Book excerpt: Excerpt from De Officiis The De Oficiis is the last of the long series of philosophical works which Cicero gave to the world during the closing years of his life, when condemned to political inaction. After the final overthrow of the senatorial party, when the con stitution of the republic was supplanted by the will of the Democratic King and little scope was left for individual effort, Cicero had voluntarily retired from the political arena, and lived for the most part in the country. With the assassination of Caesar in March 44 b.c. The hopes of his party rose for a moment only to be dashed to the ground by the intrigues of Antony. Cicero driven from Rome by force and godless arms was compelled to seek safety in ight, and wandered aimlessly for a great part of the year from one of his country seats to another. He was distracted. Death had robbed him of Tullia, the' oy of his life, and he was now an exile from his beloved city. Once more he turns for consolation to active literary work, and in the composition of this hortatory treatise completes his patriotic design of transplanting philosophy from Athens to Rome and popularising its study among his countrymen. The events of the stormy year 44 are re ected in the acrimonious allusions to contemporary politics and the many imperfections of the work in thought and language. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cicero: De Officiis In the de Officiis we have, save for the latter Philippics, the great orator's last contribution to literature. The last, sad, troubled years of his busy life could not be given to his profession; and he turned his never-resting thoughts to the second love of his Student days and made Greek philosophy a possibility for Roman readers. The senate had been abolished; the courts had been closed. His occupation was gone; but Cicero could not surrender himself to idleness. In those days of distraction (46-43 B.C.) he produced for publication almost as much as in all his years of active life. The liberators had been able to remove the tyrant, but they could not restore the republic. Cicero's own life was in danger from the fury of mad Antony and he left Rome about the end of March, 44 B.C. He dared not even stop permanently in any one of his various country estates, but, wretched, wandered from one of his villas to another nearly all the summer and autumn through. He would not suffer himself to become a prey to his overwhelming sorrow at the death of the republic and the final crushing of the hopes that had risen with Caesar's downfall, but worked at the highest tension on his philosophical studies. The Romans were not philosophical. In 161 B.C. the senate passed a decree excluding all philosophers and teachers of rhetoric from the city. Tullii Ciceronis De Officiis Libri Tres: With English Notes He had sent him to Athens to pursue the study of philosophy under Cratippus; but moved by some unfavorable reports respecting his con duct there, he had determined to visit him. A storm interrupted his voyage soon after he had weighed anchor, and drove him back to the shore of Italy, and news from Rome prevented his setting sail again. He wrote this treatise, therefore, as a substitute for the oral counsel which he had intended to give. This fact - the fact that the work is addressed by Cicero to his son - gives direction to the course of thought contained in it. It is not a code of morals for mankind in general, but it is particularly adapted to the circumstances of the son of a distin guished Roman statesman, who might be expected to seek distinction in public life as his father had done. The book, therefore, does not address itself to the middle and lower classes, except as the general principles embodied and discussed in it are applicable to their condi tion. The examples and illustrations are all drawn from the highest offices in the state and from the highest walks of life. Thus the value of the treatise as a philosophical work is perhaps diminished by the contraction of its scope, while the interest in it is increased by the frs quent display of parental regard.
