PART II De Mundi Sensibilis atque Intelligibilis Forma et Principiis Dissertation On The Form And Principles Of The SenSible And The Intelligible World Section I ON THE IDEA OF A WORCD IN GENERAL Paragraph i As the analysis of a substantial composite terminates only in a part which is not a whole, that is, in a simple part, so synthesis terminates only in a whole which is not a part, that is, the world. In this exposition of the underlying concept I have had regard not only to the marks pertaining to the distinct cognition of the object, but somewhat also to the two-fold genesis of the concept from the nature of the mind, which, being serviceable to a method of deeper metaphysical insight, by way of example appears to me not a little commendable. For it is one thing, the parts being given, to conceive the composition of the whole by an abstract notion of the intellect, and another thing to follow out this general notion considered as a problem of the reason by the cognitive sensuous faculty, that is, to represent it to one's self in the concrete 121] 43 by a distinct intuition. The former is done through the class concept by composition, as several things are contained either under it or mutually, and hence by intellectual and universal ideas. The latter rests on the conditions of time, inasmuch as the concept of a composite is possible genetically, that is by synthesis, by the successive union of part to part, and falls under the laws of intuition. Similarly, a substantial composite being given, we easily attain to the idea of the simple parts by the general removal of the intellectual notion of composition; for what remains after the removal of conjunction are the simple parts. But according to the laws of intuitive cognition this is...

Book Of the Sensible and Intelligible Form and Principles of the World

Download or read book Of the Sensible and Intelligible Form and Principles of the World written by Immanuel Kant and published by Newcomb Livraria Press. This book was released on with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new 2024 translation of Immanuel Kant's "Of the sensible and intelligible form and principles of the world" from the original Latin manuscript first published in 1770. The original Latin title is "De mundi sensibilis atque intelligibilis forma et principiis'. This new edition contains an afterword by the translator, a timeline of Kant's life and works, and a helpful index of Kant's key concepts and intellectual rivals. This translation is designed for readability, rendering Kant's enigmatic German into the simplest equivalent possible, and removing the academic footnotes to make this critically important historical text as accessible as possible to the modern reader. This is Kant's inaugural dissertation, which he had to write in Latin before taking up his position as full professor of logic and metaphysics at the University of Königsberg, and which he defended together with Marcus Herz on August 21, 1770. In this dissertation, Kant meticulously distinguishes between the sensory and the intellectual realms, along with the human cognitive faculties and principles associated with each. He identifies two distinct, non-interchangeable spheres and sources of knowledge: the sensual world (mundus sensibilis), which represents phenomena as they are perceived by the senses, and the intellectual world (mundus intelligibilis), which denotes the realm of independently existing mental content. Kant defines metaphysics as a philosophy that "embraces the fundamental principles for the application of pure reason"; it must rigorously ensure "that the principles of sense knowledge remain within their bounds and do not encroach upon the intellectual realm". In addition, in this work he introduces the concept that time and space are not objective realities, but rather forms of sensory intuition for finite beings that precede sensory experience - a concept also central to the Critique of Pure Reason. Conversely, the subjects of moral philosophy are "ascertainable only by pure reason".

Book Theoretical Philosophy 1755 1770

Download or read book Theoretical Philosophy 1755 1770 written by Immanuel Kant and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-06-02 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume of the first ever comprehensive edition of the works of Immanuel Kant in English translation. The eleven essays in this volume constitute Kant's theoretical, pre-critical philosophical writings from 1755 to 1770. Several of these pieces have never been translated into English before; others have long been unavailable in English. We can trace in these works the development of Kant's thought to the eventual emergence in 1770 of the two chief tenets of his mature philosophy: the subjectivity of space and time, and the phenomena-noumena distinction. The volume has been furnished with substantial editorial apparatus, including a general introduction to the main themes of Kant's early thought, introduction to the individual works and résumés of their contents, linguistic and factual notes, bibliographies, a glossary of key terms, and biographical-bibliographical sketches of persons mentioned by Kant.

Book Kant s Doctrine of Transcendental Illusion

Download or read book Kant s Doctrine of Transcendental Illusion written by Michelle Grier and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-02-05 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major study of Kant provides a detailed examination of the development and function of the doctrine of transcendental illusion in his theoretical philosophy. The author shows that a theory of 'illusion' plays a central role in Kant's arguments about metaphysical speculation and scientific theory. Indeed, she argues that we cannot understand Kant unless we take seriously his claim that the mind inevitably acts in accordance with ideas and principles that are 'illusory'. Taking this claim seriously, we can make much better sense of Kant's arguments and reach a deeper understanding of the role he allots human reason in science.

