Book La Production Du Corps

Download or read book La Production Du Corps written by Maurice Godelier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-14 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Marriage Motive A Price Theory of Marriage

Download or read book The Marriage Motive A Price Theory of Marriage written by Shoshana Grossbard and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While this book contains numerous facts and empirical findings and touches on policy issues, its main contribution to the existing literature lies in the theoretical perspective it offers. The core of this book is a general equilibrium theory of labor and marriage presented in Chapter 2, which provides the conceptual framework for the rest of the chapters. Two major implications of the theory are sex ratio effects and compensating differentials in marriage. The book demonstrates how a few core concepts, linked via economic analysis, help explain a multitude of findings based on statistical analyses of data from a wide variety of cultures. It is hoped that readers of this book will improve their understanding of how marriage works to help us design better economic and social policies as well as help people live better and happier lives, making the book of interest to not only economists but sociologists and anthropologists as well.

Book How Marriage Became One of the Sacraments

Download or read book How Marriage Became One of the Sacraments written by Philip L. Reynolds and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 1083 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the contributions of the medieval church to western culture was the idea that marriage was one of the seven sacraments, which defined the role of married folk in the church. Although it had ancient roots, this new way of regarding marriage raised many problems, to which scholastic theologians applied all their ingenuity. By the late Middle Ages, the doctrine was fully established in Christian thought and practice but not yet as dogma. In the sixteenth century, with the entire Catholic teaching on marriage and celibacy and its associated law and jurisdiction under attack by the Protestant reformers, the Council of Trent defined the doctrine as a dogma of faith for the first time but made major changes to it. Rather than focusing on a particular aspect of intellectual and institutional developments, this book examines them in depth and in detail from their ancient precedents to the Council of Trent.

Book Recognising Customary Marriage in Africa and Civil Marriage Everywhere

Download or read book Recognising Customary Marriage in Africa and Civil Marriage Everywhere written by Michael McGuckian S.J. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of Catholics in Africa are excommunicated because they get married according to their local customs. That is an absurd and scandalous situation, and this book sets out to correct it. The problem is found to rest on three mistakes made down the centuries in the Canon Law. There was the introduction of the Pauline Privilege in the twelfth century. Then the introduction of the canonical form of marriage at the Council of Trent. Then the condemnation of civil marriage in the nineteenth century. When these mistakes are corrected, the solution to the problem is easy. The three mistakes are based on theological errors, and alternative positions are presented here. As well as solving the problem of customary marriages, it also solves the problems around mixed marriages between Catholics and Protestants, and the anomalous ‘double marriages,’ civil and religious, in continental Europe

Book Thomas Middleton and Early Modern Textual Culture

Download or read book Thomas Middleton and Early Modern Textual Culture written by Gary Taylor and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-11-22 with total page 1184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Middleton and Early Modern Textual Culture is not only a companion to The Collected Works of Thomas Middleton, which every scholar of Renaissance literature will find indispensable. It is also essential reading for anyone interested in the history of the book in early modern Europe. The book is divided into two parts. The first part, on 'The Culture', situates Middleton within an historical and theoretical overview of early modern textual production, reproduction, circulation, and reception. An introductory essay by Gary Taylor ('The Order of Persons') surveys lists of persons written by or connected to Middleton, using the complex relationship between textual and social orders to trace the evolution of textual culture in England during the 'Middleton century' (1580-1679). Ten original essays then focus on Middleton's connections to different aspects of textual culture in that century: authorship (by MacD. P. Jackson), manuscripts (Harold Love), legal texts (Edward Geiskes), censorship (Richard Burt), printing (Adrian Weiss), visual texts (John Astington), music (Andrew Sabol), stationers and living authors (Cyndia Clegg), posthumous publishing (Maureen Bell), and early readers (John Jowett). The second part, 'The Texts', supplies the documentation for claims made in the first part. This includes detailed evidence for the canon and chronology of Middleton's works in all genres, greatly extending previous scholarship, and using the latest corpus-based attribution techniques. A full editorial apparatus is supplied for each item in The Collected Works: an Introduction, which summarizes and extends previous scholarship, is followed by textual notes, recording substantive departures from the control-text, variants between early texts, press-variants, discussions of emendations, and (for plays) an exact transcription of all original stage directions. Cross-references make it easy to move between the two volumes. This authoritative account of the early texts includes some extraordinarily complicated cases, which have never before been systematically collated: 'Hence, all you vain delights' (the most popular song lyric from the Renaissance stage), The Two Gates of Salvation, The Peacemaker, and A Game at Chess (the most complex editorial problem in early modern drama, with eight extant texts and numerous reports of the early performances).

Book Marriage Litigation in Medieval England

Download or read book Marriage Litigation in Medieval England written by Helmholz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-03-26 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells one part of the long history of the institution of marriage. Questions concerning the formation and annulment of marriage came under the exclusive jurisdiction of the church courts during the Middle Ages. Drawing on unpublished records of these courts, Professor Helmholz describes the practical side of matrimonial jurisdiction and relates it to his outline of the formal law of marriage. He investigates the nature of the cases heard, the procedure used, the people involved and changes over the period covered, all of which add to what is known about marriage and legal practice in medieval England. The concluding assessment of canonical jurisdiction over marriage suggests that the application of the law was more successful than is usually thought.

Book The Indissolubility of Marriage

Download or read book The Indissolubility of Marriage written by Matthew Levering and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2019-05-10 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-researched book explains why the Catholic Church continues to teach marital indissolubility and addresses the numerous contemporary challenges to that teaching. It surveys the patristic witness to marital indissolubility, along with Orthodox and Protestant views, as well as historical-critical biblical exegesis on the contested biblical passages. It also surveys the Catholic tradition from the Trent through Benedict XVI, and it examines a Catholic argument that the Catholic Church's teaching can and should change. Then it explores Amoris Laetitia, the papal exhortation from Pope Francis on marriage, and the various major responses to it, with the issue of marital indissolubility at the forefront. Finally, it retrieves Aquinas's theology of marital indissolubility as a contribution to deepening current theological discussions. The author argues that Amoris Laetitia upholds the traditional Catholic teaching that a valid and consummated Christian marriage is absolutely indissoluble, in accord with the teachings of Jesus and the Apostle Paul, as solemnly and authoritatively taught by the Council of Trent and affirmed by later popes and the Second Vatican Council. He says that Amoris Laetitia should be interpreted and implemented in light of the doctrine of marital indissolubility: implementations that undermine this doctrine should be avoided. Levering says that numerous contemporary Catholic theologians and biblical scholars are mistakenly turning the indissolubility of marriage into contingent dissolubility based upon whether the spouses continue to act in loving ways toward each other. The sacrament's gift of objective indissolubility is thereby undermined. Fortunately, the main interpreters of Amoris Laetitia, whose views have been approved by Pope Francis, insist that the Apostolic Exhortation does not change the doctrine of marital indissolubility in any way.

Book The Dynamics of Political Discourse

Download or read book The Dynamics of Political Discourse written by Anita Fetzer and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-08-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking Sinclair and Coulthard’s sequentiality-based notion of the follow-up, this volume explores its forms and communicative functions in traditional and contemporary modes of communication (parliamentary sessions, interviews, debates, speeches, op-eds, discussion forums and Twitter) wherein political actors address challenges to their political agenda and to their political face. In so doing, the volume achieves two major advances. First, its contributions expand the understanding of follow-ups beyond the traditional focus on structural sequentiality, considering communicative function as a defining feature of a follow-up. Second, it broadens the understanding of what constitutes political discourse, as not being limited to a single discourse, but also being able to span multiple discourses of different forms and speech events over time.
