marc Mastrangelo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-27 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new translation brings to life Prudentius' Psychomachia, one of the most widely read poems in western Europe from Late Antiquity through the Renaissance. With accompanying notes and introduction, this volume provides a fresh exploration of its themes and influence. The Psychomachia of Prudentius (348–c. 405), an allegorical epic poem of nearly 1,000 lines about the battle between the virtues and the vices for possession of the human soul, led early modern scholars to refer to the late antique poet as "the Christian Vergil." Combining depictions of violent, single combats with allusions to pagan epic poetry, biblical scenes, and Christian doctrine, the poem captures the dynamism of the later Roman Empire in which the pagan world was giving way to a new, Christian Europe. In this volume, the introduction sets the historical and literary context and illuminates the Psychomachia’s prominent role in western literary history. Mastrangelo’s translation aims to capture the rhetorical power of the author’s Roman Christian Latin for the 21st-century reader. The notes provide the reader with in-depth information on Prudentius’ Latinity, the Roman epic tradition, and Christian doctrine. This volume is directed at students and scholars across the disciplines of comparative literature, classics, religion, and ancient and medieval studies, as well as any reader interested in the history and development of literature in the West.