Book Anima Mundi The Rise of the World Soul Theory in Modern German Philosophy

Download or read book Anima Mundi The Rise of the World Soul Theory in Modern German Philosophy written by Miklós Vassányi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-16 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents and philosophically analyzes the early modern and modern history of the theory concerning the soul of the world, anima mundi. The initial question of the investigation is why there was a revival of this theory in the time of the early German Romanticism, whereas the concept of the anima mundi had been rejected in the earlier, classical period of European philosophy (early and mature Enlightenment). The presentation and analysis starts from the Leibnizian-Wolffian school, generally hostile to the theory, and covers classical eighteenth-century physico-theology, also reluctant to accept an anima mundi. Next, it discusses early modern and modern Christian philosophical Cabbala (Böhme and Ötinger), an intellectual tradition which to some extent tolerated the idea of a soul of the world. The philosophical relationship between Spinoza and Spinozism on the one hand, and the anima mundi theory on the other is also examined. An analysis of Giordano Bruno’s utilization of the concept anima del mondo is the last step before we give an account of how and why German Romanticism, especially Baader and Schelling asserted and applied the theory of the Weltseele. The purpose of the work is to prove that the philosophical insufficiency of a concept of God as an ens extramundanum instigated the Romantics to think an anima mundi that can act as a divine and quasi-infinite intermediary between God and Nature, as a locum tenens of God in physical reality.

Book Schopenhauer On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason and Other Writings

Download or read book Schopenhauer On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason and Other Writings written by Arthur Schopenhauer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-20 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of translations unites three shorter works by Arthur Schopenhauer that expand on themes from his book The World as Will and Representation. In On the Fourfold Root he takes the principle of sufficient reason, which states that nothing is without a reason why it is, and shows how it covers different forms of explanation or ground that previous philosophers have tended to confuse. Schopenhauer regarded this study, which he first wrote as his doctoral dissertation, as an essential preliminary to The World as Will. On Will in Nature examines contemporary scientific findings in search of corroboration of his thesis that processes in nature are all a species of striving towards ends; and On Vision and Colours defends an anti-Newtonian account of colour perception influenced by Goethe's famous colour theory. This is the first English edition to provide extensive editorial notes on the different published versions of these works.

Book Coleridge s Ancient Mariner

Download or read book Coleridge s Ancient Mariner written by J. C. C. Mays and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study to read the "Ancient Mariner" as "poetry," in Coleridge's own particular sense of the word. Coleridge's complicated relationship with the "Mariner" as an experimental poem lies in its origin as a joint project with Wordsworth. J. C. C. Mays traces the changes in the several versions published in Coleridge's lifetime and shows how Wordsworth's troubled reaction to the poem influenced its subsequent interpretation. This is also the first book to situate the "Mariner" in the context of the entirety of Coleridge's prose and verse, now available in the Bollingen Collected edition and Notebooks; that is, not only in relation to other poems like "The Ballad of the Dark Ladiè" and "Alice du Clós," but also to ideas in his literary criticism (especially Biographia Literaria), philosophy, and theology. Using a combination of close reading and broad historical considerations, reception theory, and book history, Mays surveys the poem's continuing life in illustrated editions and educational textbooks; its passage through the vicissitudes of New Criticism and critical theory; and, in a final chapter, its surprising affinities with some experimental poems of the present time.

Book Natur und Freiheit

Download or read book Natur und Freiheit written by Jyh-Jong Jeng and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2004 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Rethinking Durkheim and his Tradition

Download or read book Rethinking Durkheim and his Tradition written by Warren Schmaus and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-21 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a reassessment of the work of Emile Durkheim in the context of a French philosophical tradition that had seriously misinterpreted Kant by interpreting his theory of the categories as psychological faculties. Durkheim's sociological theory of the categories, as revealed by Warren Schmaus, is an attempt to provide an alternative way of understanding Kant. For Durkheim the categories are necessary conditions for human society. The concepts of causality, space and time underpin the moral rules and obligations that make society possible. A particularly interesting feature of this book is its transcendence of the distinction between intellectual and social history by placing Durkheim's work in the context of the French educational establishment of the Third Republic. It does this by subjecting student notes and philosophy textbooks to the same sort of critical analysis typically applied only to the classics of philosophy.
